found this vid by complete accident bc I was searching for why I can't tell 1sts and 5ths apart easily; thought "one of my favs personally is 31tet but I wanna get more "in tune" (hurr durr :B) with just intonation!" and! as another music nerd girl version of a pedantic white dude I gotta say I loved the explanation of this all! I was currently aware of a lot of the facts but hearing it concisely explained was satisfying! wonderful job in this vid! sound is the frequency of air pressure, so music is- in a sense- complete magic. frequency is the powerhouse of the universe! (electromagnetism is baffling)

This is the most accessible video addressing equal temperament vs. just tuning that I have seen - thank you for making and sharing this video!

they're both mesured in frequency, which is 1/time 1Hz=1/s 1bpm=1/min

3:27 The exact frequency ratios (7/4 969c and 7/6 267c ) can be heard in the beginning of Ellen Arkbro's For Organ and Brass!) Sounded very familiar

I got interested in synths from ELP first, then all the rock bands including the Beatles, and then finally late bumped into Wendy. That was the pinnacle and still is. This vid left out Vlads contribution of the envelope control. Now that was a marvelous manipulation of a note, Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release. That is where Wendy shines. Along with the colors and timbre. I could care less what Wendy does to her body her mind is sharp and she is free to live with all of us screwed up people and just fit in no matter where she fits in on the mess of humanity. Everyone is OK in my eyes unless you are a murderer. She is intelligent and a great composer from the discs and vinyl that I was lucky to aquire. And sorry Wendy but I did get more into baroque music after hearing Scarlatti and the rest. Thanks for the painstaking work with the monophonic synth. Impeccable results are appreciated.

As a barbershop singer (who goes through a complex interplay between the two systems) the biggest advantage of just intonation is that this is generally (this applies to linear harmonic systems, two dimensional harmonic systems such as church bells have a different series) follow the natural overtones of the instruments. Thus, an instrument never actually plays a single note but the entire overtone series of that note, and if you play a note that isn't exactly the note of the overtone, it will clash. The biggest problem with just intonation is that it only works in that one key (with one root has the base or tonic). The second biggest problem is that if you keep balancing every interval perfectly, the result can be unstable, with the tonic drifting either upwards or downwards. Equal temperament can provide clashes between the natural overtones and the other notes in the chord but the ability to modulate from one key to another is so superior that we can (in our minds) forgive the harmonic clashes of some of the resulting chords. However, it comes at a price. In barbershop harmony, four people sing pitches, often slightly adjusted for just intonation (although they aren't thinking in that way) so that the natural overtones combine to create a fifth voice above the voices, a technique that is called "ringing" the chord. And you can't do that in strict equal temperament.

I bought switched on Bach when I was about 12 it was simply brilliant along with Tomita, I didn't see a clockwork orange as I was far too young at the time but I could instantly here the sound of Carloss when Tron arrived, the makers were Disney so I wouldn't have bothered but the soundtrack was instantly recognisable and just makes the film Wendy is always someone that I would love to meet and say thanks for pushing electronic music 🙂

@APMTenants

If you want to say she was a pioneering TRANS musician, I would whole-heartedly agree. But to call her a pioneering female musician is not truthful, especially when the her biggest contributions were made before her transition. If I win the super bowl, then transition to female, am I now the first female to win the super bowl?
@pazuzu66.6
@pazuzu66.6 2 месяца назад
She identified as a woman long before her medical transition, she started HRT in early 1968 which encapsulates all of her musical career, she couldn’t come out as trans because unsurprisingly, it was the 60s and 70s.
@APMTenants
@APMTenants 2 месяца назад
@@pazuzu66.6 like I said, if you want to say she was a pioneering TRANS musician, that would be true. She didn’t transition until the 70s, but that is beside the point. Huge fan. Literally have all of her records, including the original issues with Walter on the spine. She is not an example of a pioneering woman musician. Period
@pazuzu66.6
@pazuzu66.6 2 месяца назад
@@APMTenants Just because the public wouldn’t accept her identity doesn’t mean she wasn’t a prominent woman in her field, she started HRT in 68, which is her medically transitioning, that doesn’t take anything away from her.
@APMTenants
@APMTenants 2 месяца назад
@@pazuzu66.6 did she kick open the doors for women? Did she make women believe they could also be part of this genre? NO. In fact, she even hid the fact that she was trans. She is not a role model to women as the video implies
@pazuzu66.6
@pazuzu66.6 2 месяца назад
@@APMTenants First off, even prominent women couldn’t open the doors for other women, Capcom’s music team was made up almost entirely of women making them some of the most influential VG soundtrack musicians, yet they never got credit for their work, that’s how patriarchy works Second, she absolutely did make women believe they could be part of the genre, some of the most prominent Electronic female musicians today list her as an influence Third, she hid the fact that she was trans because it was the 60s and 70s, discrimination against LGBTQ people was still at an all time high, it’s not her fault she couldn’t come out What is the point of taking any of this away from her? Time isn’t stagnant, we can look back and see her contributions as a trans woman and see that she was a pioneer despite the times.
