This is one of my favorite sequences in ST:TNG. The characters I usually like the least are the playboys like Riker, but Jonathan Frakes plays the character and his complexities so well--he's intelligent, resourceful, commanding, charming, and knows how to throw out the playbook and make a new one. This two-parter is Riker's story more than anyone else's and it's the best episode in the series.
Why did the Borg take Picard? They defeated the Federation ships because of their technological advantage. They didn't even care to retrieve him when he was taken back to Enterprise. All they did was give Data a chance to find a way to defeat them. Plus making a lifelong enemy of Picard himself. I guess it gave Sisko a reason to not like Picard for some reason, a dislike he got over fairly quickly btw.
They said the reason they were doing it was because they figured having someone as famous as Picard as their "Spokesperson" would make it more morale breaking and convince others to surrender nonviolently
1:34 I don’t know why, but seeing Worf and Data executing a critical part of the mission in a shuttle craft (instead of teleporting over there) excited me. I think it’s maybe because they’re both very capable combatants and seeing them do something with some complexity and danger was a thrill. Also the music at 1:44.
It's not really a shield to deflect energy, it seems to be a shield that is tuned to the phaser frequency so it essentially cancels the energy out. Think about sound waves and noise cancellation. It's doing the same thing. Presumably a regular personal shield wouldn't be feasible since it would require so much energy but a cancellation type shield wouldn't require nearly as much.
Less than 35 years later, we know that while Locutus was unconscious, a Borg virus tried to disrupt the Enterprises computer. We also know that the Borg Queen got Seven of Nine to create a means to assimilate others by rewriting their genetic code. And we know that Picard's DNA was rewritten in an area of his brain which was passed on to his son Jack. Imagine what could have happened if O'Brien's quick thinking with that transporter was successful, and the Borg destroyed Locutus, or maybe the Borg timed their attack on the shuttle craft after Data and Worf rescued Locutus just so no one on the Enterprise was the wiser - Locutus the Trojan Horse Virus?
The battle bridge set was much improved with the redesign for season 2 when it was used as the bridge of the decommissioned USS Hathaway in "Peak Performance" and redressed here for this episode with the NextGen era Okudagrams on the displays.
There's a bearded entity, beyond our power and comprehension, that takes a form in every possible universe. In Star Trek, it's Riker, and in Star Wars, it's Kyle Katarn. Wherever the bearded entity is, you'll know it when you see it, as it'll always be one of the baddest motherfuckers you'll see.
Lol they really sucked at combat scenes in this show. Starting at 2:56, the Borg slowly walk towards them without raising their weapons while they're being taken out one at a time. Just so silly lol
Go, plucked turkey! Go! I can remember how amazing it was to watch saucer separation for the first time. I'm glad they did it sparingly throughout TNG series. Though there were times I was like "come on! Do saucer separation!" during encounters as well lol. Now it's kinda cheesy but iconic
What i like is how this shows the difference between captain picard and riker as leaders... picard is an expert at diplomacy. Riker on the other hand is very cunning. When pushed his ideas are extremely detailed and in dept. Hes super focused.. sort of like janeway in a way
Given that one Borg cube managed to destroy almost 40 Federation starship at the battle of Wolf 359, a separated Enterprise D was fortunate to withstand this confrontation and then escape, only losing on shuttle craft. Great sequence 🎥👏🏾❤
Great sequence. Left me wondering why they didn't also transport a high yield explosive device onto that Borg ship (IE a "Nuke") and detonate that as a parting gift.
Worf was all, I got this, it is only Captain Picard, without accounting for the added strength from BORG enhancements, then after realizing he was outmatched, he called out to Data, for help.
That's bogus, Worf had already encountered the borg before and was well aware of their superior strength, he did the brave thing by charging Picard to try and restrain him until Data could help. He wasn't being stupid, he knew he had backup. If anything you should be impressed he was physically able to hold Picard off as long as he did.
@@WarGrowlmon18 no, totally different. Episode 1 season 3. 15 min into the episode Picard and Riker are talking about "hellbird" a computer virus aboard the enterprise d while he was Locutus...which is something they retconned... For no reason
