By day I'm a professional boom operator working in the motion picture industry any other time, I'm a sound geek with a passion for teaching my craft. There are many aspects of sound that aren't taught anywhere online because many professional tricks are kept hush hush amongst pros. This is where this channel is unique. Anyone can have an opinion as to what sounds good but you many not know why or how to get the best possible sound for your movies, videos, podcasts or narration. Many people charge for the information I'm providing here for free so put on your listening ears - Sound Speeds!

After Years with cracking sounds when an app was on peak cpu usage, now i got rid of it. disabled 4 audio devices and i can enjoy my music again in every moment.
The issue seems to stop every time I disable my device and restart the pc, but then it starts again, so I have to do this every time I turn on my pc 😥Help?
@@SoundSpeeds well i dont know what causes it, but every time i disable/uninstall my headset device, and it asks me to restart pc, the issue goes away. Allthough every time i turn on my pc and connect the headset the issue comes back. And it seems like if i reconnect my headset more times while my pc is on the crackling sounds gets worse and worse
I'm not a computer tech so I'm not sure but if it were me, I'd see if the driver is disabling when you unplug the headset. If so, see if you can make the driver always active and never disable. Outside of that, I'm not sure.
You said sound is the only department that has specific job titles, Camera is the same way, even with how you are classified in 600. There's different initiations and dues per classification unlike other locals. So sound isn't the only department with specific roles.
Hi I watched your video and it's very interesting. Thank you I just changed the desktop computer of the studio with a similar one always HP, but obviously new and faster. both were i5 with 16 GB, the previous Windows 10 I used Reaper to record but with Asio4all otherwise it didn't work. now with Windows 11 and this new computer I have a lot of creaking. I downloaded Asio4all but nothing to do.. with the various settings it gives me Every now and then a creaking. then if I open for example Google Chrome or anything else while I'm recording everything freezes it makes a lot of creaking and the recording just skips. I've done everything and more in terms of adjustments thanks to the various tutorials found on RU-vid. I don't know what to do anymore do you have any suggestions?
Had a moderately humorous comment teed up, but dang, this topic ain't funny. Even in construction, if a job couldn't get a union shop to do the work, the project needed to pay prevailing wage to the tradesmen regardless. (in some states, it didn't work that way, but, good luck living in those buildings.)
1st off, love your videos, we have learned so much going through them, but I do have a question when it comes to bidding on projects for Kit Rates. So I've invested into a medium sized location sound kit in an attempt to get a friend of mine into a career in location sound. The kit includes x5 Sound Devices A20 minis, Cos-11ds, and x1 A20TX for a wireless boom, Nexus, bag, timecode slate, tentacle syncs, 35 Comteks, etc, the only thing we are missing is a cart, some external antennas, and some cam syncs (I think). We are trying to figure out how to calculate a kit rate for shows. Do you offer a discount for longer shows or is it the same rate every day? Any advice would be awesome cause I would love to keep investing into the kit but there is so little information out there on how to calculate a kit rate that is not too expensive but also affordable for productions that falls in line competitively.
You might ask this in some Sound mixer forums to confirm my answer but I'm not aware that other countries function differently than America on this. In America, the day package rental rate is the day package rental rate. There is no 3 day week or any such discounts.
I feel like we have a conversation about this XD. For the past year or two I have been trying to build my kit and knowledge to justify or more better align with the standard. I'm not a seasoned mixer but I'm not a beginner either. Plus I'm non-union, "advanced" hobbyist. XD
Do you have any knowledge if the strike is affecting mexico's productions as well? I just graduated college and im looking to get into the industry as any sound role, but it's getting tricky. There was always this "promise" that there's a lack of sound people in my city and that it should be easy to land a sound role
I’ve tried pretty much all the advice I could find online-on RU-vid, Reddit, tech forums, etc.-and none of it worked. So, I decided to replace the CMOS battery, and that actually solved the problem. Man, you don’t know how frustrated I was with this issue, which had been ongoing for two weeks. Luckily, it fixed the problem. I also recommend replacing your RAM if it doesn’t get fixed after replacing the CMOS. Dunno, maybe I just have a weird computer. This behavior started when my girlfriend accidentally knocked over my PC.
Without popfilter you sounded more alive to me, at least to my ears. I've been testing the same on myself and it happens the same. It's a popfilter like yours. I believe that there is a slight cut happening in the high frequencies.
Allen, you crack me up. I appreciate your cander and to the point approach. it keeps me interested. I Love your no nonsensense approach. I am a live engineer by trade, but love learning other aspects of sound from you. Keep doing what you are doing. I will always come back to you and listen to what you what you have to share. I wish you more sucess than you think you deserve. You are a rock star to me.
I got a nicefoto fresnel with barndoors today. It's one of those mass produced things with a dozen brand names stamped on them. Really low expectations. But it works far better than the smallrig, and it actually fits a bowens mount, unlike the aputure, and the barndoors actually cut the light, unlike the godox. Pleasantly surprised.
About half the things I've ordered from neewer this year, I've returned. The remaining items... one is dysfunctional but cheap, one seems simple and seems to work, and the other two, well, so far so good. Surprisingly, the only things that seem to work are their video lights. They sent me a crooked tripod once. I assume the lights are outsourced somewhere different from usual
I found that similar methods in topic 1 work well with fixin audio in RX. Rather than dialing a module to 11 to try and squash everything all at once, I will apply a gentler setting over multiple passes. Not exactly analogous to a traditional chain or anything, but I believe similar in principle.
Please read this : ( All i wanna know is: Should use my SM7B with or without my SE DM1 Dynamite on a GOXLR set up The reason i ask is because i cannot hear which one give me less background noise with my headphone ...
@@SoundSpeeds Thanks for that answer also i would like no ask you another one, is there a difference in quality let's say i want 60db total Which one is better ? 60db from the goxlr ? 48db from the goxlr + an additional 12db of gain from x filter ? 32db from the goxlr + the 28db of the DM1 ? I guess what i wanna know is if gain sources change the quality of the audio. Thanks you anyway for the previous answer !!!! It make sense this way !
@@SoundSpeeds Ok, cause i don't know why my brain is wired to think that " COMPUTER " gain should be worst than " PREAMPLI " gain, i view one as physical the other one like some post process and therefore that distort. I've tried all of the above and could not hear anyone to be worst than the other so ... i think i will rock with goxlr + SM7B all naked at 60db hopefully it is the best combo. Thank you man for having taking the time to answer me (👊🏽)
Love both topics covered. I’ve always gotten better results by using multiple instances of VSTs with less aggressive processing per instance (for noise removal and certain repairing type plugins). But it doesn’t seem like that is talked about much. Also, RU-vid audio. There is a lot of misconception about how bad it is from the old days when it truly was bad. But, they have improved the codec (with opus) and basically it sounds reasonably audibly transparent to the original.
You have quite an odd, sickly look in this one. I don't mind the short length, but... something in the lighting dept or something else seems to be off in this one.
Helpful video! Not a big fan of the green screen "look". In order to make it look right, you need a spend a ton of money to get the lighting to perfectly match what's going on in the background. I think what would be more fun is if you mix up your podcast recording locations and then review what you did to get clean audio even in challenging spaces. No only would it be interesting to see you in lots of different places, but it would help us learn some tips and techniques to use while "on location". You could also use different microphones based on what the environment calls for.
love this digestible length! don't have to pause it and watch later (got a few tabs with Sound Speeds videos open in the browser "to watch later") it's all about the knowledge you are sharing and i honestly don't really care about the background ... kinda like this ginky greenscreen and i appreciate your phantasy! keep surprising us if you don't mind :) i usually try to reduce it to one compressor (from -32dB to -25dB, 2.0-2.5:1 compression) on the channel and one (from -15dB about 3:1 compression) on the master where i add a limiter in post i do sporadically add a multiband-comp to the channel strip if needed - but yeah... like an art form: everyone is kinda right (and some are just numb - may be me... who knows :)
Thanks for the video. I am generally not a big fan of green screens, so... Good to know that video resolution doesn't affect the audio quality on YT. Not sure if the Fairlight Page in DaVinci Resplve Studio uses VSTs. Will have to look in to it. On the other hand, I really don't do much high end audio anyway (the best mic I have is an AT875R going in to a Tascam DR-60D MK II) so there is that.
Fairlight does use VSTs but I've not ever used it for more than to set up ducking so I'm not sure it runs multiples. I do know you have to add the VSTs via a path to Resolve though.
What is your opinion on using a multi-band compressor instead of multiple compressors set to different thresholds? I've seen some people use it instead of EQ to tailor the sound in much the same way?
At 33:35 you state that the resonance in the aluminum body of the S-Mic 3 sounds better than the resonance in the brass body of the S-Mic 2. Now I was under the distinct impression that resonance of ANY kind in a microphone body was a bad thing! You seem to be saying the opposite. What am I missing here? This short Podcastage video illustrates the point: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PV4v8Diww8I.html
What Bandrew is demonstrating is physical contact and resonance and he's right, you don't want to body of the mic to resonate with any vibrations whether physical via direct contact or acoustic vibration but in this case, I was referring to the resonance of the reverberations inside the mic. For example, if you are speaking in a room with hardwood walls, ceiling and floor, it will sound completely different when you speak in there as it would be if you were in a steel bank vault. Sounds waves disburse when they hit a surface and bounce thereby becoming less detailed. Inside the brass body, the sound waves resonate just as they do in the aluminum body but the metal itself shapes the sound as part of the engineering. Excellent point you make though and thanks for the point to clarify.
@@SoundSpeeds Not to be too mysterious - I'm interested in comparisons with the assassination attempt audio - where the gunshot sounds seemed canned. Just my opinion.
I recently bought two of Ric Viers book because they were recommended to me (I'm rather new to audio) but when I went to his website and saw this video, I immediately had to see if you reacted to it. Great and informative callouts on all the parts that I suspected to be BS! Now I'll be aware that anything this guy writes about needs further research.
I thought I was the only crazy one when it came to wearing all black. I entered the film and video industry as a gaffer. So I really understood the necessity of using all black so there isn't any spill. Most people don't do it. But I have been a boom operator more and more since then, especially because of your teachings. When someone asks me about my ninja outfit while on set I'll say: "If it's good enough for the boom operator of the Walking Dead it is perfect for me."
I've been helping my Dad clean his hi-fi set up and was stressing about trying to find an appropriate lubricant and stumbled on your video. I know just enough to know XLR cables were not what I was trying to lubricate. Within the first few minutes, you stated how it applies to other similar connections, used and recommended a product others have, gave me a solution to an issue only tangentially related(cotton pipe cleaners, genius), and kept me watching a whole 7 minute video about a dry topic. I fix up old guitars and their electronics make me nervous, but I feel like your channel will really help. Bummed I'm this late to such an awesome party. Creators like you are why RU-vid is worth the billions. You are awesome. Wish I could buy you a beverage to say thanks.
