An educator by day and a passionate EV enthusiast by any other time. My hope is to explore the Wild West mountain and desert towns that are not necessarily on the supercharging network.

I didn’t know this at the time, but Ford has to OTA update the lighting in order for the truck to work at a Tesla charging with an adapter. I purchased a lectron adapter and it would not work and I was not happy…until I received an update saying that the Tesla chargers are available to use. After the update, I can charge at designated Tesla stations

These things have 8 year battery warranties, plus you can easily get one of these for less than a similarly equipped ICE version before the tax credit. Throw in the tax credit and its easily 10k less.

As a fellow Colorado guy, it's nice to hear about your trip experience. I watched your video on OoS and just stumbled on this one. I'm looking at an XLT and Pro equipped with almost identical packages and it sure is nice to see a current video rather than scan through year old material. As convenient as an ER might be for long trips, it's hard for me to justify the extra $7k when most of my driving is local or the occasional trip to Gunnison or Steamboat.

That cooler you had in your bed as you made lunch. Did you store that in the front trunk? If yes, how did you like the access being as open and low as Ford has it designed. This is something others trucks did not have, specifically such a low entrance access point. A really nice feature. Rivian for example, you have to lift it up and over to get something inside.
@benjaminwestby5836
@benjaminwestby5836 4 месяца назад
We stored the cooler in the Frunk during our day trips out and about in San Diego so that it wouldn’t take up cab space while not worrying about it getting snagged from the bed. We use the frunk nearly every day because of how convenient and well designed it is. During our long distance trip we kept it in the bed but had a ton of other things in the frunk that we wouldn’t need to go in and out of frequently.

You are not a “guest” compared to other Tesla owners, you are a paying customer. For Tesla to receive Federal funding the Supercharger network it had to open up - it is branded Tesla but that is branding only. Based on the agreement between Ford and Tesla you have every right to charge. Tesla has even posted tips for other drivers to maximize charger utility given the different charge port locations. Until V4 conversions there will have to be some courtesy of course, but as a Ford driver those chargers - under contract - are as much as yours as they are for Tesla owners.
@benjaminwestby5836
@benjaminwestby5836 4 месяца назад
I do get that concept, and agree on the whole. That being said, as an early adopter from years ago, I do understand the frustration of a bad charging experience. It’s my hope to remain considerate, even within the rights I have in access.
@sedawk
@sedawk 4 месяца назад
@@benjaminwestby5836 Absolutely courtesy is required - especially at the busy chargers. Tesla removing the bollards from most of the chargers was amazing - just to help us fit. All I'm saying is we are not "guests" of the Tesla drivers at these stations as you stated in the video (which, BTW, was great).

So in essence, you had a 4.5kWh (50% of 9kWh) battery system. So you have just increased your battery storage by 98kWh. That's more than 21 times more. Now all you need to do is increase that solar array so even in winter when all you get is about 10% of the max to provide you just the few kilowatts for your family of 4, and in the summer when it's over producing, you now have the size of storage to collect all the excess.
@benjaminwestby5836
@benjaminwestby5836 4 месяца назад
Before we bought the truck, we upgraded our lead acid batteries to a 15kwh lithium pack. At some point we may extend our solar array but for now we have other high priority projects with our home budget. But yes, it’s pretty cool to see expanding power options!

@Paul-cj1wb

With the $12.99 plan per month plan, you get the same price as Tesla drivers. So roughly 30% cheaper. Only fair since by buying Teslas they helped pay for network. You can choose to only pay for that month that you're going on a long road trip. Or you can pay a one time payment of $99 for a whole year. That's basically the cost of one fill-up on an ICE F-150. So either one is totally worth it. And Ford needs to get their act together and give customers the kWh speed they're charging at on their EV's screens. Everyone else is able to, why can't Ford.

Just to let you know, if all non-Teslas park next to each other and take the stall to their left; while Teslas do the opposite from the other side of the site, only 1 (or 2 at the very most) stall will be lost in all, even if the rest are all completely full. It's not a big deal. It just takes a little coordination and learning curve. And please note that most Tesla stations have 12 to 16 or more stalls. This is not EA or EVgo with only 1 to 4 stalls. And they have a 99.96% reliability rate. They just work. All the time. Not half the time. No more charger anxiety for you.
@chriswestenskow5202
@chriswestenskow5202 5 месяцев назад
Good discussion, but how often are more than 50% of the stalls at this location in use? If what you are seeing in this video is typical, then the whole thing is being blown out of proportion. There are a few thousand dispensers that are heavily utilized and will need longer cables ASAP, but for many sites, the utilization is low enough that losing access to a stall for 20-30 minutes will not have an impact on anyone
@benjaminwestby5836

To this I completely agree; my experience is nearly entirely rural and I think a non-issue for my region. I can imagine holidays and weekends in Vegas it's a different story.
@Paul-cj1wb
@Paul-cj1wb 5 месяцев назад
Tesla is Tesla for a reason. They are NOT opening any of those sites that are normally full or very busy. Those are not truly needed by non-Teslas as there are more CCS options in those high EV adoption areas. The ones needed the most are on those areas were CCS are none existent, and if a small few exist, half are usually broken. Superchargers have a 99.96% reliability rate. They just work. All the time. Not half the time.

My solar panels are on the ground and so it's easier to clean them off. My issue is that I'm in a deep canyon and so I get sun late in the morning and lose it early in the afternoon. I also heat my water with a solar collector and surprisingly that worked about 350 out of 365 days without issue. No gas into the house and so all heating is done with wood stoves (two of them). I've split more wood in the last few years than ever before in my life!

I've had a number of issues since moving to a completely off-grid residence in the mountains. It's kind of a pain in the neck sometimes and it gets expensive, but it's nice to have a half mile buffer between myself and my nearest part-time neighbor and a full mile between myself and my nearest full-time neighbor!

You have to check all bolt connections to the batteries monthly. the power going through them causes them to loosen up on there own. That will cause inverters to short off.

Seeing the Cybertruck is out now, you might have made the best choice. I was surprised it had less range (and battery capacity) than the Lightning. I thought being two years later it would be way ahead of the other trucks, but only had has 10% more towing capacity and better 0-60 (not something most truck buyers are looking for). Does look like it's from 2040 after the nuclear war though...

The crazy thing about the home backup is for the extended range it has a 131kwh usable battery. From tesla a powerwall is 13.5kwh for $8,400... that means the F150 is essentially an $80,000 powerwall, and you can also drive it.
