Ya know, everyone yammers on and on about Kurt Cobain....but I gotta tell ya, Nirvana did NOT age well. All they ever put out were ear-worms. That's it. Kurt couldn't write this. Nor could he play like this. I'm not supposed to put another band down to bolster another, but I can't help it in this case. Sonic Youth had SO MUCH MORE to offer than Nirvana and yet they are marginalized by the lowest common denominator. Also, they are one of the very few non-UK acts that helped develop the shoegaze sound....the beautiful noise. And listening to Youth's lyrics is like enjoying beatnik punk poetry while listening to Cobain whine about everything is like listening to 16 year old kid threatening suicide because dad wouldn't let him take the car out this weekend. Whatever. Hate me for this. Everyone does. I'll shut up when Youth are in the HOF where they belong. Along with Jesus Lizard, too. FIN.
They're just different approaches. Nirvana are powerful and raw and Sonic Youth are more calculated and diverse. I don''t hate you for this post but it does make you sound quite young. Nothing wring with that, but I expect you'll probably grow out of this kind of perspective. Sonic Youth admired Nirvana, Thurston Moore has repeatedly talked about their profound significance within the subculture. You don't have to love them but they're definitely worthy of respect. Personally I think In Utero is outstanding.
Very unfair comparison. Kurt was 27 when he died, Thurston was 48 when this came out and the rest of the band were of a similar age. Daydream Nation is a lot more raw than this album and we have no idea what direction Nirvana may have taken as they progressed and matured. We don't have that 20 years of comparable history to stand one band against another so lets just leave both legacies as they are.
After the rain And after the rain the temperature dropped And covered in ice was my window top I say goodbye, I wave my hand As a thousand doves fly Across the blackened night After the rain we forget We make sure we gain, then we leave it 'Cause we're a nation of forgetters Oh, after the rain we pretend It's easier to begin without looking back 'Cause all at once air so thin And there's nothing left to breathe in After the rain we forget After the rain we forget Behind the dream so rosy and red A pile of things to forget A voice of the past tiptoes in A cracking, a ghost whispering After the rain we forget We make sure we gain, then we leave it 'Cause were a nation of forgetters After the rain we forget After the rain we forget People, where have you been? Have you been hiding in your big houses? And people, after the rain, will your life Will it ever be the same? Oh, people, what will you do When your luck, when it turns on you? People, after the rain, will your life Will it ever be the same? After the rain we forget
i used to play shin megami tensai online with the album playing in the back, the nostalgic feelings sets in back when the world made sense, and there was future

The precision in percussion, the tonal shifts and the bright lifts of accents in guitar and voccalization of "make believe" sets my creative bone into quiver.
