Is there any reason to not cut back all the way to the bottom 12 inches or so of the plant? So long as the corm is intact and you support the flower you could take it all the way down, right?
Great update! Your bananas are looking fantastic. It's been a cool and damp summer here in the UK, so my bananas have grown very slowly. Only really the Musa basjoo that's done much. My Dwarf Brazilian has done the best out of my edible ones.
Thanks for the update, Peter. I would think that under normal growing conditions, that the long days would provide decent growth. I guess the warm temperatures need to be the catalyst.
@@SimplyBananas1 yeah, it’s barely getting above 68°F in the day over summer here. So growth really seems to slow down. At night it has been going down to low the 50s. Annoyingly that’s quite typical here at this time of year.
Remember a few months ago I emailed you that my banana new growth was sick. I figured out why. The spider mite spray I used would get into the cavity where the new leaf unfurls and it would burn the new growth. I stopped using that stuff, luckily the bugs went away and my banana is looking bigger and better than ever. Your bananas are looking huge! They must drive you bananas 😁😁
Been waiting on this update! You have two of my favorite bananas! I have wanted bordalons and the pink lady bananas forever!! So cool to see them in your garden my big ice banana is probably 15’ tall still no flower seems like it every year?
Mystery banana may be Rojo zebrina. I think I saw it maroon or red underneath the leaves. Beautiful update Come check us out and see how our bananas are doing Peace N Love
Those mystery bananas look like baby dwarf cavendish bananas. They get that maroon variegation on their leaves when they're young and then they lose them when they get older.
We’ve had banana trees in our backyard for a few years and never even saw a flower on it and just a couple weeks ago we noticed a beautiful flower just like the ones you see in your video and 2 bunches of 12 bananas total!!! Sooo excited🤗
@SimplyBananas1 i have 500 or so trees. I live in the Virgin Islands, and I am so frightened of a hurricane this year. Debby passed over us before it was named and we got a lot of rain but thankfully, there was little wind and I still lost an Orinoco. I live on the side of my islands highest rainforest mountain where wind is my farms' nemesis.
Hi, I live in Spain, recently bought Musa banana plants. Having problems with browning of leaves, going to try your advice about plenty of water, current temperatures 30/35C, let you know 👍
Hi, I have put a drip feed on my in ground plants and they seem to be perking up. My two pot plants are getting more water and holding their own. We will see, I will let you know how they progress 👍
I’m planning for the upcoming winter in the Charlotte area. Do you think mulching heavy and building a temporary shelter with Christmas lights for warmth would do it?
Could be shock to new conditions... such as different sunlight, water amounts or soil composition, etc. Hard to say exactly... if they are the lowest leaves, this is often normal.
Where are you in South Carolina?? I want to have bananas on my property so picked some up called cavendish Banana I didn’t read or research. Cold hardiness 40 to 30 •f non hardy zone of course is 1-9 I’m in South Carolina go figure they are selling them here though I was getting a deal. Anyway, I wanted to know if they will still grow bananas if there’s a way that I can get them through the cold and still be able to keep these and if they’ll get bigger than 3 feet high and 2 feet wide? Is there still a way that I’ll be able to keep these and if they’ll be able to have bananas?
Hey there, what soil would you recommend recommend for a 6A Musa Basjoo on a slightly raised bed? Any specific soil types I could just go to Home Depot and buy such as miracle, grill, palm, cactus and citrus mix?
@@SimplyBananas1 Thank you for the response. Is there any better name brands you recommend from big box stores like home deport anything maybe better than mircale grow you think I should use? Anything I could mix in with the soil? Thank you again for the help
@@SimplyBananas1hey I planted them and they look good. I’m just scared because since I’ve planted it I had to snip 3 leaves. They were older and smaller than the new ones and were closer to the bottom. They looked kind of like the ones in the video, obviously not shredded, still a hint of green. I was able to peel one right off the trunk and I ripped it off the base and it came out. It could be under watering and I hope that’s what it is and the plant isn’t sick, I water every two days. Is this normal or under watering? I could water once a day unless we get rain
@@Lo1XDImNoob Its fine to water every 2 days... if its really hot and not raining , give them a some more. There is really no perfect amount, but more is better in the summer.
Hey, I have baby bananas and they don’t have any mature leaves yet, they were a bit overwatered so I cut water for a week and a half and today I watered and put them outside. Right now it’s 90 degrees outside and I walked out to check on them and they’re all droopy! Is this the reason behind it? They don’t have mature leaves like this they still have little seedling ones.
@@SimplyBananas1 Sorry, one more question, thank you for the response! I put them outside and one leaf got sunburnt, and I also bought from my local garden center a pretty large Basjoo with a pup coming out in a 10 in container and has a height of 3-4ft. I’ll plant it next weekend or the weekend after because I don’t have much time, but when I do plant it, someone recommended I build a little hut out of wooden stakes and put shade cloth over the top and slowly cut away over the days to help it get used to the sun, this spot receives direct sun from 7AM - 3:30PM. Is this a good idea or are there any other tips to help a banana get used to light? I had the pots in direct sun for 20 minutes today and will probably do 25 tomorrow. And also how often should I water a 10 in pot for a basjoo? It’s still fairly damp so I won’t be watering today.
@@Lo1XDImNoob where are you located? Also if you just bought them, keep them in partial sun/shade for a week or so before full sun. They are likely in a bit of shock.. Water them when every few days or if they get dry. Its hard to say exactly when since it depnds on how fast the plant transpires the water out of the leaves.
@@SimplyBananas1 Zone 6A Massachusetts, yes I had them in direct sun for 30 minutes today, and tomorrow it will be 30 again and slowly it will increase. I’ll water when the top two or three inches are dry if that will help
