Mod your MINI! I post videos mostly about repairing MINI Coopers and other cars, and driving fast at the track. Have fun fixing your car! The tools cost less than the labor charge and you have the tool for the next job! My specialty is "mechanics-eye-view" videos - you see what I see as I do automotive work.

If you do close the hatch/boot, you can always open it by lifting the back seats. You will see a steel cable with a ring on it. That is the manual release to open the back hatch/boot.
Salut à tous. Merci pour ton travail de partage. Du coup, je viens de le faire. 🥲. Je suis amateur . Je fais ça dans les cailloux . Mais j' ai pas mal d outils. Résultat ? C'est un boulot de titan, il m'a fallu presque 4 jours. 😮 Faut être très motivé . Mais ça été enrichissant 😂
Highly recommend smearing petroleum jelly on the o rings as another commenter said, helped a bunch, everything went together smooth. I even put some on the bottom of the retaining ring, as mine was rusted. I put a little on the inside holes of the filter, too. Also, used the screwdriver trick to wedge the basket for reassembly. Great vid, didn't take too long as I already had my back seats out to replace the rear 6x9 speakers.
This video is a LIFE SAVER! I’m self taught , starting my mechanicing journey by fixing up my beater ‘13 R56, I’m now about to start the process to replace my head gasket and intake as I think this is the cause of my many many issues. Thank you for posting this for the public , very detailed and thorough
I’m going to put a light layer of Loctite silicone gasket maker on the o-ring and in the groove and bore. BMW gaskets and o-rings are junk so I took your advice and ordered from your link. There’s also a junk o-ring on the pcv valve in my 2006. I haven’t been able to find a source for it separately so it’s gasket maker for the win.
Thanks Yes even through this is an older post, its very valuable for those seeking to purchase a used Gen 1 mini Cooper I would like to add that Mini changed Manual gearboxes in 2005-2006 to a more robust Getrag unit, Which should become a focal point for those desiring to acquire a used Gen 1 Also its very important to look at the chassis of the mini, since its road height is so low, as its common for them to snag on various items normal vehicles do not impact Finally, make a list from these videos of items that commonly wear and need replacement and focus on replacing those items, in order to extend the life of your used mini (aka timing chains, motor mounts, valve cover gasket and plug seals, oil filter housing seal, T-Stat housing, coolant hoses, rear coolant pipe seals, motor mounts, suspension parts, fuel filter (in tank) etc.) If your not a mechanic or technician, who does your own work, or know someone who does, then this can become rather expensive.
How similar is this process for an R50 (Non-S)? We're gotten as far as the valve cover off but I'm struggling to find a video specific to R50s for head gasket replacement
Hello, bought a 2012 and got burned. I have a list of things the local repair shop gave me, turbo, CV boots, amongst other things. It is worth keeping or suck it up and take my losses…
If you put the slave cylinder in, bleed it correctly, and the car still shifts poorly into gears, where would you look next? What’s your process? Thank you in advance.
I would suggest maybe try the clutch master cylinder next there is a second one under the dash it's recommended to change both or maybe you just need to bleed again
Is it just me that thinks this guy sounds comedy actor Steve Carell ? It definitely helped me while watching this tutorial 🤔 although Maxwell Smarts (Get Smart) mini cooper repair would become a CAR-FUFFLE \😂/
Hey buddy, just wanted to say thanks for your videos! I’ve learned a ton from them. I recently bought a Mini R53, and your content has been super helpful throughout the process!
Great video ! Thanks for explaining things as you did the operation. I had my 2005 mini cooper due to a torn boot and dry bearings soon after I purchased the vehicle but now have a noise that starts around 30 mph and gets worse the faster you go with a shimmy starting at 65. Is it possible that he didn't get the splines mated back in as far enough or damaged the bearing as it was reinstalled? If it was an older chevy or Ford, I would say it's a dry speedometer cable as the sound is so much like that. What noise would it make if the bearing is damaged ? Got any ideas? Regards , Ken
You’re a lifesaver man! I was able to successfully do a head gasket job on my 2013 Mini Cooper S i had to do some different things but it was roughly the same as this one! Thank you for making this video
I was looking for the rear caliper tool and tried to zoom in on images at e-commerce shops to make sure the kit has Z tool. Being hard to find it, I finally figured out that the the tool also goes by the letter N 🤣 Great videos thanks for making them now almost 10 years ago! 😁
Love the video and thank you. Just removed the cylinder head definitely a bad gasket mine was exhaust leak into the coolant. Question, I’m seeing a warp of .003”-.007” in the middle highest in center. Is it worth machining one that is .007” out? I had no water in my oil. This one would run perfect for about 45 minutes before building up enough pressure to boil over. All other cooling systems components are working and new.
Resetting the throttle adaptations is same as throttle relearn ? I replaced my throttle body and throttle pedal, but didn’t do the relearn and after certain time it goes to limp mode p1125 code
I've been gifted an r56 and read all the horror stories, because of them I spent 3+ days trying to avoid putting my mini into front end service mode trying to replace the oil filter housing gasket. After watching this and replicating, I wish I'd done it sooner, thank you for putting such a great tutorial together and showing just how easy it is
Great video, encourages me to buy another Mini even if it needs a head gasket done! There’s something both annoyingly complex but also satisfying in how they packaged the engine and to work on it…
I purchased the 7855 it fit in my mini Cooper r50 base model manual transmission five speed get rag but it only spin's do you think i need the 7854 starter thanks.
I completed this install yesterday! This video saved me. It took 2 people to complete it and about 6 hours bc I also made a metal brace for my cracked radiator support at the bottom. This video was incredible and the hardest parts for us were fitting the pin in the hole for the serpentine belt, and unhooking the top clip from the old alternator. Your definitely need two people for this job. THANK YOU!
@@ryanabrahams6446 This was my first time making an in-depth repair like this. I'm glad this video existed! I learned more about the car and probably saved around $500+ from the mechanic!
Mod mini is a legend in DIY repairs. He’s helped me fix a lot of things with my 2004 R50 Cooper. Congrats on your success. Keep coming back to this channel for ALL kinds of great step by step fixes.
