Betcha when people saw the title they thought it was a John Ford film about the Irish starring Maureen O'Hara. (Or the actress from the film adaptation of Angela's Ashes whose name slips my mind.)
Great movie. Baldwin in HILARIOUS SNL sketch, he is the same character as I. Play - “winters breath” sent from Kris Kringle ( Murray) to talk to the elves (salesmen) about their disastrous performance. You must see this, showcases what an amazing actor Baldwin is - plays tragedy and comedy in the same exact performance . He is unjustly accused in Rust case.
It was a flop for several reasons, but the key reason why is this was no longer a relvant entity for modern day audiences. I remember walking past a department store every day that was full of Dick Tracy T-shirts in the summer of 1990. No one wanted them. Most people under the age of 40 probably never followed Dick Tracy. His glory days were long past him, even though the strip was still published. It would be like making a big budget Dondi movie. Dondi was in everyone's Sunday paper, but who the hell read it? And if the kids did read Dick Tracy in their newspaper, then they knew Tess and Dick were married, that there was a Junior, and so on. It was a dumb idea for 1990. And the songs were not 1990 songs either. The only hit out of the project, and it's a stretch to tie it in, was Madonna's "Vogue" single. But if people who are Dick Tracy or detective film fans want to watch it, then that's fine. But this movie was supposed to be the blockbuster hit of 1990 and I'm just explaining my take on why it wasn't.
Loved all these characters. Hated to see them killed but I guess there wouldn’t be a movie. Even the ferro I think (the pilot) loved apone for being the sarg
I always thought he was alive, but when the ghosts asked him to join them, it was basically a nice way to say it’s his time to die and pass into the afterlife, but when Roy wants to go, they tell him he’s not invited because Ray is still young and it’s not his time.
Sometimes there's a tendency to over use the 'Jesus/Saviour' trope, like Klaatu in 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' or Gandalf the White in 'The Lord of the Rings'. Or E.T. come to think of it...
Baldwin is great in this Film because he's Playing Himself. A Douche Bag New Yorker. I'm from NYC and I know those people very well. Welsh actor Jonathan Pryce does a Great New York accent and is a Fantatstic "Schlub".
As a straight commission insurance salesman for over 30 years, I can feel exactly what they’re feeling. Many a night I was in my office crying because I didn’t have the rent due the next day.
Terence Mann is not dead till he goes in the Corn but he knows before hand probably right when Ray comes over to his apartment. He hears a voice calling him to go with Ray so he can enter death at the Corn.
I wondered about it years ago but then the hot dog and brother-in-law... then again, if recently deceased he may simply have been more presently manifested... dunno. (don't actually believe in ghosts but story-telling has it's own rules, and Mann being a ghost doesn't break the rules... neither does a live man going to baseball heaven... magic surrealism. Ray going and coming back- that would have broken the rules...) Doc stepping off the field was the best moment for me... stepping off with no regrets... his own heaven was his wife...
If he was dead, then he didn’t become a ghost until he gets dropped off by Ray. After that scene he only interacts with really old people, and the one older lady even commented to him when he compliments her on her writings, she says he was as well in past tense. He also interacts with Ray’s family and brother in law but the brother in law doesn’t believe this is him. The writing in this movie was great in order for a theory like this to be a true possibility. Their is enough room in the story for this to be true and him to be alive the whole time to also be true.
Im sorry, fanboys but both versions of Alien 3 are a complete and utter dogs**t. They destroy all three main characters in Aliens. They replace Newt and Hicks with the most unlikable characters imaginable. Heck, some of them even try to assault Ripley. And we're supposed to care if these prisoners live or die? No f**king way. In the same movie, Ripley spreads eagle for the first ex-con she sees. WTF? They showed absolutely no originality by making an Alien born from an ox. Imagine if the xenomorph was running around stabbing its victims with its horns, before eating them. No matter what, the idea that they had one or two alien facehuggers on board the Solaco is RIDICULOUS
It's certainly possible. Back then rape was punished by execution...particularly when it was a black rapist and a white woman. Given that undeniable, and universally known, fact it would have been understandable if he figured "I'd rather be shot in the back than be hanged in front of hundreds of ignorant white folks". Sheriff Tate was a basically decent guy. He would never have approved of any of his deputies murdering Tom Robinson...or anyone else. But it's certainly possible that one, or more, of his deputies harbored attitudes that he disapproved of.
There is also the scenes where Ray is asking where Terrence lives and everyone is giving him directions. One is a young gas attendant. Though a good theory I don't think it works. Now it could be at the end he dies but he was alive the whole time or you have too many holes.
DO & DIE DON’T QUESTION WHY Luke 17:10 Joel Osteen’s anecdotal story supporting questioning and filtering what you let into your subconscious is about him watching a war movie and having nightmares in the night. It brought me back to the subject of war. As Commander in Chief Presidents have to direct men and women willing to put their lives on the line for their country/men in battle. This service is done in faith and gladly because they feel moved and compelled do it. We are Christian soldiers going on to war. We are ridiculed for blind faith but our faith is as such too, where we know our Master loves us and our cause is right. So ours is to ‘do and die and not to question why’ also, but our rewards are sure and our KING reigns for sure! You can’t go wrong and you can’t lose!
You are overthinking it. He was alive; specifically for the two reasons you stated. Specifically, the Fenway concession scene. Mann tells Ray he wants a beer and a dog. Ray tells the 3 concession workers “two”. And the concession workers fill the order. How could they fill the order without hearing a beer or dog. When Mark, who did not believe/could not see the players at the time was introduced to Mann says “I’m the Easter Bunny”. If could not see the players (ghosts) how could he see Mann if he were dead already? . Plus, his redemption in the movie was to write again, which he promises Ray he will do again right before he goes into the corn. Why would he promise to do something a ghost can not do? <Insert “ghostwriter joke here> Overthinking can ruin something easily.
I think two things killed the movie. One, if they were asleep in their what activated the egg that a host was nearby. If the queen laid an egg it should have been in the landing gear of the drop ship which would have been nowhere near the sleeping pods. If the egg was in the landing bay with the ship, Ripley would have saw it and destroyed it before going to sleep. The second problem was killing Hicks and Newt before the movie started. Fans got invested in those characters and want to know their next chapter. I think that was the main problem with Covenant. We wanted know Elizabeth Shaw’s story meeting the engineers and David kills her off? And in the first movie David betrays her and she fixes him off camera only to get killed off camera. For me that killed movie.
