I wasn't sure what a killdeer was and had to look it up. They do have similar colors! This mockingbird is the Northern Mockingbird.

I thought so too until I had a good look at a Killdeer up close and saw there was a clear difference between it and the Mockingbird attacking the hawk here

Our guide said he had never seen it in person and especially not with that snake, which apparently is very venomous and the most dangerous snake in Central and South America!
