Shadow bands are difficult to capture on video, but your video did. Great spontaneous narration. How did you decide to go to Maine or do you happen to live there?
@JeremyVeldman
@JeremyVeldman 3 месяца назад
Thanks. The shadow bands were a complete surprise, but the snow blanket definitely helped. I was planning on seeing it in Arkansas or Cape Girardeau, but changed to Maine a few days earlier in lieu of a consistent reliable forecast. In hindsight, I would’ve stayed as the weather worked out in Arkansas. But, we had a spectacular view in Island Falls, Maine and perfect skies… there is something to be said about setting! Thanks for watching.

@@JeremyVeldman I went to Lakeside State Park on Lake Ontario 40 miles west of Rochester, NY hoping to “get behind” the forecasted “warm front” before totality. The weather the day before and the early morning of eclipse day was clear. Unfortunately I gambled wrong, but I had an otherwise amazing eclipse experience by actually recording the shadow of the Moon moving across Lake Ontario. That made my eclipse experience completely unexpected but extraordinary. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xDmQNVaJy3E.htmlsi=sUV242JuxWjClJ6n

Your video was well done. I traveled 75 miles from Cincinnati to Shelbyville, Indiana. I was in totality for just over 4 minutes. Clear skies. The most amazing natural sight and experience I ever saw in my life.

I filmed it with a GoPro and a phone side by side and the GoPro took the objectively better video. I also made it so it wouldn’t auto-balance the brightness to show how dark it really got. it was cloudy in Syracuse but the disk peeked through for a little bit and it was otherworldly. Seeing the shadow roll over the clouds was really eerie, I have the time lapse on my channel.

Yeah, nasa put out a paper that due the size of the lenses and sensors your phones are safe without these things. Your phones will not get damaged by the eclipse. The science backs it. So many people buying these things for nothing

Star parties are so hit-or-miss depending on the weather. I was there in 2021, great weather, but views dimmed a bit by wildfire smoke. I think I might head back this year. 2022 I went to Almost Heaven, great when there wasn't fog (which was much of the time), 2023 I tried Nebraska, weather was uncooperative mostly, I left early, apparently missed the best night.

I'm not a iPhone guy so can my solar glasses work if I hold it over it? I'm counting on that but am also looking for advice
@JeremyVeldman
@JeremyVeldman 4 месяца назад
It might work as long as you don't let any stray light in. The key is the app on the phone, which allows you to adjust the brightness and contrast of the solar disc. That's the real key to the success of this application.

They must be correcting the colour of the sun using the software, because the filter makes the sun BLUE. What you see in the video isn't what you see in the field, because the sun washes out the screen. You'll have to guess at where you are aiming, unless you have an umbrella or a piece of cardboard to give shade. It only works correctly on the eye phone; it has problems running on Android, and the devs won't bother with it until July 2024.

Pro tip for star parties. Use 6" to 8" lag bolts to secure ground cloths. I carry a cordless drill/driver and a socket to put them in and remove them.

I arrived Saturday morning. I ended up leaving Monday morning with all of the Saturday and Sunday high winds and rain. My canopy got crippled. I was able to do some solar observing Sunday afternoon thought. I was there in 2018 for the miserable cold, foggy and rainy weather. I came back in 2021 which was fantastic.

🌞1999 I survived the total eclipse outdoor in Bavaria, Germany. 🌑It rained a lot until it got dark, then the rain stopped, complete silence, no birds nor dogs... 🌧There was a "☯" in the epicenter in the nimbostratus above, ~2km S of me. ☔Rain continued with the returning light. 🛗Also interesting was a weak "elevator-effect" in the legs, that You feel, when an elevator stops up- or downwards.

Depending on your location, up to 4.5 minutes. The closer you are to the center line, the longer the duration of annularity. Check out the eclipse simulator at eclipse2024.org/

You need a tripod, or something to lean on so minimize the shaking, and something dark to shade the screen. Use both hands so the application doesn't close, which means you get to start over.

Dumb question: Do I face EAST to see annular eclipse? I will be in Depot Bay Oregon.
@JeremyVeldman
@JeremyVeldman 11 месяцев назад
Not a dumb question at all. Yes, due East - it will be a morning eclipse. First contact for you begins around 8:05am, full annularity will be around 9:16am. Look east/south east. The sun will be low in the sky- about 15 deg above the horizon. The key for you will be cloud cover, I've spent some time on the Oregon Coast (Yachats is my favorite spot) and clouds are pretty frequent there. Also, looking due East, you may have coastline and trees obstructing the horizon. Thank you for your question, clear skies on October 14.
