Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: Before opportunity crowns you with great success, it usually tests your mettle through adversity. Adversity provides the resistance necessary to develop the strength to overcome great obstacles. This strength consists of self-confidence, perseverance, and, very importantly, self-knowledge. If you encounter a setback, it is a clue to a personal weakness. You may have needed to be more cautious in judging a competitor or required to be bold in your vision of what needed to be done. Let adversity be your guide to understanding where you misstepped and which qualities you need to cultivate where you misstepped and which qualities you need to cultivate. No one rejoices in disappointment, but if you are success-conscious, you can turn the situation into a chance to improve your character, an opportunity you otherwise would have missed.

Quote from New Life newsletter: Opportunity to Improve And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:52 There is much value in the way you’ve always done things. Consider improving on that value. Often a difficult and critical challenge will come along to force you out of your established routine. Take the opportunity to rise to that challenge. Certainly there are benefits to the way you’ve always done things. And just as certainly there are ways to improve. Take a look at the things that frustrate you, at the things you struggle with, at the things you resent and regret, and be thankful for them. Then find a way to sincerely justify that gratitude. The most difficult problems point the way to the most significant improvements. Imagine how your effectiveness would skyrocket if the biggest obstacle that holds you back were suddenly no longer there. Have the courage to move beyond what is comfortable, knowing that whatever your level of achievement is, you can always improve. Father in heaven, help us today to see clearly areas in which we can improve. We don’t want to do things the same way just cause that’s how we have always done them. We don’t want to live with the same frustrations and little problems that could be taken care of with some slight tweaking. Show us where we can make a small change today that will improve what we do for the days to come. In Jesus name, AMEN! In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back.

Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: If you don’t know why you failed, you are no wiser than when you began. There’s an adage that those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. So it is with our failures. Unless we learn from our mistakes, we will likely repeat them until we learn from such experiences and correct our course-or give up and accept temporary defeat as permanent failure. Every setback you encounter contains valuable information that will eventually lead you to success if you study it carefully. Without adversity, you would never develop wisdom; without knowledge, success would be short-lived. When you make a mistake, say, “That’s good! I’ve gotten that out of the way. I will never do that again.” You will undoubtedly make other mistakes, but they won’t bother you as much when you treat them as learning experiences.

Quote from New Life newsletter: Making a Difference I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit, for [otherwise] apart from Me [that is, cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing. John 15:5 When things around you seem too noisy, hectic and out of control, be extra calm, peaceful and patient. If the people in your life seem too greedy and selfish, that’s the time to be extra loving, giving and sincerely compassionate. When the world seems a bit too confused and aimless, be extra focused and purposeful. If you don’t like what you see, you have the opportunity to change it by changing the way you are. Choose to be the difference that makes a real difference, and your efforts will bear abundant fruit. When things around you seem to be at their worst, that’s when you can accomplish the most by being your best. That’s when you can truly make a valuable, much-needed positive difference. When trouble and confusion surround you, see the situation as the opportunity that it is. Father in heaven, we are humbled and grateful that we get to make a difference in other people’s lives. We ask that You would help us to make the most of every interaction and opportunity You give us. We know we can’t do it without Your help, so we ask for eyes to see where we can make a difference, the courage to make a difference and for much fruit to grow out of it. In Jesus name, AMEN! Act as if what you do makes a difference because it does.

Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: Your failure may prove to be an asset, provided you know why you failed. There are a few occasions during our brief time on earth when most of us experience great flashes of insight and extraordinary moments of truth that forever change our lives. Most of those experiences result from spectacular failures, not from outstanding successes. We learn the most lasting lessons from the failures that so chagrined and dismayed us. When you are the unwilling recipient of a significant moment in truth, extract the valuable lessons and then put the entire episode behind you. Learn from your failures, forget about them, and move on to better things.

Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: Failure seems to be nature’s plan for preparing us for great responsibilities. If everything we attempted in life were achieved with a minimum of effort and came out exactly as planned, how little we would learn-and how boring life would be! And how arrogant we would become if we succeeded at everything we attempted. Failure allows us to develop the essential quality of humility. It is not easy-when you are the person experiencing failure-to accept it philosophically, serenely, knowing that this is one of life’s great learning experiences. But it is. Nature’s ways are not always easily understood, but they are repetitive and predictable. You can be sure that when you feel you are being most unfairly tested, you are being prepared for outstanding achievement.

Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: Failure is a blessing when it pushes us out of a cushioned seat of self-satisfaction and forces us to do something useful. Suppose you carefully study your life and those of achievers you admire. It is an absolute certainty you will discover that your most significant opportunities often occur during adversity. Only when faced with the possibility of failure are we willing to deal with radical change and take the risks that lead to great success. When you experience temporary failure and know it is temporary, you can capitalize on the opportunities adversity always brings.

Quote from New Life newsletter: Here & Now Just as each one of you has received a special gift [a spiritual talent, an ability graciously given by God], employ it in serving one another as [is appropriate for] good stewards of God’s multi-faceted grace [faithfully using the diverse, varied gifts and abilities granted to Christians by God’s unmerited favor]. 1 Peter 4:10 When you feel the need to complain about the way things are, remember this. There’s something you could be doing right now to improve the situation. Before you spend a lot of effort looking for someone to blame, look for ways to move things forward. Consider what you can now do to make a positive contribution. There’s little to be gained by pointing out what is wrong unless you find a way to begin making it right. Instead of dwelling on the problems, focus on the opportunities they present. Experience how much more satisfying it is to put your energy into moving forward rather than looking backward. Even when the situation is not at all your fault, the most effective option is to take responsibility. What’s happened has happened, and no amount of finger pointing can change that. Quickly direct your attention to the many positive and valuable things you can do now. Instead of being grumpy, be grateful for the opportunities that are now available. Choose to take positive action, and there’s no limit to the real progress you can make. Father in heaven, forgive us for the times we give into the temptation to blame and complain, rather than doing something to help. We don’t want to be gossipers or complainers. Help us to see the problems we face, as opportunities to help out. Grant us wisdom to know how to better a situation, rather than point a finger. In Jesus name, AMEN! Helping one person might not change the whole world, but it could change the world for one person.

Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: A wise man watches his faults more closely than his virtues; fools reverse the order. We all have within us the potential for greatness or failure. Both possibilities are an innate part of our character. Whether we reach for the stars or plunge into despair depends more on managing our positive and negative potential. It is doubtful that, if left unchecked, your virtues will rage out of control. Unfortunately, the reverse is not true about your faults. Left unattended, faults have a way of multiplying until they eventually choke out your good qualities. The surest way to control your faults is to attack them the moment they appear.

Quote from New Life newsletter: Surrounded by Influence Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals. 1 Corinthians 15:33 The things that surround you can exert a powerful influence on you. And you can use that influence to your advantage. Surround yourself with positive influences. Let them serve as subtle and constant reminders to be your very best. Arrange your physical environment so that it encourages and promotes focus and creativity. Choose to spend your time surrounded by things that lift you up. Get yourself around people who will reinforce the values and goals you consider to be most meaningful. Spend time with people who challenge you to be your best. Seek out situations that enable you to connect with and fulfill your most deeply held purposes. Learn which surroundings inspire you most, and find a way to spend time in them. Though it is certainly possible to flourish in spite of your surroundings, life proceeds much more smoothly when your environment exerts a positive influence. Father in heaven, we ask for Your help to surround ourselves with the right things this week. We want influences that will help us, not lead us astray. Help us to be careful where we go, who we allow to speak into our lives and what we watch. Help us to choose well what and who influences us. In Jesus name, AMEN! Tell me who you hang out with, and I’ll tell you who you are.

Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: Self-pity is an opiate. The most insidious problem with drugs is that the human body develops a tolerance for them and requires more extensive doses to achieve the same effect. The same is valid with self-pity. The more you indulge in it, the more you will need. Soon, self-pity will become a habit so debilitating that you will rob yourself of all your potential. Happily, there is a cure. If you truly analyze the situation, most often, you will find the problems that have driven you to pity yourself are primarily of your creation. It follows that the best person to remedy the problem is the person who created it: you.

Quote from New Life newsletter: Sunshine & Rain Always giving thanks to God the Father for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:20 Some days there is brilliant sunshine. Other days there is gentle rain. Each day has its own special treasure to give. Each day brings a new, fresh opportunity for living. Some days will bring unpleasant news, and other days will bring joyous celebrations. Every day, in its own way, adds to the overall richness of life. Take what this day brings and challenge yourself to see and to live its special value. For no matter what kind of day this one may be, the value is most certainly there. A sturdy and resilient life is built by making the most of each and every day. There’s something in each one of them that will surely make you stronger, wiser and more fully alive. Learn to treasure each day no matter the weather. Father in heaven, thank You for this reminder to be grateful for the sunshine and the rain. Thank You for this new day and all its opportunities and obstacles. No matter what “weather” we are facing today help us to see Your hand in and through all of it. Thank You that though the weather and our circumstances may change You never do! In Jesus name, AMEN!

Napoleon Hill's Thought for the Day: Remember that the faults of humankind are pretty evenly distributed among all of us Why can we easily overlook the faults we are quick to spot in others? Being objective when criticizing our friends, family members, and business associates is easy. Still, being honest about our shortcomings is far more complex. Only when we recognize that we are all human, with the same faults and failings, do we begin to develop that incredible quality of tolerance that enables us to accept others as they are and ask nothing in return. Replacing fault-finding with “good-finding” is never easy. But when you become one who always compliments instead of criticizes, you become the kind of friend we would all like to have.

Quote from New Life newsletter: How Blessed You Are Blessed [with spiritual security] is the man who believes and trusts in and relies on the Lord and whose hope and confident expectation is the Lord. Jeremiah 17:7 What if your dreams have already come true and you don’t even know it because you’re so busy chasing what the world says you must have? What if the things you thought you needed in order to be happy, you do not really need at all? All around you are opportunities for joy. Are you too busy to see them? Are you so consumed with striving for success that you’re unable to appreciate the massive abundance that is already yours? Have you placed so many conditions on happiness that you don’t ever have time to actually experience it? Take a slow, sweet, deep breath and remember how very blessed you are. Allow life’s real and ever-present beauty to touch you and to remind you of who you truly are. Stop obsessing so much on keeping score and getting ahead. Focus instead on creating real and lasting value from each moment you are given. There is so very much that you can do. Count your many blessings, and as you do they will grow more profound. Father in heaven, what a great reminder today to slow down and count the many blessings You have given us. We don’t want to just keep up with the preverbal “Joneses” chasing after meaningless things that will never satisfy. Help us to learn to be content in You and the blessings You have richly given us. In Jesus name, AMEN! Stop focusing on how stressed you are and remember how blessed you are.
