I toured that boot, when I was in Germany, its fascinating, and for something that looks so huge from the dock, sure looks different inside. Thanks for the great memories.
These ships are pushing $6 billion CA ea, the US Constellation Class is approx $1.4 billion CA each and is similarly equipped so what are we getting for the extra $5 billion?
Building them in Canada and creating domestic jobs and capabilities. If we opted to have the British build these ships for us it would cost significantly less money, but we would lack the ability to maintain our fleet of Type 26 frigates domestically.
@@danlegris387 The engineers are Canadian and at the end of the project we will have shipyards capable of building ships that have a displacement of 8,000 tons and have the ability to maintain our own fleet of frigates. The benefits are still worthwhile.
@@danlegris387 Engineers still need to be involved with the actual construction of the project and the Canadian government spent over C$4B modifying the design because the original Type 26 City Class was an ASW ship with limited AAW capabilities. The deal also comes with technology transfer, so the British are teaching the engineers at our shipyards how to design and maintain a modern warship.
Canadas navy has been pillaged for decades. And with the new threats from fighting terrorists with no intelligence, navy or airforce canadas defense has been gutted and the new weapons not capable in the new cold war. 2017 strong secure engaged was a good step but the Dnd and Parliament didnt realize how fast the new cold war was accelerating. Canada needs thesr Frigates soon, plus need minium of 4 fast Asw Destroyers or 1 to 2 aircraft carriers with anti submarine warfare helicopters/spy planes, jets. Also canada needs right away new submarines. Minimum 6 to 10 Attack submarines preferably Nuclear Attack submarines. Because Nuclear attack subs can sail across to Indian ocean and south china sea and also a nuclear attack sub can patrol the arctic under the ice then punch out the ice and launch an attack on land along with torpedo and intelligence our current subs cannot launch land attacks nore patrol the arctic or can travel massive distance with ease. Also need refueling ships landing crafts few amphibious ships like hovercrafts for arctic operations and deffiently need Nuclear arctic ice breakers for operating all our ships in the arctic. I hope canada can first finally acknowledge what canada needs and second realize that Canadas Defense policy Needs to be Updated Now. And last the procurement process needs to be fixed and accelerated or else Canada will lose its interests and possibly its land. Since canada cant defend against russia or china with its equipment currently and the Uk technically being the mother country but not helping militarly only offers help in trade which Canada doesnt want to give it. And Canada refuses to Allow the United states or Britan to Operate in Canadas arctic. And with china and russia eyeing the arctic and investing in arctic equipment for the last 2 decades Canada is fucked time is running out.
Was a good choice for a frigate. But again with canadian stupidity the new frigates are taken the role of Halifax class frigates good, former canadian destroyers which isnt good and mostly going to be taken over for the upholder class submarines. Canada needs to acquire new destroyers and submarines especially submarines. Submarines and destroyers with the frigates for submarine warfare etc that or get no more destroyers and just buy new anti submarine warfare helicopters and planes but again Canada doesnt have 1 aircraft carrier to carry any planes
Really 1/4 of the ship taken up by the 'mission bay' for what, humanitarian and disaster causes, I thought it was a warship... jeez, give us more missiles, we still using harpoon and the new naval strike missile is 50% less of a warhead and less range than Harpoon blk II, its two steps forward and one step back, competition is using hypersonics with 500kg warheads while ours are subsonic with 150kg warheads, all that room on that tonnage and still underarmed, railgun is dead, laser going the same way, we are losing ground on Chinese and Russian technology. Hey its not all bad though, female sailors will have their own quarters..Gimme a break!
the Canadian program should stop as long as lockheed martin is involved. the cost overruns, the anspy-7 untried radar is going to be a major problem. before we get too deep we need to review and have a different consortium complete this program.
The type XXI U-boat wasn't copied the Electroboat Principle was. That being sophisticated weapons, Sensors and an enhanced underwater performance. The type XXI U-boat was the first modern attack submarine and sported an underwater performance comparable to a modern SSK.
Great presentation. A few things have changed since you made this. Canada has decided to include the British Sea Ceptor. I THINK (correct me if I'm wrong) that the radar will be the Saab Sea Giraffe. The other thing that has changed is that Covid 19 has set back everybody's schedule by one or even two years.
This needs updating, Canadas purchased the Naval strike missile in lieu of harpoons and will use the Sea Sceptor missile system as the ciws instead of the Vulcan Phalanx guns
@@AuntieVenom2 no they went with 2 30mm autocannons instead, they're more effective against small boats and helicopters because of the longer range but they aren't a dedicated CIWS.
Don't hold your breath, covid19 put a pretty huge dent in our pocketbook and I'd imagine that the cuts are coming, at best I'd say 6 rather than the 15 on the books
Captas family are tow cable radars too. Source: www.thalesgroup.com/en/markets/defence-and-security/naval-forces/underwater-warfare/bluescan/captas-family
Wow, thanks for this walk through, Im building a 1:144 scale model of this exact U boat (by Revell of Germany, kit # 05078) including the interior, and the instructions are not clear at all on proper colors etc... this will be a great reference for my project.. thanks for posting this.
why? We learned from the Zumwalt and LCS fiasco and went with already proven design. If anything you guys should have joined the group FREMM purchase. Look at the RN T26 and then T31 program great mix $$$ and $$. CAN & AUS you're gold bricking at the wrong time ... But A for trying?
very well done, however speed DOES matter, especially if there is a torpedo in the water or if attached to a U.S. carrier group. And we should be buying twice as many, however we will be lucky to get what is allotted for before the liberals cancel the program.
wake up !aside from an 'aor' the cons/neocons have never built or bought a naval vessel except during WW! when there was a coalition war time government so as these were supposed to have been ordered over ten years ago....................
Interesting the large differences in the radar masts of the three versions. I would be interested to know the practical differences. I do believe the Australian version will be an Aegis system similar to their Aegis equiped Hobart Class destroyers. That system is believed to be capable of tracking over 100 targets at ranges up to 190km and engage them with multiple missiles at over 150km. I do believe the Canadian navy will be joining the Aegis club with its frigates which makes me wonder why the very different radar mast to the Australian ships? As the RN ships will not be Aegis equiped, I wonder what the potential capabilities of the British system is?
Canada has already ordered aegis/spy7 radar, was recently approved by us Congress ,I'm pretty sure that the whole program was to placate the U.S. and NATO re: our defense spending gap
Interesting, however we will not be equipping the ships with the phalanx system, instead we will use the sea sceptor missile quad packed in a 6 cell launcher as our ciws and will carry a mix of essm and standard missiles in the mk 41 launchers.
We are one, YES We are One, No problem. Now UKGB is out Yes out of Eu, Old Friends Are Back to Trade as one Has ONE, No Politics only Trade and Defence AS ONE.
Yes. After over 40 sterile years captivity, we Brits have at last wised up and realised who our REAL friends are, and always have been. It's a joy to be free of the loathsome EU and even better to be back with our own FAMILY. Hopefully then, our common future is now a close CANZUK (Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom) association of kindred nations. Not the Empire reborn but the free choice of four free and equal Peoples. "Twixt my house and thy house the pathway is broad, In thy house or my house is half the world's hoard; By my house and thy house hangs all the world's fate, On thy house and my house lies half the world's hate. For my house and thy house no help shall we find Save thy house and my house -- kin cleaving to kind; If my house be taken, thine tumbleth anon. If thy house be forfeit, mine followeth soon. Twixt my house and thy house what talk can there be Of headship or lordship, or service or fee? Since my house to thy house no greater can send Than thy house to my house -- friend comforting friend; And thy house to my house no meaner can bring Than my house to thy house -- King counselling King!" I remember going on board the Ocelot and Cavalier many years ago in Chatham. Might have to make another visit at some point . Where are the Ocelot's Prop's ?
Removed due to official secrets act….i was told they could be identified by their sound so they are hidden away somewhere! If they know the sound a foreign country can match it to that submarine snooping around….or something to that effect!
The cost overruns are too stupid for words...criminal...the cost now is estimated to maybe hit 70 billion...let me compare it to a US super carrier...nuclear powered...at 13 billion each...Canada could buy 5...and have 5 billion left over! Something really stinks about these cost overruns...
get informed; US purchases do not ever include cost to operate. In Canada the cost is the total prior to 20 year refit. same with fighters or is said to be.
It's not an overrun, they haven't started construction. It's a change in the estimate. As the other person has said, the 70 billion is the entire cost for all 15 ships over their entire lifetime, including staffing and weapons and maintenance through most of the 21st century. It comes to under $100m per year per ship. That amoun is comparable to what other navies spend on ships like this. Furthermore, that money is practically already built into the RCN budget, since right now they are paying to maintain and run the Halifax class and only recently decommissioned the Iroquois class.
@@ambiguate the 280s were decommissioned in 2005...my cousin was captain of one of the replacements...337 hmcs Fredricton...stalker of the seas...he now works in Ottawa as one of the leaders on navy capital development...a Virginia class nuclear sub costs 3.4 billion over its lifetime...we could have 20 of those by comparison...Australia and the UK costs are significantly lower over lifetime...it is a common known fact that Canadian shipyards always..always cost more!
@@stephensalt6229 I don't think the 3.4b number for the virginia class includes operating costs/personell/etc. while the number for the CSC does. I'd be happy to read something that says so in a detailed cost breakdown because I haven't been able to find this anywhere. Other thing to keep in mind is that's USD, so the right comparison is about 4.4b CAD. I think its true that its more expensive to build the CSC in canada than it would be to buy them from someone else. But if its the right amount of money, isn't it worth it to be able to build our own warships and not rely on anyone else?
You must be spending you’re retirement traveling and viewing submarines, what an awesome time that has to be! Thanks for the videos. It’s hard to find info on ww2 era British subs
