The CD stereo soundtrack is much better! I have the original version of the game installed on my Windows 10 and it only plays MIDIs. I wished I knew how to make it play the regular tracks on newer computers as they're the ones I grew up with.

I believe the GOG version (www.gog.com) of HOMM2 is the easiest way to experience the CD-audio (converted to OGG files) on a modern computer. For the Windows version of HOMM2 and stuck with MIDI, then some Windows software synthesizer such as the Roland Sound Canvas VA could help.
Such a shame the way they did music in this game. If you play MT32 midi you can't have the digitised sounds, which are great! So it is always better to go with Sound Blaster or Adlib which is the same. Cheers for the video!
Thanks for the lovely soundtrack! I want to record several soundtracks from this golden era, but can't seem to recreate an authentic sound when playing the midifiles outside the game, for instance using Dosmidi. Have tried several random instrument banks, but can never recreate the exact sound. Did you somehow rip the instrument bank for thís soundtrack? If so, how?

These are recorded by just running the game. Most likely this game uses some sort of custom file format (*.ETD files w/ bank and music data) so running them with some external OLP player maybe difficult. Don't have that much experience in ripping OLP music data, need to do some research some time on that.
I haven't played this game but I find the music very good. Sadly, for example in the second part of the track listing, there are some separate songs that fade out in the middle. Is this how they play in-game or is it because of the way of recording? Perhaps they loop in-game and we hear the entire loop here?

All intro music just plays as long as the animations run. I was unable to render the OPL music without the animations. I did run the game with internal cache disabled and turbo disengaged to make the animations run slow.

Again, great music here by Matt Furniss. Also nice exclusive songs and song parts here and also in the Roland one.
Hello! I'm running a PCem emulator with munt as the MT32 emulator. The game doesn't really like any of the addresses I give it to find the midi. Are there any particular parameters you run with this? Thank you!
7 дней назад
Do the game files work OK in DOSBox+Munt? Type LASER /? for Command Line switches. Sorry, don't have any experience with PCem but on real hardware have found (with most games) need to disable internal cache and dis-engage the turbo button not to flood the MPU-IPC and MT-32 with SysEx messages on my 486DX2.
Hey! Thanks for the reply. Yeah it works on dosbox, although it doesn't quite sound like yours. However I'm more interested in getting it up and running on the DOS machine with PCem. So I was just wondering what your parameters were when you run the game, like the IRQ address etc... Cheers!

@@SxGaming3390 "laser /RB330 /RI2" should be the same as not giving any params, how I have started the game. Munt should have any of the MT-32 configured (CM-32L should sound the same).
32:16 Been trying to find a version of the end credits in true MT-32 that didn't cut out before it looped around again. Even the official CD OST cuts it prematurely! This is my favorite track in the whole game. I remember finishing this game back in 1993 and sitting back and listening to this song on my MT-32 back then and was like "wow..." and let it loop over and over. To this day, nostalgia still let's me enjoy it to the full. Thanks for posting this complete and unadulterated MT-32 version.
What a great soundtrack. I never knew there was a 'modern' (1992 lol) version of Laser Squad. First track is a banger. Love the over the top 80s action film montage energy! I was aware of Laser Squad but never played it... Played Lords of Chaos on C64 and then UFO/Xcom of course :) Thanks for this video, made my morning 🔫 🧑🚀🧑🚀🧑🚀🧑🚀🎶

Great music here by Matt Furniss! Nice to get some console/C64 style vibes on the PC. PS. The note cutoffs in some songs are most likely due to difference in MT-32 and CM-32L/LAPC-I polyphony capabilities.
I had a Roland Mt32 and Soundblaster Pro when this game was released. I had stayed home from school the day of delevery. I had played many a games, but none of them, ever touched the power of these two awesome sound systems. When UPS came, I quickly opened the box from EA, put the CD in, and ran the game. The boot and Intro was so beautifully done, it wasnt till the avatar entered the moongate, that I realized I had tears running down my cheek. Only game that ever did the same was Ori and the Blind Forest. Ultima IX ascension totaly destroyed the series for me. If I was ever given the chance, id write a Ultima X the way it should be, call it Ultima Twin Delema, and have it undo the damage IX had caused.
I been playing the Ultima series since the mid 80s, and Ultima music has never in my opinion ever had anyone who could come close in instrumental music, till I saw Ori and the Blind forest. Most likely the only title I ever played that's music and storyline digs deep into one's soul.
Any time I play this game I have Okinawa flashbacks. I was at MCAS Futenma when it came out. Didn't know anything about Wing Commander until this. Then Privateer.

Already sold this one. Stay tuned for www.youtube.com/@TheOldskoolPC 's content regarding this card.
Such an interesting Card!! Could you provide a little more content? Showing how the card is set up? Is there any configuration needed? Could you show us the backside of the card? :)

Regarding setup. Nothing was required on my 5170 (CGA+Serial/Parallel card, 128/ 640 memory expansion, floppy/HDD card). Just insert the card, install the software and start using the software.
This music is so good i am forced to come back to this amazing soundtrack every once in a while. It's unfortunate that people do not appreciate the older MIDI sound card music of that era. It can be seen in playlists and videos related being almost non-existent on RU-vid. For anyone interested in similar music, i recommend Dungeon Synth.
That awesome Dream of Lady Nan track baked my noodle just now - "huh?? Where is that one used? Is it the gargoyle land music and my brain has temporarily left the building? ...oh"
First track reminds me warcraft orcs theme. Maybe they happen to use the same preset.

In an alternate universe with unlimited time and skills it would be nice to do some reverse-engineering on U6's *.DRV and *.M files to produce a custom driver for this card. Some early 90s MicroProse titles also supported an option for a custom driver?
Nice composition! Do you have your .BSM files available anywhere for download? When I make my BSMW card video later this year, I'll be releasing all of the songs I wrote on it as well, and would be happy to promote yours as well. Drop me an email if you can.
Beautiful. I would so love to tinker with some original hardware from that time. I wonder how many of my first PC are still alive in the wild. The PC1640 wasn't exactly built to last :)

If they haven't reached recycling, maybe they are alive somewhere...PS. Had some Amstrad PC model as my BBS machine for a short while back then.
I asked my dad what had happened to it a few years after the HDD failed - he had given it to his colleague to try and repair. Colleague said: "It's probably rusting in landfill somewhere." Not everyone gets sentimental about hardware I guess!

Just realized that for some reason the key is different than it should be although the music key sounds correct.

That's ok, I know who the buyer is :-) There are four of these known in the world. I'm making a video on the card to be published on @theoldskoolpc before the end of the year.

@@JimLeonard OK. That's great to hear! I can share photos, scans and videos for you to evaluate if useful in making/preparing your video. Just let me know.
I'm interested in having the time shower midi, is it possible you can have it available for download? I'm the same person who asked for it years ago in this same comment section, but the site no longer works...

Try search term "universal smf midi floppy disk pack" at archive dot org.
You can find this soundtrack uploaded here by various channels and it seems it always sounds different. I'm glad we have your upload now as well, which is a quality one! The 'Energy Systems' track starts from the middle though? Thanks for the upload in any case.

Due to the way how a "song" is compiled from separate loops and here I am just rendering them in order (from 0 to 7) may cause some difference how the songs are actually heard in game. This game should require another performance type video recorded from gameplay.

Inspired by Finntrovert's review of this game ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GLd8kM5PLK4.htmlsi=bYFonV-6nXSfx1YI, I took a look at the floppy release game assets and found another John Miles AIL / XMI-based game from ORIGIN Systems, Inc. This time the music comprises of playing sequences within a single XMI file in sequence (as oppose to one sequence per XMI file as in ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1Rn_uXZdNOA.html. Hopefully the music is presented properly here despite this fact.
