After watching both movies that came out recently, I can easily say, the spirit of Dune was missing in them. Spirit that also came with music. This montage is still the closest to the heart of what Dune was about. They had such a low budget, yet did better than hundreds of millions of dollar movies. Poetic and theatrical.

Each scene portrays different aspects of humanity except for Paul. Wonder, longing, stoicism, resignation, surprise, terror, birth, pain, death. Paul however feels everything, all at once. It was an extraordinary piece of storytelling.

I love DV’s Dune but for me this still remains the best single piece of Dune media material I’ve seen. There is something so visceral and beautiful about this sequence that has always stayed with me since the first time I saw it.

I don't like DV's adaptation. Not the music. Not the actors. Everything is cold and ugly with no emotions. Seriously, the guy would travel back in time with a billion dollar to document the crucifixion of Christ, he would manage to make us feel nothing about it. He is a master of boredom.

I have watched both miniseries Dune 2000 and Children of Dune in about a week last month. I liked Dune and liked Children of Dune even more. I thought the actor of Paul did an amazing job and even though I liked James McAvoy well enough in Split, glass, wanted and the X-men movies I was not looking forward to the story shifting from Paul to Leto, but I was positively surprised that McAvoy was also incredible in this. The more time passes since I watched this (it’s only been 3 weeks so far) the more I like both of these series. I think the only series of films I like more than Dune at this point are the lord of the rings movies. I don’t think the Denis Villeneuve movies will be able to change my opinion but I will give them a chance.

I always felt sorry for Paul. He knew from the first that pregnancy and birth would kill Chani, so much so that he was aware of and allowed Irulan to administer contraceptives to Chani. Then, once she had started on the ancient fertility diet, all he could do was sit helplessly by as her body burned itself out trying to give birth. He was so lock-stepped into his visions, he couldn't change anything if he had wanted to, and he did want to. Can you imagine sitting there, going through every pain, every agony that your love was undergoing, knowing bitterly that there is NOTHING you can do to stop it, nothing you can do to help them, utterly nothing you can do to save them? To sit there helplessly, unable to change even the slightest thing you know is coming for both them and yourself? Even Alia knew what was coming to an imperfect extent and she couldn't do anything to save herself, either. In the books, it was the son he never saw in his visions. In the mini-series, he saw a son but never saw the daughter. Either way, the twins were both his way out and Humanity's way out, too, but at a truly terrible price for one of them. Also, poor Alia never really stood a chance. She did okay, more or less, while growing her own personality until the Baron came to the fore and essentially possessed her. She didn't have a twin who was going through a similar experience with whom she could correlate her own experiences and to help her defeat the inner memories. She never stood a real chance. I always saw that as a tragedy. Lastly, can you imagine being put into a deathstill *alive*? Talk about horror.

Why does everyone feel sorry for Alia?? Lol.. don’t mean to laugh.. But she was whacka doodle as a child.. Took waaaaay too much spice.. Pushed a loving Duncan Idaho away.. And essentially self imploded.. Alia had the power to be good and do great things.. But in the end.. I feel like her egotistical ideations got in the way, and she essentially turns into a villain.. A bad guy.. A bad person.. But that’s the beauty of books.. Everyone can have their own interpretation..

I feel like Alia could have been a good character and the setup for her in the first book is very interesting, but I do not feel that the sequels delivered. The 12 year time skip between the 1st 2 books so we never see her growing up certainly didn't help.

@@nomadsnapper We feel sorry for Alia because she never had a chance - she was doomed from the moment her mother drank the Water of Life while pregnant with her. Yeeeeeep, and she knew it. I mean, letting her live with the guilt and knowledge that her actions had been utterly pointless in the end was maybe worse than killing her. Frank Herbert did kill her off in an earlier draft of Dune Messiah. She was collateral damage when the Fremen mob came to kill Mohiam, and Irulan happened to be visiting her at the time. I'm glad Irulan survived - not because I liked the book version of her character (novel-Irulan was really unlikeable) - but because Julie Cox knocked it out of the park with this character. She made Irulan one of my favorite characters, second only to Duncan Idaho.

Paul told her that he gave orders that she was not to be harmed. She sensibly stayed out of the way while all the killings went on around her.
