So just did my girlfriends which was a 2011 clubman and same issue, except hers didn’t fix with cleaning the connection. Since the assembly seemed like one piece and I couldn’t see the connections on the inside I just decided to cut into it with a all purpose multi tool. Figured the only other option was to get a new assembly anyway for $200 so not much to lose. Carefully cut around the edges and not into the reflective portions. Able to pop it off and inside I was able to find that one of the connections had broken off, had to bend it and wedge it under another metal piece for it to stay put and have a good connection. Put it all back together and it totally works. There are three metal pins that carefully need to be aligned as well when popping the backing back on. Be sure they’re in line otherwise they can bend and then again you have a loose connection. But all back together now and works well.
