I am a retired public and environmental health scientist and a kayak fishing enthusiast. I was born and raised in a small town in southwest Wisconsin. As a young person I spent much of my time during the summer months fishing for small mouth bass in the Fever River near my home town of Benton. My love of the outdoors and fishing led me to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where I pursued an education in fisheries management and aquatic ecology. I worked in the public and environmental health field for more than 42 years. In my retirement I have enjoyed spending time with my family camping, hiking and fishing.
We come to Wisconsin every year for hockey tournaments. I fill my trunk with spotted cow. Crossing state lines, but it's worth it!! Don't tell the Feds!!!
@@daleweaver2558 I actually did just that shortly after I made the video. I actually put a note in the video description section that mentioned that as well. It really does make a big difference. Thank you for your advice.
@@jroddy1 I actually tried that but it wasn’t very stable. The cup holder wouldn’t stay perpendicular. I’ll admit I tend to overkill a bit. Thanks for the advice though.
Hello George. Thank you for the video. I am getting supplies to modify my fishing kayak cart. Just one question: what is the length of the one and a half by 2-in boards?
@@LoveFishing51 It’s 16 inches long. I hope it works for you. I recently sold my Yukon Angler kayak and bought a Crescent Primo kayak. I’m 73 years old and the Yukon was getting a bit heavy to load in my truck by myself. The Crescent is only 55 pounds and it’s a foot shorter. It’s much more manageable and it’s an easier padding Kayak. Unfortunately, I had to modify my cart again to match the hull configuration of the Crescent. However, the cart is now working great and I made the changes.
@georgebowman3051 Thank you, George! I really appreciate it! And good for you... still hitting the water at 73! I hope I'm that lucky! Thanks again, champ!
You are welcome. I will probably cover the bunks on my cart with indoor/outdoor carpeting this year to add a bit of cushioning. Have a great year out on the water.
I've never seen your channel before, and see (at this time) you only have 284 subs. Dude, you put together a hell of a video. Super helpful, loved all the camera angles. Great audio and super informative. I'm surprised you don't have a larger following online. Thanks for all your upgrades, i'm gonna copy a few for my Yukon!
Thank you. It’s been fun playing with my Yukon. I really enjoy building things. My grandson was a wizard with his design and 3D printer and he’s helped me quite a bit. He’s off a the University of Wisconsin now so he’s no longer as active. Thanks again for your comments. Let me know if you have any questions.
Yes I have after gaining some experience. It didn’t take me long after I posted the video to get this feedback. I thought I posted a note to that effect in the video description and in response to an earlier viewer. Thanks for your comment. You are spot-on!
You are absolutely correct. I have made some adjustments in placement based on my personal experience. It’s not quite in the center close. Good observation on your part.
You are probably thinking about the Boonedox Groovy Landing Gear track kit. It attaches behind the kayak seat and then swings out of the way when on the water. You can find it on Amazon but it cost close to $350 USD.
Excellent instructional video! Very well done. I’m going to attempt to make a similar mount for my little pond prowler boat. This was super helpful. Thank you for taking the time to produce this and share.
What have I become? Am I truly that old? Am I really sitting here contemplating returning the mount I just got yesterday? Man I thought my 40s would be different lol
You’re not old! You just realize that you can invest in more important fishing gear than an overpriced mount. Like I said in my video, I’d rather spend my money on a nice 7 foot St. Croix bait casting rod. I’m 72 and I’ve always enjoyed making things and if I can save a buck along the way it’s even better.
Absolutely! You can get a surface mount track at most kayak or paddle sports shops locally. Amazon has a many. Yak gear and YakAttack have nice ones in various sizes to fit almost every kayak. Good luck!
Great video thank you But I was really hoping you would take it around the block So we could see if it was Is good for long Halls A dog sitting on it would have been perfect But enjoyed the video thank you
Thank you for your comments. I do have a field test video where my grandson and I took our kayaks about 1/4 mile on a rusted trail through woods and a grassy area. The carts performed very well fully loaded (minus the dog though). Check it out in my channel.
I did test it and does float. However, I recently switched to a higher lumen flash light and haven’t tested it yet. I will have to do a float test in my bath tub. I’ll let you know if it floats.
I've been picking up used Jogger strollers and bike trailers for free to $20, then converting them to Kayak carts for my yaks. They rock. It take an hour and they are free.
Outstanding idea! I may try that approach if I upgrade my kayak. I’ve been thinking about going with an Ascend 12 footer or a Bonafide this year. We’ll have to see if I can convince my wife that I need a new yak.
@@georgebowman3051 Our conversation inspired me to make some videos, including this one about the jogger stroller. I didn't know how to feed you the link, otherwise. Not trying to promote on your video, please feel free to delete after you grab the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9vNztyMFiMQ.html
Hi Patrick, Let me see what I can put together. I sort of followed some guidance I got from another RU-vid channel that had a 4 part series on the Striker plus 4. I’ll try to find the link. I used a through the hull transducer setup. I’m probably going to rig a scupper mount before spring. I had to reduce sensitivity on the Garmin because of the hull. It worked well but not perfect. I think the Striker was a great choice given my experience this last summer.
For the life of me, I couldn’t justify spending so much money on the commercial mounts. I think you will be happy with a diy mount. The Amazon shipping delay may actually be a blessing. Good luck.
