An absolutely immense engine! Didnt do it any harm as the bigger and simpler an enigne is, the more "omnidirectional" it becomes. The Oil pump I imagine would be drawing air from the top end, but we were running her up with a dry sump anyway... (it had been underwater for a time!) The short running times were not enough to generate massive friction heat.
@burghill1979 Not really its quite common for you to stop a gardner with the stop and let of the rack a bit to hasty and they just bounce back off compression and keep going backwards! my lister diesel does the same
not really... such simple physics.. just not fully compressing a cylinder of fuel, blowing said fuel out if intakes and sucking in air from exhaust... we now have it running "forwards" and it still works ;)
A little tip for you boys, are you pushing the "cold start" button in on the fuel pump ? its on the front of the pump (opposite end from where you mate on the throttle is) under a little aluminium housing,I rebuilt one of these engines last year and they are wonderfull, check out my video on here "how not to start a hudswell clarke shunter"
We think this was a chinese lantern... saw one of a similar shape drifting low in the sky last week.. weird cuboid shape... The Southern daily echo had numerous comments re the UFO and seems pretty conclusive it was a lantern... Ultra cool shape and size tho, and the height of this one was phenominal!!!
