Welcome to SeaSpanker Outdoors! This channel is mainly about fishing for trout in Southern California and the Eastern Sierra; but, to be honest, I'll fish for just about anything just about anywhere. If you are interested in fishing but have never tried or even if your a seasoned angler this is a great place to get honest information. The goal of SeaSpanker Outdoors is to give out accurate information, promote inclusion and the sharing of ideas in the fishing community, and hopefully we can all catch more fish.

Great video. I am 15 minutes from santa ana lakes. I am putting a mini jig order together at GSF. Any chance i can get info on what you recommend for our lakes around southern cal. I have the i es you mentioned in this video on my list. Thanks
I'd really love to see you do a video on sight fishing for elusive wild trout. They are by far the biggest challenge and thrill in trout fishing. I usually fish on Virginia soil, where fly fishing is productive because once trout start eating bugs, they rarely go for anything else. But like you, I'll throw spinning gear-jigs, spinners, and so on-and sometimes it works (slim like lottery) because after so many casts, they get annoyed and strike. When I'm doing it, I cut the barb off the jig to keep them on edge.
I go as often as I can during the season. During the hot summer months the trout are only up close in the early morning or late afternoon. During mid day its always good to get on the water in a boat or tube.
Haha thats a real tough question, especially if your talking about one to fish everywhere. If just the sierra it would be brown trout, if its one for everywhere I fish Id have to say Carmel Apple. Honestly I have that one tattooed on my arm.
Congrats on 11K you are so deserving of them. You have the best content on trout for You Tube. I always look forward to your stuff. Still looking forward to your float tube set up video.
Thanks brother I really appreciate that 🙏. That will be coming in the next few weeks. Ive already started working on the outline. Its going to be a floattube buying guide type video but I will also go over how I have mine set up as well as tips and tricks kinda stuff 🤘
Another excellent video, and very informative! Convict lake is Cathy and my favorite fishing spot! Did you trailer your kayak to the lake, and what trailer type do you use Thanks Lee
Thanks Lee! I use a Malone Micro Sport Low Bed 2 Kayak Trailer. Great trailer but if your gonna get a trailer for the yaks make sure you get a “low bed” style trailer. The other style trailers have the kayaks sitting up higher so when you back into the water you still have to physically lift the kayaks off and place them in the water. The “low bed” style is more like a boat trailer so the kayaks will be touching the water and you can easily slide them on or off if that makes sense. Here is the link a.co/d/8p0HlPD
Easily the Katana UL 7’6” with a Shimano Vanquish 1000 SSSP (Japanese) definitely on the more expensive side but well worth the money. I do an annual tackle reveal video during the socal trout season. Was there something you wanted to see more of like rods and reels or terminal tackle or both? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z_Jp86ZB6fw.htmlsi=8CQa0xnwIj3WWcCH
I have been fishing mini jigs (tube jigs) the last couple of years with a lot of success. I ordered and just received my new Katana rod. I have been using a 8' Phenix Mirage. Do you have experience with the Mirage? What do you think of it as a jigging rod?
Awesome. That Katana is an amazing rod for sure. Hope you like it. I actually never fished the Mirage. I have an 8’ Dragonfly and 3 Elixirs. All really awesome rods but the Katana is definitely the rod for me. Another rod that is relatively inexpensive but a really great rod for jigs is the 8’ Daiwa Presso spinning rod. The are only $80 but a really good rod for the price🤘
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors Thanks, Rob. I see that the Katana is rated to toss a 1/64 oz. lure. I wouldn't cast anything that tiny, but it makes me think it would cast 1/32 and 1/16 oz. jigs very well.
@@johnmach4985 wait till you see the Montana videos coming out soon. We were using 1/64 mini jigs in the streams and a couple lakes. Believe it or not you can get those things out there farther than I thought and the trout loved that extra slow presentation. I rarely use stuff that light but when the trout were being stubborn it really was just the ticket
Yeah, i know you definitely know how to fish that lake. As much as you fish and put out content you should definitely look into one of those yaks. Its a bit spendy at first but it really is a game changer especially up there🤘
Definitely. I really enjoy going there from time to time but its so popular that it gets packed. If im goin there i always plan on getting there at first light
I just keep trout when they dont survive the catch or at lakes where keeping them is mandatory. Im planning on doing more catch and cooks in the near future 🤘
Rob, just got the clips today and now I see what u mean about the large snaps even being super small. Those are very trick!! I'll be using these all the time now. Thanks for the tip!
Rob " real Deihl " I forgot again brother what size of the fly fishing snaps do you use ? I tried flipping through at what video I saw them on .. I want to say size 2, thanks, bud !.hey you haven't posted lately 😊
It all depends on which snaps your talking about haha. The Duo Lock snaps that I use for spoons and attaching dropshot rigs are either #0 or #00, the ones I use at Pyramid for the big cuttys are size #2. The fly fishing clips I use for mini jigs and minnows are size L (large) 🤘. Yeah I know, had alot of family obligations this summer so I took a little time off but a new video will be out Monday and things will be back to normal 😎
The are fly fishing snaps and they work great. The size I use are L (large) which sounds strange but the small and medium are just too tiny for me to use. Here is a link if you want to check them out No-Knot Fast Snaps Fly Fishing... www.amazon.com/dp/B094QQZQG8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Hey sea spankers, I’ve Ben watching you for a while and I’m a fisherman myself. I have created my own fishing styles and baits. And I would like to share them with you.
Hey rob I’ve always wanted to fish for Kokanee, never knew I could it do only 4 hours away from vegas until I saw this video lol, is there a certain time of year or parts of the lake I should consider?
I typically dont target kokanee. In this video we were at Fish Lake UT and the kokanee were in prespawn so they were all over that intake prepping to make the journey upstream. Most that target them get them trolling using the same gear that you would use for rainbows. Dodgers and bright colored baits like pinks, yellows, orange, etc. They normally suspend further out in the water except during the spawn. Lots of lakes up there and in Northern California hold them
I have used 6lb braid for mini jigging and it works well but I definitely prefer 4lb as it casts just a bit better. I typically will use 6lb in special conditions like river fishing where there is a strong current or a spot that may be known for large strong trout with lots of submerged obstacles if that makes sense
Awesome video. So much information 💯 I’m going this weekend and the water temp is around 74, hopefully trying to go a little lower in the water might get me my first trout😅
Have you ever tried small hair jigs (1/64-1/32 oz) under a float? Works well for me in glass calm conditions and extremely windy conditions on lake michigan for steelhead
It really depends on the lb test of the line and if its a Japanese version or the version sold here in the states. The information is available online on both
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors i got the US version and I fit 175 yards of the 6lb iron feather. I’m wondering how much more I would need for 3lb iron feather. The listed specs is never accurate from my experience
Hey Rob! "Ths real Deihl " professional Professor..is it worth while fishing big bear at this time of year from the shore ..or just the dam ? Basically, is there good fishing from the shore ?. Thanks, bud
You definitely can get them from shore but I would stick to the west end of the lake. Early morning and late afternoon until the sun goes down are your best bets. I usually will only fish there from sunrise until about 9-10 am and then they shut down until late afternoon. If i go in the afternoon usually between 5pm and sundown is the best time 🤘
Hello Mr Diehl, I’ve been watching your RU-vid channel for a little over a year now. Since I found your channel, I’ve relied on it to help improve my fishing techniques and setup. I typically only fish a few times a year, mainly when my family heads up to the eastern sierras, but I would like to pursue fishing more often. I’ve been using GSF mini jigs and minnows for a few years now and have really struggled. I’ve also tried other plastic baits and lures with minimal results. I don’t mind a bait and wait, but I’m tired of relying on powerbait as my only means of catching fish. I’ve looked at many of your past videos to help figure out what you guys are doing that I’m not, but I’m lost. If there’s any specific video I should watch or advice you can give me on how to fish these plastic baits to catch fish I would really appreciate it. I’m just quite frustrated throwing jig after jig for hours with no results. If you can’t provide help I completely understand, and I’ll continue to watch your videos to gain more knowledge!
No worries at all. Id say from reading your comment and not seeing what your doing that your not presenting your jigs/minnows to any fish. Meaning there aren’t any trout in the section of water your fishing. You dont need to have a flawless technique to get bit. If the trout are there typically all you gotta do is move that bait in front of them and youll get bit. The technique will get refined over time as you catch more in different conditions and all that does is help with consistency of hook ups. If your gear is set up similar to mine, 2-4lb line, 7’6” to 8’ ultralight rod, etc and your doing a slow retrieve with light bounces of the rod, your doing it right. At least good enough to get bit. So I think you may just need to move around more in order to find the biting trout. Thats what we do especially in the sierras. Well hit multiple lakes each day looking for trout that are willing to bite. Just stick with it and it will start to click, im sure of it 🤘
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors I will keep working at it and try moving around more and up and down the water column. Hopefully I’ll start bringing them in and let you know once I start figuring it out. Thank you 🎣🤙!
Awesome info. One bit of advice and something I've had to work on. The use of ah and um while you're speaking takes away from otherwise good information.
It’s very rare to find someone with the ability and articulation to explain exactly what you are doing and what works. Always a pleasure viewing your content. Keep it up and don’t stop.
Thank you again for a great video. Quick question about using a small snap swivel or fast snap to help switch between colors a bit easier. Possible, or should I just learn to tie knots faster? Thanks again
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors do you ever have your line slip out through the opening of the fast snaps? And I know you're not a knot guy, but what do you like to tie your snaps with? Thanks again 🤙
@@robertborah3655 I use a standard Palomar knot and Ive never had the line/knot slip off the fly clip. I have had it come out while tying on but once you have the knot tied its pretty hard for that knot to slide off.
