Great video. Thank you. Any site or way to tell if a mussel from North Texas is safe to eat? Sounds like a really stupid question since your saying they are endangered and I won't if you say because they are not endangered don't eat them. But at the small lake we fish there seem be tons! Thanks for your presence and help.
Glad you like the video! For North Texas mussel info I'd suggest contacting the Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute nri@tamu.edu The freshwater mussels we're talking about are in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
If the climate didn't change, all life would cease to exist. You can't do anything about it anyway, so why worry? You just need to make sure you're wearing the right clothes for the day.
According to the big Google, Spring Peepers lay up to 25,000 eggs each time! I literally have had frogs for years and years and I have never heard of these types of frogs until now....the only reason I'm researching them now is because I found one out back here at my house and it's tiny. I thought it was a baby bullfrog but it was in a small tree and I know bullfrogs don't climb like tree frogs do and this lil dude is ORANGE....so he immediately got my attention so I got him and brought him in and decided to do a lil bit a research cause I like to learn lol.... I've had tree frogs my entire life....I have a pool out behind my house that just for my lil tree frogs so they can have somewhere to gather around the end of April early May to start calling their females and having their babies....I will raise the tadpoles into lil froglets and do my best to keep things such as snake feeders from eating them before they come out of the water and start flying....I absolutely love these lil frogs...has anyone ever seen a puggy froglet? I know it sounds crazy but it's a real thing....I think it's some kinda deformity or something because for some reason these lil guys NEVER live to make it to adulthood from my experience but they are flat faced just like pug pup or like a Persian cat.... they're the most adorable things I have ever seen in my life lol....but Im going to be 43 in a couple of weeks and I can't believe that this is the first Spring Peeper I have ever seen or even heard of especially having frogs my entire life lol that's crazy to me lol! Anyways thanks for the info!
Scott, the narrator did an excellent job. this explanation power of American narrators is unmatched in the world where people struggle to explain to lot of audience at once.
Louisiana has the world's largest blue-crab fishery, not Chesapeake Bay. Please change your video to reflect this fact. In fact, if you’re eating a blue crab in Chesapeake Bay, it may actually be from the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana. Also, we cook our crabs better because we boil them with all kinds of seasonings and things that make them juicy and tastier as opposed to sprinkling them with some Old Bay spices and then baking them in the oven. ofthem. They are really much better our way. If you come to New Orleans during jazz fest, you can try a deep fried softshell crab , they are delicious Also, we cook better than they do north Louisiana. We boil crabs with all kind of good seasonings and other things we don’t just sprinkles dry seasonings on top. If you come to New Orleans during jazz fest, you can get a fried, softshell crab, Poboy.
In terms of state fisheries, Louisiana's in the largest blue-crab fishery. However, the Chesapeake comprises both Maryland and Virginia, and combined the Bay's fishery is larger. As for where the crabs might be from, it is hard to say. Our crabs mate in the Bay and the females spawn in the lower, saltier end of the Bay. The tiny larvae are then pulled out into coastal waters, making their way back into the Bay as they grow. Whether Louisiana larvae end up being moved by the winds and tides up into the Bay is hard to say. As for cooking, I'd venture to say most Marylanders boil their crabs and yes, we do enjoy our Old Bay! It's wonderful how many different ways there are to enjoy this wonderful crustacean!
Background music is supposed to be just that...in the background. But, in this case, the human was the background. You have to listen hard to even hear her. I sure wish the music was significantly quieter.
The kits used in that video are LaMotte Low Cost Water Monitoring Kits: lamotte.com/products/environmental-science-education/partnership-programs/earth-force-reg/earth-forcer-low-cost-water-monitoring-kit-3-5886 The chemicals used are non-hazardous and can be flushed down the sink with running water.

Thanks for the question. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I touched base with our scientist and he said it would be best to check with an expert from your local wildlife division before moving or disrupting mussel populations.
Yup, my suburban home in eastern Mass has a few watery areas (vernal pools) and you can hear them so loudly at night. Amazing. Never seen one, but you can easily hear them.
Check on the walls of your house around a Light! They eat the isects that land near them. They also hide in the spaces between vinyl siding where the joint moldings meet! Good Luck! You will see some!
Your favorite oyster knife is call a Boston style(my preferred OK as well) but I also favor the Chesapeake stabber as well…just trying to refresh my memory…the little table is a novel idea, havnt seen that before… great vid bro… I do use the OK to flick away shell debris …I also have seen a shucker flip the oyster when finished in the cup(it gives it a fuller presence in the shell), looked good and I’ll be giving that a try….TY4Posting
Oysters filter pollutants by consuming them or shaping them into small packets, which are deposited on the bottom of the bay where they are not harmful.
Here's the times for each of the chapters. I was given this video for a class assignment, so I marked these to refer back to. 0:00 Prologue 0:40 Introduction 1:06 "Blossom Where You're Planted" (oyster reproduction) 2:35 "Rise from the Muck" (environmental factors) 3:54 "Build It and They Will Come" (other species on the reef) 5:54 "Filtering Factories" (algae and filter feeders) 8:00 "Too Much of a Good Thing" (human effects) 9:32 Closing Message
