Hop's # 9 is mostly kerosene I once read an article where a child drank a bottle and poison control told the parents let it pass it's just caressing and it's not toxic.
I’m here from the Delphi Forum Mike. Cool video, and nice work! I’ve got a 54 GWI as well…..same curved yoke handle and steel bevel handle as yours. Keep up the good work! Shawn
I was looking for this exact recipe with the lanolin as ive never heard of this lol. Hoppes smells so good and I use it to clean my guns, but Reds ed works a lot better in theory but also chemically as its the rawest form for what you need. Some variants ive found is lamp oil can easily substitute kerosene if your state has a ban on it, acetone I find is optional but you could probably add hoppes no9 instead of just pure acetone for universal firearm cleaning. But acetone itself is 100% optional. The beauty of this combo is that lanolin is super effective for rust protection and even slight lube. Ive heard even adding 10w-30 (or any motor oil) to this mix with some stp oil treatment, and BAM. You have some CLP :) at home.
Ed's Red is pretty much the same ingredients as Marvel Mystery Oil, so if you want to buy it pre-made in a better-smelling formulation, just buy Marvel Mystery Oil.
32 oz. of Hoppes would last me about a year. Thats cleaning four shotguns once a week, shooting a flat of shells between them. Thats roughly $2500 in ammo. Eight rounds of Skeet $40, or $2000 per annum. $20 in gas round trip to the range, thats $1000 in fuel costs. I don't count the cheese burgers at the range since we have to eat anyway. Forgot to tip the pullers, thats $500 there. Maybe one of the Mathematitions out there could help me with this. I just ordered a jar of Hoppes from Midway for $16 along with an $8 bag of cotton patches.
I like how easy it is and the result looks good. Smaller blade maybe and the shaping guard to protect the only two hands you have? I would also use a push stick for the long sides and a guide that rides along the front edge and supports the piece for the end cuts.
So glad I re-found this comment. I tried this. If you do, don't try it indoors. Ensure you're in well ventilated area. The FI Cleaner did clean the carbon really good though.
Four (4) gun oil manufactures didn't like this video. For me, I liked it cause Ed's Red is a great product that you can do it yourself and it actually works, unlike some gun cleaning solvents, which we all know are way over priced.
the acetone and terpentine (or mineral spirit) is the solvent, the transmission fluid and lanolin are the oil and the kerosene helps both, but would be no good on it's own because it's like a penetrating oil
I'm trying to find a different alternative to buying "Gun Solvents/lubes" and so I'm just wondering if it's just a solvent for punching down your rifle/pistol barrels and slides ect, cleaning out all the gunk, what do you use after to keep the bore safe from rust? Most people would run a patch down the bore like Break-Free CLP and call it good.. Engine oil is a lubricant, not a preventative/inhibitor so I would doubt that is what some one using? I see comments every know and then "All I use is mobile-1". Are they using engine oil in the bore to prevent the rust?
Well, I don't think it's good for long term storage, but if you shoot "regularly" I don't think it would be an issue. Transmission fluid is very fine oil as far as I can tell. I mostly use Ed's Red for cleaning and then usually spritz Ballistol down the barrel. I use Mobil-1 to lube my guns.
