Welcome to SeaSpanker Outdoors! This channel is mainly about fishing for trout in Southern California and the Eastern Sierra; but, to be honest, I'll fish for just about anything just about anywhere. If you are interested in fishing but have never tried or even if your a seasoned angler this is a great place to get honest information. The goal of SeaSpanker Outdoors is to give out accurate information, promote inclusion and the sharing of ideas in the fishing community, and hopefully we can all catch more fish.

Great video! I am 53 and am now semi retired. Can fish during the week at all the southern cal lakes and eastern sierras all i want now. The old town is amazing. I have opted to get a nucanoe unlimited with the 360 seat and capacity. Going full motorized. Thanks for showing all the gadgets.
Rob thanks for all the information. Talking about line totally makes sense. I have tried to cast 1/32 and they do not go far and this video breaks it down. Thanks for sharing.
No not at all as long as your using a leader the fish wont see anything but your bait. Using highly visible colored braid is mainly important so you as the fisherman can see what your line is doing more easily. For instance if your fishing a river or stream you can watch the line to see how your bait is moving down stream as well as helping with strike detection
Great video. Subscribed also. I’m going to be going wade fishing for speckled trout in early fall and still can’t decide on a chest wader. I think I may like style with boot attached unless u don’t agree. Thank you.
Boot on waders are great and they will certainly get the job done for ya. I just prefer the stocking foot waders with a good pair of boots as I tend to do alot of hiking when I fish in the mountains.
Good catch! I forgot to mention that. Yes I did and I worked the 1/32 every way I knew how and no dice. Somthing about the way the 1/16 was swimming was what they wanted. Usually its 1/32 in those conditions is the ticket 🤷🏼♂️
Killer Footage...but I'm still fiending for you & Estevan to post up that Montana Trip. I used to live a few hundred yards from the Bitterroot River & fished it daily. It really is the The "Last Great Place". God Bless The GSF!!
@JesusLORD690 A Micro Jig w/a Single Barbless Hook is no different than a Small Wooly Bugger or Streamer. And as far scent is concerned, I don't use it but it's fully legal. The Montana Regulations read: ARTIFICIAL LURE: Any man-made lure (including flies) that imitates natural bait. Artificial lures may have a scent infused or applied. Artificial lures do not include fish eggs, any natural or artificial food such as corn and marshmallows, any products that are derivatives of natural foods, any chemically treated or processed natural bait such as salted minnows, nor any artificial dough, paste or edible baits. My friends in Montana were more likely to bend the rules than my California friends. I admit, I probably shouldn't have used Rapalas as much as I used to because they do a bit of lip damage, but I crimped my hooks & can still count all the trout I killed on one hand. In fact, I only recall killing one Westslope and that's because it was just too exhausted to revive. We tried though, for 20 minutes until I was finally forced to BBQ it that evening. We're not Violators, We are protectors of the fisheries who also hate to see people wrecklessly killing fish and just letting 'em float down river. I feel like a complete loser when I kill a fish. Even the time I was so drunk that I stuck an M80 in a Carp....lol. God Bless!!
I appreciate it 🙏. We didn’t get to the Bitterroot on this trip but it sounds amazing. Im working on the footage as I type and it should be out Monday 9/30. We filmed alot so its taking some time 🤘
@JesusLORD690i appreciate the comment but thats just not accurate. We always check local regulations anywhere we fish and all the waters we fished allow conventional fishing. The only difference between an artificial fly and an artificial jig is whatever the fish decide to bite on any given day. Fly fishing and conventional fishing are simply two different methods for accomplishing the same goal. One method is no better or worse than the other. Oh, and GSF mini jigs and minnows do not have any scent 🤘
Don't know if they would drain it rather than poison the lake? Last year wasn't bad for chubs but this year they are everywhere. Going to build a new dam below the old dam. Best fishing is the middle of November.
@@gladegoodrich2297 yeah its a tough call for sure. I definitely have respect for Utah as they actively manage their waters. I Just wish California would do more of that
I was actually just there a couple weeks ago. Awesome lake. We didn’t get the big ones we were after but we sure got into a bunch of bows. Here is the video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NZb_GnOALLs.htmlsi=i_9Zk15ypnTtCqQa
Ah I miss that lake. My folks had a place up there for 20 years. I lived there for a while. It was always a great escape from flat land life. It's one of my favorite lakes to catch trout.
Great video. I am 15 minutes from santa ana lakes. I am putting a mini jig order together at GSF. Any chance i can get info on what you recommend for our lakes around southern cal. I have the i es you mentioned in this video on my list. Thanks
The best advice I can give first is GSF baits that work at several lakes is have a good variety of natural, lights, darks, and brights, as the fish change their minds daily on what they are gonna bite. That said for SoCal some of my favorites are ghost shrimp, big stick, el diablo, carmel apple, super shad, brown trout, bubble gum, gold pearl and brown, and yellow white
I go as often as I can during the season. During the hot summer months the trout are only up close in the early morning or late afternoon. During mid day its always good to get on the water in a boat or tube.
Haha thats a real tough question, especially if your talking about one to fish everywhere. If just the sierra it would be brown trout, if its one for everywhere I fish Id have to say Carmel Apple. Honestly I have that one tattooed on my arm.
Congrats on 11K you are so deserving of them. You have the best content on trout for You Tube. I always look forward to your stuff. Still looking forward to your float tube set up video.
Thanks brother I really appreciate that 🙏. That will be coming in the next few weeks. Ive already started working on the outline. Its going to be a floattube buying guide type video but I will also go over how I have mine set up as well as tips and tricks kinda stuff 🤘
Another excellent video, and very informative! Convict lake is Cathy and my favorite fishing spot! Did you trailer your kayak to the lake, and what trailer type do you use Thanks Lee
Thanks Lee! I use a Malone Micro Sport Low Bed 2 Kayak Trailer. Great trailer but if your gonna get a trailer for the yaks make sure you get a “low bed” style trailer. The other style trailers have the kayaks sitting up higher so when you back into the water you still have to physically lift the kayaks off and place them in the water. The “low bed” style is more like a boat trailer so the kayaks will be touching the water and you can easily slide them on or off if that makes sense. Here is the link a.co/d/8p0HlPD
Easily the Katana UL 7’6” with a Shimano Vanquish 1000 SSSP (Japanese) definitely on the more expensive side but well worth the money. I do an annual tackle reveal video during the socal trout season. Was there something you wanted to see more of like rods and reels or terminal tackle or both? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z_Jp86ZB6fw.htmlsi=8CQa0xnwIj3WWcCH
I have been fishing mini jigs (tube jigs) the last couple of years with a lot of success. I ordered and just received my new Katana rod. I have been using a 8' Phenix Mirage. Do you have experience with the Mirage? What do you think of it as a jigging rod?
Awesome. That Katana is an amazing rod for sure. Hope you like it. I actually never fished the Mirage. I have an 8’ Dragonfly and 3 Elixirs. All really awesome rods but the Katana is definitely the rod for me. Another rod that is relatively inexpensive but a really great rod for jigs is the 8’ Daiwa Presso spinning rod. The are only $80 but a really good rod for the price🤘
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors Thanks, Rob. I see that the Katana is rated to toss a 1/64 oz. lure. I wouldn't cast anything that tiny, but it makes me think it would cast 1/32 and 1/16 oz. jigs very well.
@@johnmach4985 wait till you see the Montana videos coming out soon. We were using 1/64 mini jigs in the streams and a couple lakes. Believe it or not you can get those things out there farther than I thought and the trout loved that extra slow presentation. I rarely use stuff that light but when the trout were being stubborn it really was just the ticket
Yeah, i know you definitely know how to fish that lake. As much as you fish and put out content you should definitely look into one of those yaks. Its a bit spendy at first but it really is a game changer especially up there🤘
Definitely. I really enjoy going there from time to time but its so popular that it gets packed. If im goin there i always plan on getting there at first light
I just keep trout when they dont survive the catch or at lakes where keeping them is mandatory. Im planning on doing more catch and cooks in the near future 🤘
Rob, just got the clips today and now I see what u mean about the large snaps even being super small. Those are very trick!! I'll be using these all the time now. Thanks for the tip!
Rob " real Deihl " I forgot again brother what size of the fly fishing snaps do you use ? I tried flipping through at what video I saw them on .. I want to say size 2, thanks, bud !.hey you haven't posted lately 😊
It all depends on which snaps your talking about haha. The Duo Lock snaps that I use for spoons and attaching dropshot rigs are either #0 or #00, the ones I use at Pyramid for the big cuttys are size #2. The fly fishing clips I use for mini jigs and minnows are size L (large) 🤘. Yeah I know, had alot of family obligations this summer so I took a little time off but a new video will be out Monday and things will be back to normal 😎
The are fly fishing snaps and they work great. The size I use are L (large) which sounds strange but the small and medium are just too tiny for me to use. Here is a link if you want to check them out No-Knot Fast Snaps Fly Fishing... www.amazon.com/dp/B094QQZQG8?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Hey sea spankers, I’ve Ben watching you for a while and I’m a fisherman myself. I have created my own fishing styles and baits. And I would like to share them with you.
