Random entertainment, brought to you by an idiot. Metal fabrication, automotive shenanigans, offroading, DIY, and who knows what else, ill try just about any project!
You jogged my memory. The machine had metal plates with a notch in the middle that fit where you put that U bolt. Sorry it’s been like 30 years since I’ve used that model.
You need another set of hands on the other side of the tire to hold it up in the drop center. When I started working in my dad's shop in 1985, the 4040 is all we had then. Everything was generally 14 and 15 inch wheels. Occasionally a Corvette or something would come in with 16 inch wheels and we would have to put shims in the bottom bead breaker. And those plastic covers for the tool would either never stay on, or the wheel edge would cut right thru it. Don't ask how often we scratched nice wheels up. That's probably why the turntable style tire machines made the 4040 pretty much obsolete. But for standard steel wheels, nothing is faster or works better in my opinion.
Nice truck & turbo setup! Waiting for Part 2. I anticipate ya'll will resolve the basic issues (instal high quality Standard Motor procucts distributoe cap & rotor with real brass terminals & the spark plug wires ya'll already have, plus new spark plugs.) The wideband O2 sensor & AFR gauge is a serious tuning tool that I was glad to see ya'll install ! That was why I watched to the end. Hopefully Part 2 will wrap it all up, & deliver, from that great old truck & engine, the boosted performance the owner deserves! Eagerly waiting!
I grew up in a very rural area of Washington state and my grandma had a red 55 International Harvester that grandpa had bought bran new. Well, actually that's not quite true. His friend bought the International while, at the same time, grandpa bought a 55 Chevy pickup. As it turned out, his friend hated the International and grandpa hated the Chevy, so they traded straight across. Interestingly, the Chevy died a short time later and the International was indestructible. Grandpa died in 66 but we still had the International. It seems like I grew up in that truck. We hauled our firewood, hay, equipment, water, and anything else we needed in that old girl. In 1977, when I was 14, my grandma's health was deteriorating. She called me in and told me that I had first choice of anything she had. I told her I wanted the International. I thought my step grandpa was going to have a heart attack as, by that time, the old truck was his work rig. But I got the old girl. Unfortunately, I let my step grandpa talked me into selling the truck to him. After I joined the military, he sold off the truck and I didn't know where it ended up. Such a shame, I loved that truck.
Ahh..so that's why old trucks had tall hoods. The designers knew someone was gonna slap a draw-through carb and turbo on'em, someday:) Might want to change the plugs. It's rare, but I've seen a few plugs leak juice into the block, through a broken ceramic, but sort-of keep working.
My dad had one of those. He bought it from an old lady in the summer of 1970 so it was 15 years old and I was 8. It had been garage kept for its whole 15 years and never driven all that much. Back then old people didn't drive if they didn't actually need to. She lived near the center of town and there were neighborhood grocery stores in town within walking distance of everyone. To make a long story short, the car was practically in new condition, inside and out. I think it was light blue, light green, or aqua (been a long time). Right after he bought it he and I took it to the city park to wash and wax it. All that chrome really shined when we were done. He kept it for maybe 1½ year. I can tell you that it was hard to find totally rust free 15 year old cars back then before undercoating was a thing and they used salt on the roads in the winter. I remember we'd go for long Saturday and Sunday afternoon drives in the country as a family and get compliments on that car's like new condition. I don't remember which engine or tranny it had, or any other features. "Chips-ahoy Savoy" I like that!
Awesome to hear the old story! This one will probably keep the patina look but fix the massive rust holes. Brandi isnt excited about Chips ahoy Savoy for the name. But shr has taken a liking to Chip for short.
SWEEEEEET Sportabout! I have one, too! Not quite as clean, mind you. Is that original or restored? Love it! What cams/lifter did you have and have now? I also have a Concord wagon, a Matador coupe, Ambassadors, etc. Of course they're all projects with only one Ambassador running/driving right now... Good luck with it! I'll keep on watchin'!!!
Body is all original other than a rocker repair. Original paint and most of interior is original. As fas as the cam specs, ill let my dad respond. He has all those details
From dad “We call her a fixed up survivor. The seats have been re upholstered the rest of the interior is original. Fixed the traditional rust in the rocker panels and dings below the pinstripe. Paint is original from the pinstripe up. Comp Cams we literally went from the bottom of the page to the top of the page hydraulic roller old 10-602-11 new 10-801-11 much tamer and more drivable now.”
If you don't follow the breakin instructions on the cam and lifters, you will ruin it.... Most important is To keep the RPM over 2000 for the first 20 minutes.
Did you ever get this EGT issue resolved? From what I understand the tune should be automatically adjusting fuel for elevation using the MAP sensor. If you look at the MAP sensor readings at idle it should be telling you you are well into "negative" boost at higher elevations, and thus the PCM/tune should be dumping less fuel to compensate. Check your MAP sensor readings. Verify you are generating good boost, this same exact turbo on my 7.3 gets up to around 35psi of boost at WOT. Double check for exhaust/boost leaks. After all of that I would start wondering if maybe you have some injectors going bad and they are dumping too much fuel.
Truck doesnt get driven much. But i think there is still something going on with it. No boost leaks. I did a leak down test on it. I want to test the HPOP. As far as i know its the original one. Havent found any exhaust leaks. I did work with jellybuilt tuning. They sent me tunes with less fuel. That helped, but now the truck dont have much power.
Found a fuel leak. Got that repaired. But didnt resolve egt issues. Looked for exhaust leaks. Cant find any. Did a boost leak down test after i installed turbo. Got all those leaks repaired. Guess i could do another boost leak test.
