It’s kind of weird that the bleachers were empty in all those highlights. I’m a proud Texan, but that’s embarrassing. You wouldn’t see that in Ohio with Massillon vs Canton McKinley. Where’s the pride out there? Even Abilene High vs Cooper has overflowing crowds. I don’t get it
@@hectormoto5044 so that means you can’t go watch your local team? What else you have going on out in Odessa badlands? That was always the reason why the locals came to games. Embarrassing to my state.
@@bradtaylor4765 I just don't believe that the school should of been separated into three high schools. Dallas area schools have more political pull with UIL and don't do this like Allen and duncanville, thus why they have been winning or in the hunt for titles the last 10 years. Permian and Midland have not done anything in a while. The locals are not showing up. I guess they are doing other things.
@@hectormoto5044 there’s talent in the DFW area, but little in Odessa/Midland. Take out Benson and Roy Williams and you’ve produced almost nothing. Still ya go t9 the games for the kids
One guy went against what the city voted for. We voted to call it Lee and drop Robert e. He completely changed it. So Theres no real feeling for the school anymore. It has no tradition.
@@TSJ99 I know which is why I said it was a stupid show. Those of us who lived in those times knew how off of reality the damn movie was and I am chilled, initial boy
I totally agree, the woke censorship bullshit has gotten out of hand. Funny how no one had any issues with the original name until a few years ago. The same goes for a road here in Houston, TX named Unison (formerly known as Robert E Lee).
Growing up I used to think of Texans as tough, proud Americans then I see they spit out sniveling cowards like Ted “ I’d sell out my own family” Cruz, Abbott, Paxton and realize just how wrong I was. It’s a state full of weak pathetic people like them on one side and good wholesome people on the other.
Massillon-Washington vs. Canton McKinley is the best rivalry in HS football. For years it was the only high school game in America where you were able to place a bet in Vegas.
Yeah they leave out the parts how back in the day the powers that be redrew lines where "certain kids" from certain particular feeder schools from the elementary's and Jr highs got funneled into Permian but I digress ask Boobie Miles hahaha
According to Boobie Miles and a few other sources, Permian High Schools was one the LAST schools in the entire country to integrate. And they only did it because of football, they wanted the athletes. If they didn't desegregate the schools, then Odessa High would have won all those championships Permian won in the 80s and 90s. They watched the black and brown kids (including Boobie) play in the peewees and forced them to play for Permian when they got older.
That quarter final game in Lubbock in 1983 against Odessa Permian was a wild one but, we beat Permian again that year and would end up losing to San Antonio Converse Judson Rockets in the state championship at the old Texas stadium 25-21 another very close game down to the wire. Midland Lee Rebels head Coach Spike Dykes 🙏 brilliant coach. Jimbo, former US Navy radioman petty officer 86-96. Class of 84'.
How exactly does the school district work in Odessa? Is there a dividing line in the city? Is it open enrollment and every just goes to Permian because of the tradition?
Yes a line that splits the town into east and west. East (more upscale, still developing) is zoned to Permian; West (old side of town) is zoned to Odessa High
If more talented players and top-notch coaches come along, then it's definitely possible. Take Duncanville for instance, they had a 24 year-long dry spell until they won their 2nd state title against North Shore last December. Needless to say, the previous 3 championship games that they faced each other in were straight-up dog fights.
@@elhaynie1 As I recall, Midland Lee whooped the shit out of Aldine Eisenhower in a championship game back in '99. The only things that they and their old rival Odessa Permian need, are better coaching and fresh talent on the field. Those are the only 2 noteworthy teams to come out of West Texas in my opinion. I really can't say the same for teams from the El Paso, Amarillo, Abilene, San Angelo or Lubbock areas though.
@@elhaynie1 I firmly disagree. Look at Canadian/Gunter "rivalry" now. West Texas and Panhandle schools still have talent. What they lack is coaching that aren't set in their ways and able to adapt to the talent that they do have. Can't always run the spread, and can't always run the veer. Need to create packages specific for the talent you do have that will set you apart and be different.
