A rough info dump regarding the parallels between Gintama characters and their historical counterparts. If you're not interested into that, you can safely ignore it. Many characters are based off historical figures and usually, only part of the name was changed, so I imagine it would be really frustrating if someone wrote "Katsura Kotarou" in a school exam instead of "Katsura Kogoro". Or "Hijikata Toshiro" instead of "Hijikata Toshizo". You can look up a lot of those, even one-time characters like Ito have a real life counterpart. However, while this an intuitive way to look at things, it's also oversimplified. Some characters have parallels to multiple historical figures (or even those from legend). Gintoki is usually said to be inspired by Kintaro, a folktale samurai. His story shows strong parallels to the personal life of Sakamoto Ryoma, though (Sakamoto Tastuma is also inspired by him, to be precise his founding of the Kaientai). He was a ronin and amazing swordsman, hunted by the Bakufu, and was sheltered by a landlady called Otose. He's still famous for paving the way for the Mejin Restoration. In different, he could be considered an inspiration for all of the Joi 4. Otose is another example, she managed an inn after her husband died and took in fugitives that fled from the Bakufu (similar to the Gintama Otose, who takes care of outcasts, but more political). She had a strong bond with Ryoma and he missed her dearly after her death. Interestingly enough, while Tae has no historial counterpart with that name, there is at least one character, who has strong parallels to her: Narasaki Ryo, the eldest daughter of a noble family, that declined after their father's death. She took charge and tried to keep the family together, often by selling her own belongings so the others wouldn't have to. And when one her sisters was about to be sold into a brothel, she prevented it by threatening those responsible with just a dagger. Ryoma heard about this and married her eventually because of her strength. Now a lot of that stuff is a matter of interpretation and all of it might just be pure coincidence. But I prefer to think that Sorachi knows about the characters and put everything in on purpose. Japanese history is full of interesting characters, especially in a time of enormous changes like the end of the Edo period, so if you read on it, you might find even more parallels and characters that reappear in Gintama.
Isn’t this also where both Gintoki and Tsukuyo are the only known characters base on Japanese myth? Like Tsukuyo is moon goddess Tsukuyomi and Gintoki is Kintaro. Forgot about umibozu being his literal name lol.

Honestly disregarding any rankings, who'd want to be jumped, stripped naked and humiliated publicly? Even if i gave 0 fxxks about being on the bottom of the list, I'd still be running and hiding just to avoid being assaulted that way 😂
Tsukuyo is very considerate sharing her rank, but the others are also pretty nice here by letting her join instead of crushing her (they could have easily done that) just to increase their ranks and get a much higher ranking by absorbing Kagura. I would have also liked more interaction between Tsukuyo and Kyuubei. If you think about, there are a lot of parallels and similarities between them. - They were both forced to reject their identity as a firl at a young age. - They have injuries in the face. - They have canon crushes on other characters, though they're not as obsessed as certain others. - They are leaders of paramilitary groups. - They started out as villains. - There are also parallels in their story and character growth later, but those would be spoilers. In other ways they are completely opposite, like Kyuubei is completely open with her cursh, whereas Tsukuyo tries to deny it. I know jealously might first come to mind, especially after the last arc, when seeing those four together, but surprisingly, that's not a topic at all. You'd be surprised how well they get along, apart from the occasional argument started by Sarutobi.

The disrespect on that poll hahaha Since I'm not japanese and was late in the gintama train, I only heard rumors and theories online that the japanese fans conspired to maintain Shinpachi's 8th place perpetually, because hachi = 8 and his glasses (the real Shinpachi) looks like an 8. It's wild that this arc is where the Kabukicho peeps first meets Tsukuyo. The ED also labels them with rankings. It gets updated after every ep of the Character Poll Arc.
I love this arc but personally i've never cared for any popularity poll much. I don't get invested or vote. I don't go around looking for polls. I don't get angry if my favorite character is ranked low. I just scan it out of curiosity if i happen to stumble on it and move on immediately. However i do feel ridiculously proud of the fact that Gintoki's never lost 1st place in every poll. He and Luffy are the only shonen protagonists who get 1st place in their manga's popularity polls consecutively. Gintoki is one of a kind. There is no one else like him.
Yeah, i hate that poll too. And to be honest most of the fanbase of Gintama is female (me included) and japanese fans usually tend to always hate on women and views it mostly like they're choosing an otome game route instead of reviewing a character. Sarutobi being so low it's outrageous. But aside from that, Kagura being 6 when she is the basis of most of the anime comedy is WILD

An interesting fact is that about 60% of the audience who watched the movie “Gintama: The Final” were women, especially young adults and people in their 30s
This may be one of the silliest arcs, but it has a few serious and relevant messages: - Don't base you oninions on opninions of others. - Don't base your self-worth on the opinions of others. - Don't take things like popularity polls seriously. You can see an obvious preference for fighters here. In the manga the results of the latest poll were revealed sometimes, and it could vary a lot, depending on the latest arc. And leave it to Sorachi to get taken out by one of his own characters. At least it was his favourite waifu that did the deed and since he's a secret M, he might even have enjoyed (part of) it.

Really actually nothing yet bro, it's just the fandom of the characters who grew big overtime especially if there were passionate voters like that fangirl who voted naoya from jjk 😶 It's an advantage if the character appeared first than the other.
