Aren’t you supposed to treat them for worms and parasites twice a year?

I have quite a few large grow out pens, but even still, if I feel a group of grow outs are stressed socially, I do a cull, perhaps a little earlier than what I had planed. But if you know your birds, you have an idea, and just pulling out two birds or a nasty mean bird can make a big difference.

One of the top bantam breeders in my neighbourhood does do an early hatch and a late hatch to speed things up. But Mandy, you are making progress, so it is OK to stick with your program.

It's kinda funny, I started with a fairly fast maturing group of Partridge Chanteclers, and I did get a 3 time show champion cockerel out of that line. But as a cock bird, he is too small. Most of that line are just under the size requirement of the SOP. I was lucky enough to get another line, a slow growing line, and while they are not too impressive at an early age, they mature to an impressive bird. I can't expect to show late hatched birds from that slow growing line, but I had a 2 time winner as a cock from that slow maturing line. Now I have a cockerel who was reserve of breed at a competitive show, that is a cross between the two lines. Interesting that this cross between the fast and slow growing lines was so slow maturing I almost sold him. I am glad I did not sell him and waited on him to fill out.

Poultry Judges are "judging" according to the standard, but the reality is even judges can have different interpretations, and that is only human. It is an art, not quantitative hard science. That is why there are very successful breeders of a give breed and variety, that have slightly different styles of the same breed. We also need to bare in mind, that some breeds or varieties are still evolving and judges know this. I would say being a judge is a hard job.

I use my eye, poor growers get culled. I have a number of lines, each with their own growth rate. My slowest growing birds grow into my largest. So I only compare birds within their own line.

I would just caution people about not feeding enough. Yes try not to waste, but do not get carried away about feeding too much or not enough. I know of two chicken keepers that are obsessed with not wasting feed and cost. Their birds show this, they are skinny, boney birds for dual purpose breeds, poor feather quality etc. There is a balance here and it depends on the breed you have, their stage in life and so forth. Common sense people!

My main line, they are nice birds, quality but too small. I was not getting anywhere with the size situation, so I outcrossed to 3 females from a line with good size. I am not regretting the outcross. I did have to cull lots but ended up with some nice birds with size and 2nd gen looks good. No regrets.

Jeff is right. When I was a kid, I bought scratch from the local mill and it was mostly dust. I pay good money for clean scratch and it is worth it!!

Also diet, if most all of your birds are doing well on your feed program, don't think that the one sickly bird will get revived with snake oil!

It's a funny thing, I am into my third year with Partridge Chanteclers, and I am less happy with my birds. They have improved a lot, but the more familiar, the more I learn about what a good Partridge Chantecler should look and be like, I realize how much more work I have to do. I have had many winners at the shows, but even my winners could stand improvement. I guess as you learn more, you get more into the fine details, which is good.
