Welcome to Electronic Supersonic. I’m Hedge. My channel is about synthesis and sound design. Few things you ought to know.
• As of 2020 I’m completely blind. Do not pick on my visuals. That’s a ban. • Do not ask for stems. Do not ask for sounds. It’s just what you see in Community posts. • Critique related to sounds should include detail. Synths have parameters. Effects have parameters. • Kind words are appreciated. I presently don’t need donations. But thanks for the thought.
Ah yes I remember it now, very good! There's a similar song to this called Get A Way by Maxx, apparently they were influenced by this artist. If you want to do that one as well that would also be interesting, it has a really great bassline.
I literally used a Roland D70 choir sample and put EQ on it. Some stereo processing too. My channel is about sound design. Not just using presets and ready sounds. I've kind of just learned to work this way. But I've heard similar sounds on different sample CDs but never really used them.
You could potentially use those same respective organ and sawtooth patches from the M1 and Wavestation to approximate the Polymoog sound (I’ve learned was) utilized for the Cliff Richard recording of “We Don’t Talk Anymore”, Hedge. As of September 2024, I hope the fracture in your tailbone will knit sooner rather than later.
oh, the inconvenience with the tailbone is a small price to pay. I rescued a young lady from a bad riptide. She did lose her bikini in the process. So we've got a lot of compliments that day. Absolutely love the mix. Drums alone. Tasty! always loved the polymoog too!
i'm a terrible music teacher. I play by ear. I can give you a MIDI file, but you will have to figure out what's doing what because Logic isn't particularly good at exporting them.. Would that work? Email me, in about.
I always get questions about things I don't do. Some people assume that I repair synthesizers. I do not. Some people assume that I play pianos. I do not. Some people think my channel is about samples. It's not. So this is no different really. sheet music, music theory all that stuff. I don't touch that. :p A long time ago I did come across a pretty good midi file. But it did sound rather anemic so I had to slow it down and then learn the parts by ear. my idea of transcription :-), maybe you can find it, load it into any program and display it as score? This was a very long time ago. But maybe it's still around?
i think of all these parts put together, add lyrics and then you have something that had a huge cultural impact....it's amazing to me still how such step by step creation can lead to gold
Now this is probably the most accurate (in terms of recreating the original sound design) cover of any song i've ever heard on YT. Absolutely stellar and impressive work. If i hadn't know it's a cover, i'd have thought this was something taken straight from original mixing stems.
The song is in 4/4 time, but some beats are skipped or implied in certain measures, creating a dynamic rhythm. Just a reminder, this channel focuses on synthesis and sound design, not music theory. Thanks!
how does the aftertouch work? are the setting global or different per patch? like for brasa 1 how do i know how it should sound? my Dx7 is dead and am trying to use Dexed but am trying to match the Modulation and aftertouch.. can you help?
on the original DX7 with stock firmware, it should just work. On the upgraded DX7 or on the mkII there are options for filtering it out. Unfortunately I cannot help you with any kind of repairs from afar. And I'm completely blind so you wouldn't want me tinkering with your DX anyway :-)
@Hedge777 oh no, I don't need it fixed. I just want to be able to use the aftertouch settings in the Dexed but also in the Montage. I don't know what the default settings might be. Are they a global setting or on individual patch?
@@Hedge777 Am sorry, somehow my response didn't get posted. I've mapped the Dexed parameters with the Montage FMX parameters but am short in finding out what the aftertouch setting are... the original patches converted into the Montage have no modulation wheel settings and no aftertouch settings. That is what am looking for.. am close to Syntaur so maybe I'll see if they can fix my DX7. Thanks for your response and the video is great..
well, as you know, DX7 voice data does not contain these settings. Dexed closely replicates it's function page. I'm completely blind now, but I believe it was called Param? I just edit the damn XML file that stores the settings. And I couldn't tell you much about the Montage because I simply don't use it. i'm sure it shouldn't be too hard to find the modulation page and assign whatever you want to aftertouch or mod wheel? That would be RTFM time for me. :-)
@Hedge777 I see. That's what I needed to know. 🙂 so just set it on a sweet spot that works I suppose. Am still gonna have to get my DX7 working again and the M1 or buy new ones. Thanks for the info.
Beautiful view and great video! I have a question about the “what time is love riff”. Do you need an OB-8 or Oberheim emulation to replicate that? Or can it be done on any synth?
i thought it was a bass guitar when i first heard it. but this one kinda loud but the bass and synths blend with the guitar kinda doubles the lead guitar that makes it so haunting.
take your plain vanilla 909 snare with not too long a decay. Pitch it to match the pitch that you're hearing. That is your snare sound. In this particular case it's not going to matter whether it comes out of the older or newer Akai. Don't get too hung up on that. Unfortunately a lot of people get fixated on minutia and never get anything done. Don't be that guy. Now go back to watching cat videos. :-)
Hey look, it's Joe Pesci! Good to have you back, man, and I thoroughly enjoyed the layering. And here I thought the final sound at 5:00 was some fat lady walking on the floor above you.
you want a blind man to diagnose a problem with your DX from thousands of miles away? I appreciate your confidence in my abilities, but I think in this case you're asking for the impossible. :-)
not in the US. In Panama, Pacific Coast. Although most of my neighbors are from the US and Canada. But I love it here just for the weather. Same weather all year-round. Nice, warm ocean. As much as I love SoCal, the water was just too cold for me.
@@Hedge777 Yeah, amazing, if it were me I'd be wondering which synth to have at the window next? Did you ever do a cover of the "Miami Vice" opening theme, that'd be pretty cool;-)
Yes, Miami Vice Opening Theme here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YZ91cUM6PZo.html And: Crockett's Theme ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zBMRiAxFX_4.html&pp=gAQBiAQB Second is a more elaborate video using drones and so on. ~Hedge
well, my original attempt at remaking it goes back to the mid 1990s. I actually used my Yamaha TX816 and a Roland MKS-70. So I already knew what all the sounds were. But it took me a long time to learn all the other tricks. About a year ago, I took another crack at it, using all the modern gimmicks. And then you reminded me about it and so I decided to post it. I just had to change a thing or two and introduce some extra effects and things that I didn't have in the project. But cool, cool suggestion :-) ~Hedge
what would really nail it 100% is the SPX 90 on the aux returns. You have to have a really grainy digital reverb behind it. Mines too clean. But maybe I'll dig up something similar. I remember getting pretty good results. Using my Boss SE-70 and other fx. ~Hedge
well, all the DX stuff is easy. It's just TX816 presets. Factory stuff. However, the JX sound is a sample of my MKS 70. And it's a big sample. And all the pad sounds are too. Unless you find a way to rebuild them there's really no way to complete the picture. not unless I reprogram them for some other synthesizer. and you have to understand that there's a lot of additional processing too. So now you've given me quite a challenge. :-) ~Hedge
My DX was about 6 feet away from me when I made this. But I do have all of the sounds on it. It’s basically factory stuff for the TX816: the brass performance, the choir, and the organ presets. During the song, they also use the bell and one of the whistle presets. I should break out the DX when I do the full-length partial reconstruction video. No idea when I’ll have time to do that, but I will. I already have the full mix anyway. :p
many many years ago, before software synthesizers I re-created this using my DX, TX 816, and an MKS 70. So I already know what all the sounds are. There were some mixing tricks I had to learn. Running stuff through bass amps and stuff like that. so the latest version has everything I learned since :-) what would really help the lead sound is some old, grainy, digital reverb. I'm pretty sure they had a Yamaha SBX on the returns for that. But I'll have to double check.
Love your work - Can you please reverse engineer Cappella "Move on Baby" when you get a chance - Classic Italo eurodance music. The lead sound is hard to emulate. If anyone can do it you can. Thank you in advance my man :) Link to the track: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YK2FEmIHFr0.html
I think I know how to make the lead sound for that. Part of it is synthesized, and another is synthesized and then sampled and pitch shifted. That's how I remember it. BTW there is a community post specifically dedicated to requests. I urge you and everyone else making requests to please post there! Otherwise, I will forget your requests. That's what happens when they are scattered under random videos. :-) ru-vid.comUgkxUp2o3iB3emUeNOExTMNBvaYn5OXAp5zE?si=gZLuuJl96CJ4Ksy3
Hello! Sorry, the dire straits presets for Synclavier that you uploaded to the community through DRIVE have the link down. If you can, I ask you to re-upload them. Thank you very much and excellent work!!
www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/gc8j79ozc5k6eoa9h8wkr/Synclavier-V.zip?rlkey=sbl62klp59wot30s9s95yri99&dl=0 I just checked the link and it works. Email me if you're having problems. In "About".
can you do the Final Countdown sound ? Ive been digging and its the 28 brass preset from a jx8p and a preset from a tx816 according to some interview, but couldnt find the producer Kevin Elson says about that, I tweak my jx8p but the layers dont sound quite like the original synth sound on the record, So why not ask a master of sound like you ? probably for you is too easy, but couldnt find any on the net to figure that out, on youtube, the sounds are so far away from sounding like that. Thanks for all you do !
