When I went to Urbana, it was such an adventure for me! I would be so excited when Daddy started loading up the car so we could go. I would eagerly do anything before the Urbana fair; it was everything to me. I would follow my cousin Kevin Liggins around, probably annoying him like a wet puppy. I was crazy about Uncle Jr. and Aunt Sis. Johnny Evans, Marks's dad, was so good-looking that I had a crush on him. I would run and hide whenever he visited Uncle Jr. in his uniform. Of course, Uncle Jr. would tease me and tell me I had a crush on my cousin.😋 My favorite candy store was Carmazzi's, it was so junkie, but I loved it! And Mumford's Potato Chips, OMGoodness, would melt in my mouth. I LOVED Urbana; it played such an intricate part in my childhood! This makes me so proud; I wish my mother and her sisters were alive to witness this amazing work! I'm proud of you, Mark Evans!!! So proud...
Herman was my neighbor, and more importantly, my friend. I am so lucky that I got to hear these stories and more. He had so many great stories and histories of Pensacola. Some of these stories I listened to more than once, because each time he told a little more, or went off in a different memory that was even more interesting! I never got tired of hearing them. I told him he could of held audiences with histories of Pensacola just like John Appleyard did. Lucky for me I got to hear them. Miss you Buddy. Thanks for posting this.
Have had the pleasure of meeting this remarkable woman and advocate 💙 She and another amazing woman, Heather Obara, showed me what modern advocacy should look like today. If you see this comment somehow ladies, then know I am so grateful for you guys and the way FSI taught me to advocate for this water I love and grew up with. And that education and documentation are so important to the plight of this water. I don't use social media anymore and stick to myself nowadays but I'm still picking up river trash and talking to local elementary kids about groundwater pollution.
Jason, when Sherrv Svekis and I learned that you were willing to join the January 2020 excavations, we were overjoyed; we needed your CV for the funders of the project. Modestly, you did not mention that you noticed the crab shell fragments that others had missed - a key component for reconstructing the subsistence of Angola. So grateful for your collaboration on the excavations and for moving the inspiring program forward
I grew up in Florida. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. It is so different now. At least I got to see old Florida before it went. The sad thing is , we’ll never get back to how it was- a wild , mysterious, virgin wilderness. You have no idea. I’d get out now if I could, before it’s all gone. Now , Im looking for an eternal home that comes into view, as old Florida fades away …
100 % as I read the Negro War by Anthony Dixon, I realized that women were never talked about. He referenced that because the Black Seminoles did not write much down that he had to use American, Spanish and British documents for the book. When reading the book often women are referred to as "Black Woman" or "Girl". Clearly the only way for a nation to develop would be if women were directly influential of that nation.
I'm guessing you're using the word "Afro" as in hair style or texture of hair, because as a "Generational X" born of the 1960s to the mid 70s Afro in our day had nothing to do with Africa it meant wearing our "Natural" hair style called the Fro! So if you were tryna slip in that Out Of Africa theory stuff, DON'T!
@@michaelm.c.hampton1157 Afro indigenous is a term us mixed natives use to describe our mixed heritage between both cultures 💯… u could’ve just looked it up before leaving weird comments 🤷🏽♂️
@@Grimey8lues3x since when? Since you've been alive? U Millennials are still learning what I already know. Being indigenous full blooded I had no idea what you "Mixed" ppl call yourselves, but Afro-indigenous is not documented anywhere before you all coined it. My comment wasn't weird you jus sayin something in your defense, Afro-indigenous yeah right. 🤦🏾♂

Rionholdt Boats in Mathews VA is the perfect blend of tradition and advancement, where the one doesn’t invalidate but rather substantiates the other. Both/and, not either/or!
A very good presentation by a man who is clearly well educated in his field. In my opinion, Dr. Gallagher overcomplicates Lee's motivations with his "layers of loyalty" approach. Lee himself said quite simply that his ultimate decision was determined by his unwillingness to raise a sword against his own people. Being Virginia aristocracy, Lee had an absolutely massive spiderweb of relatives and friends throughout Virginia. Who among us would be willing to wage war against our family, friends, and neighbors?
I would have, no doubt. Some of my direct ancestors in TN were slavers. Then I had other ancestors who were unionists. The honorable side of my family tree.

Cousin I remember the stories while lying on my mother’s breast. Mainly from the women. That we were never slaves and didn’t understand why they always repeated the narrative. Now I understand the importance and impact!
Net of immigration, census records show the slave population grew slightly faster than the free population between 1840-1850. This suggests that whites and blacks were living in roughly equal conditions, once outside of the big house. Slavery is a great evil, but the objective mortality evidence does not support the belief that the average white had it far better than the average slave.
