It doesn't matter if it's sunny and warm or freezing and snowing, you too can ride year round. If you like plus bikes (especially 29+), fat bikes, and going for adventure rides then this channel is definitely for you.
Love your work on this channel! I got an LWB last year and love it. Now, weirdly, I'm considering an SWB. I'd like to build one up as a single speed. I can't wait to see your review on the SWB with 29x....did you say 2.6s? It would be equally as cool if you checked it out in S.S. mode.🚴♀
I just had to adjust my QR "Boost 141" hub today. Cone and cup loose balls in soft alloy Formula hubs. It's so gritty, and just about not fixable. Apparently, Trek still uses Boost 141, NOBODY makes hubs/wheels for them. SMH.
Beautiful roads to ride! A well-done video for a product that deserves such. I have its brother on my Moots YBB 650, convert to graveler and agree with all you say. 👍
Hi Guys, I just switched to this bar size 46. For me the best decision what I made. I am 6.4 tall however not with a big ✋ and I can reach easily the levers. I am using GRX set. Also I have sub brakes as well. Hope it helps you.
I recently put a Salsa Blackthorn together and built it up with 29 x 2.6, 27.5 x 2.8, and a full 27.5 x 3.0. Unfortunately, a 3.25 tire isn't going to fit without hitting my chain. The 27.5 x 3.0 is hands down my favorite wheel tire combo. 27.5 x 3.0 options are just about gone. I just hoarded a bunch of Specialized Ground Control T7s on closeout. A 29 x 3.25 might be fun to try out on one of my Salsa Bucksaws. That bike is surprisingly nimble with carbon wheels and a set of 26x4.0 Jumbo Jim LiteSkin Evo tires. It sucks the bike industry has basically decided to kill plus tires and bikes. Every bike doesn't need to be 23 pound XC bike on 2.2 inch tires. Plus size is fun size!
I really meant the effective top tube (distance sitting), not the reach (distance standing). It’s been a long time since I rode this, but it just felt shorter than I was expecting. It wasn’t too short though and it’ll fit you great.
assuming that the front center is a bit too short - then it might help if the chain stays were longer - but it will definitely be dangerous - as soon as your front wheel starts to slip and turns sideways - you will fly over the handlebars - if it comes to the slightest incline - the weight is distributed 50/50 - and as soon as you hit the brake - things turn out very bad
if you want to have a stable ride feeling - i would highly recommend to elongate the front center - only cargo bikes have enough - to not flip over under full breaking
I know you can still get the Duroc in their 40 and 50mm rims. I think the RaceFace Arc is also an option, but yeah things are definitely more limited now.
@@RideYearRound thanks. Wasn’t aware of those options. I never want to get rid of my 27.5+. I want a higher engagement hub and I’m not sure whether to replace the sram one on my WTB i40 wheels or just get a new wheel set built.
I regularly go for long rides, about 4 times a week, 3 to 5 hours each ride, and this is the bar I have and it’s so good, and comfortable… love it and it was one of the best upgrades on my gravel bike
Am I the only one around here who does *not* like these bars? 😊 Had them on my bike and found the position of the bumps on the lowers too far back. Comfy on its own, yes, however I could not reach the brake levers from this hand position, and my hands are not small (glove size 10)😮. Once you grip brake friendly on the lowers, the bump is *very* annoying 😢 Happily replaced by Deda Géra (alloy) which suits me better than anything else 😊
I am excited to hear your long term review of the Jones SWB. I'm eyeing a replacing my oldest bike. While the SWB isn't top of my list it's still on the short list because I /love/ riding my LWB so much it's ridiculous. (and few people believe me how fun it is to ride in spite of its size and lack of suspension)
Interesting your take on chainstay length. Steve (hardtailparty) loves short chainstays. I have the SC Chameleon and hated it in the 415mm, but then again I'm 5'10 and ride a medium. 430mm is much better and I could go longer.
I think it's totally dependent on the terrain you're riding AND your riding style. I'm not a super "playful" rider so short chainstays don't really benefit me. Some of that may be that I ride a lot of fat bikes which can't go super short to begin with, but I don't know...my opinion really changed after getting the LWB. It's going to depend on the person though.
I'm not sure if there's anything done butting or tubing wise to add compliance (although longer chainstays help with that a bit), but titanium is a good choice for this type of bike in general.
People will cream themselves over a bike like this, just because of all the mounting points. Glad it clears 29+ tyres (every bike should!) So when are you hitting up Surly to send you the new Moonlander to review? lol 😃
Yeah I think 95% of people will never take full advantage of all of these mounting points, but for the 5% that do it's an awesome feature. Also, I've reached out but no response from Surly. I'd love to try it out though.
Lovely review! I've been considering either the VentureMax or the Kitchen Sink myself for a little while now. Do you feel like there's particular differences between the two? VentureMax looks like it's juuust a bit more comfy, which is probably my main goal, but iirc the Kitchen Sink is a little less 'aggressive' in the flare and all that too? I ride a Diverge and mostly use it for gravel group riding and just long solo adventures, nice mix of road and towpath and singletrack around where I am. Nothing racey and I'm usually just chilling on the hoods and cruising, but definitely some chunky stuff here and there too.
Honestly either one would be great for your use case. The VentureMax feels more like what I’d want for group rides and true “gravel” riding, but is still more than capable for what you’re describing too. If you want a little more stack and a nice place for a bag, the Redshift is probably the better option.
Wow. So I just subscribed and I hardly ever do that! My story: first was like 1990 rigid Diamond Back Ascent. Loved it, here in Nor Cal so many options! can't say I was a "mountain biker" but I did my more than fair share! Can you call that a mountain bike? Not by today's standards. Had for a few years, my brother stole it when he was off to college at Tempe. Yep, Az. So I didn't get to further my biking experience due to startingsrried life, business, family, etc. we got two K2's for city cruising with the carriage for the kids. Had those for years, man we loved those K2's. Then my wife got my daughter at 12 a Fuji straight bar hybrid. I was like wow!! Sexy white half road half something! Then I was able to ride if most of all of them because we literally road them to hell & back! Just before COVID I picked up on eBay a Jamis DXT. Love it still to this day, even with the three front rings!! So I got the itch again. Been a roadie for quite some time, never saw myself getting into another MTN bike because everything I saw was FS. Not that that's bad. Just not for me aesthetic wise & weight. So an old hs buddie started up. He treated himself a few months ago with a firebird. Like Wow! He's been nagging me. He's Chief engineer of Cal trans bridge and freeways and knows so many cool places. So I caved, but it wasn't easy. It took me nearly a month to find my sweet spot for a "MTN". Turns out I settled in searching for a lightly used Roscoe 9. Yep, I know it's trek but it's built like a tank and yet isn't super heavy like the previous 6,7 & 8's. Bart was like Yeah Mike, a freakin' hard tail! Man those were beasts! I test road one. Wow! I'm truly happy and stoked with this Trek R9. I'm learning again how to enjoy life on a bike again! Thanks so much for the vlog, I was starting to think something was wrong with me getting a trail hard tail.
From what I’ve ridden, the Wren Perseverance and surprisingly the Redshift Kitchen Sink (I think mostly due to the 20mm of rise). With the Wren I think it’s mostly from the width so the XL version honestly might make this bar a lot better in technical stuff.
I've been fatbike 'curious' for about 4 years and just bought a pre-owned DeVinci Minus 10S and LOVE riding it! It's so much fun... in part it's the simplicity and a 'monster' bike (ala monster truck lol). This is bike #5 ... ride enough years and, well bikes follow you home (dual sus, hard tail, gravel, road, flat bar) This new to me fatbike is parked at my front door ... ready to roll
Thanks for the review. The Venturemax looks sharp on your Cutthroat with the red PNW bar tape. I’ve enjoyed riding with a WCS Venturemax XL 52 cm on my atb, Ritchey Ascent. Mostly unpaved riding, forest roads, double track, some singletrack. Have a PNW Coast suspension dropper post, and mullet 1x12 SRAM drivetrain. One of my favorite bikes to ride!
You cant really go wrong with these bars. That being said I rode a race with the Beacon bars and they were great!!! Strangely enough I like the Beacon model slightly better. For curiosity I bought the Corralitos too, but have yet to install… I would love you to review the Whiskey Winston handlebars. Those are on two of my bikes and are fantastic. Like your Jones H bar review they have to be set up correctly.
Thanks for reviewing this bar. Learning a lot about Ritchey products (and their naming system), this helps. WCS line seems to be the sweet spot of spending but not overspending, and Comp the sweet spot of spending enough to get something good (better than basic) that will last.
