My mother had a Russian transistor radio in the ‘60s. I forget the brand name now, but they were quite common. Of course at this time the Second World War was within the memory of most people having ended only about twenty years previously. Russia having been on our side was not seen as an enemy. By the time I visited Russia in 1974 it was thought to be slightly unusual mainly by older people, but not very. The BBC were running a Russian language course at the time on the radio. In the late ‘50s or early ‘60s a Cinerama film ‘Cinerama’s Russian Adventure’ was made and released in the USA using scenes from Russian Kinopanorama films. In, I think, 1958 the Bolshoi Ballet performed in one of the big west end theatres in London, I forget which, and also at the Davis Theatre in Croydon. These performances were filmed, and a few years ago when I was working at the David Lean Cinema in Croydon, less than five minutes walk from the site of the Davis Theatre. After the show I made my way home from the bus stop directly outside the site of the Davis. East Germany was a bit of an oddity, it was controlled by Russia which had been on our side, but was part of Germany, which had quite recently been an enemy. I think many people old enough to remember the war still felt some hostility towards East Germany, but not Russia. The cold war was never really as big a thing in Europe as it was in the US.

S lenses as you say enabled priority shooting with some cameras and some of the lenses went through an update in coatings I believe... Optically many manual, and AF lenses remained the same for decades but coatings were updated at certain intervals.

The big possible issue faced when leaving the Canon reservation to add lenses to your RF system is physical interference between the rear of the lens and the internal structure of the body. Canon bodies from the beginning through the IV series don't have the problem. Canon installed light baffles inside the chamber between lens mount and film plane in the VI and later models, and they can present a problem of non-Canon lenses jamming into those structures when the lens is focused back to infinity. This can damage the lens, camera, or both. I'm not sure where the V series bodies stand in this transition. My solution was simple: Just buy Canon lenses, however this will not economically satisfy everyone. Soviet lenses seem to be the major problems here, and given their huge variances in quality and optical performance, I'd never risk buying one, even if cheap, unless I had time to test and return it for money refund if it disappointed.

I finally did it. I got the Nikkor 105 f2.5 AIS and adapted to my Canon R8. It is mint and I can't wait to shoot more stuff. I assume that because it is 'newer', I was able to find a perfect copy. I also like that built in hood that AIS and Contax zeiss lenses have. I think I paid around $220 for it. I'm a sucker :p

Some cold shoe light meters will let you relocate the position of the mount depending on your camera setup. Hopefully this one lets you move it to the rear so it doesn't interfere when you go to look in the viewfinder

If you really don't like the nikomat (also called the nikkormat) then just buy an F3. It does have a pocket on the back to stick a film speed card. I just sold my F3 and I am keeping my nikomat.

Excellent review. Even Canon fitted a Copal square shutter to their EF.
@namvet_13e
@namvet_13e 12 дней назад
I wonder if the wrinkled shutters might be due to someone installing a retractable lens which works fine on a leica III but which may touch the shutter curtain when retracted on a canon VI series?

Unfortunately your information may make the AI series get more expensive. 😕
@namvet_13e

The n8008 or F801 cameras can shoot shutter priority and so they can profit from an AIS lens.
@namvet_13e
@namvet_13e 13 дней назад
Correction: N8008 and N8008s (also F801 and F801s) do not support shutter priority on AIS lens, this feature requires a lens with a cpu. Hence, the AIS has no benefit on these cameras.

I've loved the results of this shot at EI 80-100 developed in Ilfotec HC (HC-110 type developer). You can also get this film quite inexpensively repackaged as AristaEDU Ultra 100.

Ok, the thing that drives me crazy about this camera is the film advance lever having to be out to fire the shutter. It constantly stabs my face if I’m looking through the finder, and because of this I find it the worst design of any camera I’ve ever used. Does this not bother anyone else?
@BriansPhotoShow

Indeed it does. That's actually a very common complaint about this series of cameras.

Glad I found your video, was a little confused at first. Incidentally, the PDF instructions on Foma website says the following regarding water temperature: Preparation of working solution In 600 ml water of 40 °C, the content of the bigger and then of the smaller bag is dissolved, for the processing of films and papers to be filled up with water to a final volume of 750 ml and 1 litre respectively.

The Copal Square isn't indestructible, as I found out recently. Bought a cheap and cheerful Cosina-based camera which gave one tired-sounding 'cronk' noise and the shutter died. Nothing brings it back. Slightly worried me as that's the first Copal Square that has died on me in many years, nearly all my cameras are CS based. Still, it was probably a cheaper one than the others, so that's possibly some explanation, and who knows how it was treated before I got it.

I have the Cosina Hi-Lite sitting in a drawer, that I only bought for the lens attached to it, about 15 years ago. Must get it out and give it some exercise with some of the M42s I have kicking around. They've only really been used via adaptors on digital bodies. The Hi-Lite feels like a nice enough camera, not cheap and nasty as so many budget ones later became. Relatedly, I also have the first Ricoh Singlex in its Nikon F-mount guise, another budget conscious effort that feels like a brick.

11:30, the release mechanism. Damn right. This happened to me with my Minolta Dynax 404si just a couple of weeks ago in the Pyrenees, after shooting about 24 frames. Luckily the outer frames on the spool "dimmed out" quickly enough to stop the same happening to what I'd already shot, so I only lost 4 photos on the reel, but it's a design fault that hasn't been rectified by any manufacturer in 30 years.

Does other Nikkor D lenses share this issue? I own a Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 D lens and now I'm thinking about buying this 35mm lens instead of simga and other, newer lenses, but i never heard of that kind of problem with any lens. Thank you for this video.

Canons first TLR, the Canonflex, had a botton trigger for winding and advancing film. Dropped in second edition. Some other cameras used the bottom trigger like mech during this time. One that i know of was the Ricoh 500.

Video @ 4:31 "Bulb - used in conjunction with flash bulbs" - Not True. Many years ago when they had very slow film emulsions, a rubber 'bulb' that pneumatically actuated with some distance, the shutter release (via a rubber 'bulb' that the photographer held & squeezed with his hand). This was utilized so the heavy camera mounted on a tripod didn't shake/vibrate while taking the picture...

Best avoid all Canon lenses from the 1950s or early 1960s with haze like the plague. It may be something to do with the chemicals in the grease used in them releasing gas, but the haze seems to etch the coatings thereby rendering them to junk status in my experience.

Of all the activities I enjoyed in my long life, Photography 📸 with an excellent quality 35mm SLR Camera has to top the list. In my youth, during the 1960's, 70's, 80's and 90's, I shot thousands of frames. For myself, family, friends, and (yes even Paying Customers!) the public. I've shot people, whales, wildlife and weddings. And there is still a THRILL when (by return post) I open up a package of prints, fresh from the Lab and share those captured images with my peers. You can keep your Digital zip boxes! Give me an old Nikon, Canon or Pextax! And I'll bring home the "MONEY SHOT" every time. GOD BLESS GENUINE PHOTOGRAPHY 📸

I like the humour and the review. I heard someone say this was a social media camera in that it works great for Instagram or something like that due to the half-frame. Since I am a social media Luddite, I wouldn't know. But I do know I love old cameras, and was lucky enough to find a 90+ year-old Zeiss Ikon folder whose bellows was still light tight, and with a little TLC works like when new. $35 on eBay. And a friend just found me a TLR Yashica Mat that is pristine and working great for $50 at a camera show. There is just something cool about these old cameras, but then again, since I am a relic, I like cameras that are relics too! Cheers!

It’s bigger advantage on many winders was to keep a tracking eye in the viewfinder with only having to worry about shutter press. Then remote trigger on a stand or it’s optional vertical grip shutter button.

I am a grumpy old man too and agree with 99.99% of what you said in your video. This Pentax is too expensive for what it is, which is a over glorified point and shoot camera. All the examples of cameras you gave are much better than the Pentax 17 and cheaper. I never liked half frame and never will. I think most people that will buy this camera want to buy a new film camera, and its a novelty. I liked very much how you explained why the Pentax 17 is not a good camera for serious photographers,
