Fun video 👍 But it feels like the swordsmen are just not attacking. They're barely keeping track of the spearman, and always stay at range from spear without closing the distance for a sword. And they never ever attacked simultaneously. Barely attack a few times really. It usually take one good parade and two kick steps forward to beat a swordman.
Fatigue would be the biggest factor in real battle in such times... history records, most (almost all) battles ended when one side routed. Be that morale break due to odds, loss of cohesion or discipline, or fatigue. Late medieval knights were almost impenetrable and blunt weapons got to be used more, until gunpowder came along. Cutting through most kinds of armour (even leather+gambeson) would be incredibly hard. But most people could not afford full armour... daggers would be used to finish a downed opponent with surgical strikes once disabled. Armpits, visors...
The sabre is a sword meant for stabbing and swift motions. A katana is a weapon meant for slicing and heavy swings. Both weapons have a very opposing style, but can fare very equally in most situations and scenarios.
She was aggressive and the man is just passively defending himself not trying to attack, if he seriously wants to attack that will be a different story
so this isnt exactly niten ichi-ryu is what im understanding? it sounds like he derived his own style based off of musashi's niten ichi-ryu. you can even see the grip on the katana is different than traditional niten ichi-ryu. in this style theyre holding the katana at the position of the outer hand (the butt-end), while in traditional niten ichi-ryu you can see they hold the katana at the inner grip. still super cool style tho!
no sense for me, most fending attacks in reality couldn't harm seriously anyone, not enough strenght and too soft weapon, if it was a normal sword also positions would change because body would be closer to sword in order to attack and let sword hit the enemy flesh and hurt
You're wrong on 3 points. The first is that they would be harmless. When one of them gets hit, a buzzer goes off. Epee (the form of fencing used here) only sets the buzzer off when it's tip is pressed down a certain amount, and that amount has been calculated by how much force it would take to significantly puncture, so if fencers were using real rapiers, they would be drawing a lot of blood. Second is the strength of the weapon, the sabre and rapier were real weapons that were used in combat. Their effectiveness is battle-tested. They're flexible so that they don't break, but they aren't soft. If you ever hold a real longsword, you'd likely be surprised to find that they are also rather flexible (even if not as flexible as an epee). Third, the fencer's style actually wouldn't change much in real combat (they might change tactics and be more cautious, but they'd target the same areas). The fencing stance and sword position are extremely practical with them standing sideways to increase their reach while reducing their openings, and the sword being slightly up to maximize the protection of the bell guard. Fencing the same way they normally do, but with a real weapon, would leave the opponent's hands a bloody mess completely unable to hold their weapon.
Why the hell can’t this Korean duo put a link to the katana smith????!!! If I were the smith I’d be pissed. All they do is shill their heme katana which I’ve considered buying but I don’t like how they do not respect their guests other business potential.

Is there anyway a jacket can be made that look similar to the armor pieces of a Samurai? I really wish Kendo armor worked in HEMA. At least it looks much cooler than a hema jacket… :/. It reminds me of my motorcycle jacket. No thanks…
