We are an Alabama couple placed in California on military assignment experiencing what the California off-road life is all about and this thing called overlanding. We are all about Off-Roading and overlanding in particular, Join us for our adventures as we learn the ins and outs of overlanding and off-roading. We will do gear reviews, installs, and some minor fabrication. We are normal people just trying to have fun and keep the adventure going as we navigate this world that God has given us. God Bless and hope to see you on the trails.
As soon as you turn off the highway onto the dirt there are plenty of places to camp but if you go a little ways up into trails there are some good spots that are more shielded from the wind and that’s where I recommend.
I hadn't thought about it but you do totally need a grease zerk on both sides of the joint if theyre adjustable. Manufacturing discrepancy on your particular rig could result in having one up and one down
Good video. 5 hours is pretty good really. It will probably take me 5 days, but then again I'll be using a creeper and I am 64 with time on my hands. Cheers from Canada!
1st. The gold mine is most likely a claim. They have no rights more then you other then they claimed the mineral. I spend a lot of time in the Bradshaws. The miners have no private property rights. You can camp next to their hole and they cannot tell you to leave. This is also a dirt road trail. Not a real Bradshaw back road trail.
Also have a 2014 and all these issues. I’m beyond frustrated and DONE with Jeep. Oil cooler, 2 cams, rocker arms etc etc. And still getting codes and in limp mode. Once this thing is fixed THIS time around I’m selling it. What a great job jeep is doing in driving customers away. Love my jeep but it’s just not sensible to keep. Never had ANY vehicle in my life that had these BS issues.
@@GrayLineOverland yes. Replaced at the dealer. Oh. Also have a rear main seal leak. lol. Never heard of a rear main seal until I got a Jeep. lol. Never had a car with that issue either. Thanks to Jeep, my knowledge as a mechanic has increased while my bank account has decreased. Jeep can go kick rocks. POS quality
Wow that’s sad I had a jasper motor that did the same thing and they ended up replacing it after I did a bit load of troubleshooting only thing I could figure is something to do with the oil pressure to the oil control valves. It was never figured out while I had it though
I'm glad I saw your video. Some of the issues you discussed are extremely important (i.e., gel coat and third-party manufacturer warranties) if I'm going to spend the kind of money they're asking. And it's certainly unacceptable for a company to send me the warrantied materials and tell me I'm responsible for the cost of installation. I'll stick to the DIY utility trailer/rooftop tent setup I already own. It was inexpensive to buy and fix up, it carries everything I need when I camp, and I don't have to worry about multiple manufacture warranties. Also the fitment on an expensive little teardrop needs to be top notch because I don't want to have to keep returning to Bean Trailer for little things, mainly since I live three states away.
The gel coat has gotten better from what I have heard and the warranty dept in general has gotten better. I don’t think I would go high end on a teardrop again but would prob stick to the ones around the 10grand mark as at that price you can look over small stuff and also afford to make it your own.
Hey thanks for the info. I'm stuck on a P0390 . I changed the mopar cam sensors, just re-wired it all... Cleared all codes and 5 miles later engine light on again. Thoughts? 2012jk wrangler 4dr
@@wackz I would do both on bank 2 at minimum. When I did mine I did all four just to make sure I didn’t have to go back in later. Only buy the genuine mopar ones.
Nice review Kevin, I just stumbled upon it. Looks like I got my Bean just after you and many of your points were already addressed. Some counter points: 1. I considered over 20 trailers before purchasing my Mean Bean and none had better warranties, and none offered a lifetime leak warranty on the shell. I’ve had our Bean for 2 1/2 years, with almost 15,000 miles on it, and have no issues with the clear/gel coat cracking or chipping. It still looks brand new. Keep in mind we store ours in the garage. 2. We go off road a lot, including miles of washboard, and have never had the cabinet doors or drawers come open. I had a sticky drawer and Bean happily replaced it (it was within the first year). 3. The “attic” is not meant for large item storage. We usually put light items up there like flashlights TP, jackets, etc. However, I like your idea of a net! 4. I believe Bean now offers AC and heat. 5. The Bean galley cabinet doors now come standard with locking latches. I too had the magnets but Bean was happy to get me the new locking latches that I installed myself. 6. My fridge slider came with a lock out. Love it! 7. My water pump is plenty powerful, although a bit loud. 8. The tire size is just right for us. Any bigger and you really limit getting into a standard garage. We air down before going on washboard roads and that’s all that’s needed. 9. In my experience, with nearly 15,000 miles (plenty of which were off road), our Mean Bean has proven itself time and time again and is a great overland camper. 10. Lastly, the entire Bean team has been great to work with. They have been responsive to all my questions and have gone above and beyond in my experience. Thanks for the review!
Yes they were working hard to resolve the issues and they grew so fast it was at a time of growing pains for them. I put similar kind of miles maybe 20000 or so and spent lots of time off-road as it was bought for that purpose alone so I am a lot harder on one than most but that’s why I was able to really see the issues. Thanks for the info and glad you have had a pleasant experience
I love love this review. Thank you for your candid and honest review of Bean. Since this video 2 years ago I hope Bean improved their warranty department. You're not a paid sponsor masking as a reviewer. I just subscribed to your channel.
Looks ok but have no experience with them. Coils are not dual rate but neither were my jks springs and I loved them. I would say on the budget end it looks ok but I wouldn’t expect it to be the same quality as rock krawler or metalcloak. The more budget friendly stuff doesn’t last as long but you’re paying half the price so that’s to be expected and as long as you know that you should be pleased.
@18:30 Pro Tip From a former YJ Owner, Keep a can of WD-40 and if you run thru a puddle again, Hose down the distributor cap and wires. they like to let water in a kill your spark when you romp thru puddles like that.
I'm Thinking about being Dumb/Brave and trying this in my 2wd Dakota... do have MT tires and a winch... I think I could do it. I live near sylacauga so it's not far away.
@@GrayLineOverland thanks for replying, if it’s the same spot I’m thinking I live like 8-10 minutes from it, if you’re coming from Alabama does it end near highway 100 in Georgia ? I live on the Georgia side where treat mt road crosses 100

Worn out cams because all the dry starts due to the pos oil filter/cooler housing. Ever wonder why the CTG filter is dry after pulling it out? It drains ALL oil back to the sump when shut down. Start engine and it’s gotta reprime the filter, etc before pressure gets to the bearings and cams. Stupid design. Solution? Get a Baxter performance filter adapt which has an anti drain valve. Top it with a good WIXcan filter!
Cams were good but phasers were bad but yea very poor design that is solved with the Baxter item I totally agree. I never did it because I ended up getting rid of the Jeep not long after I found that solution.
@GrayLineOverland Thank you for posting this video So if I understand correctly you replaced both cam Phase Actuators on the drivers side in this video and you did this because after you replaced the camshaft position sensors in the back of bank 1 and bank 2 with mopar sensors it didn’t fix the problem. So you had your Jeep scanned again after replacing the rear camshaft position sensors bank 1 and bank 2 with mopar sensors and you now get a code that implicates the cam phase actuators on the front drivers side. You replace these front drivers side cam phase actuators and that doesn’t fix your problem and we are now at the end of your video… So what happened after this ? you replaced all four cam phasers on both sides all in one job and this fixed your problem ? Do you remember what code you got after you replaced the two front cam phase actuators on the drivers side and before you replaced the cam phasers on all four sides ? After you replaced all four cam phasers (two on each side) this fixed all problems? And you drove the Jeep for long enough to know it permanently fixed the problem and then you sold the Jeep ? If you could confirm all of the details and my understanding as I summarized it above it would help me try to figure out what to do next with my 2014 wrangler jk.
So I know its been awhile and maybe figured it out by now, but pour a shot of cold water down the spout of your coffee pot after your boil and it wll knock the grounds down to the bottom. Old cowboy trick, safe travels.
One of the better RV videos on RU-vid today guys, perhaps you might consider selling them ? The salesman representing Sunray are nothing short of a joke.
Yep had to replace my oil cooler too. Just replaced both my camshaft position sensors and it still throws the codes. I was wondering if it is the seals.
May I ask what the the oil control valve timing chain is ? I’m familiar with what removing the valve covers means and what removing the timing chain to get to replace the cam phasers . But I’m curious to know what the oil control valve timing is ? Are these the oil gallery bolts ?
Thank you, guys and gals, for sharing this video. I am originally from the Birmingham area and have been away for a very long time but have recently moved back to the area. I have a stock TJ Rubicon that after a few maintenance repairs, I plan on doing these trails!
“Wired for solar…”. Yeap, many builders say that. Like you said, just means you get a Zamp/SAE plug. It wasn’t too bad running the wire and installing a charge controller.
I just picked up a lightly used one of these for $5K from a friend. My Jeep XJ tows it easily and it’s great for everything from Costco runs to beach day trips to off grid camping. I’m really happy with it so far.
I get a p0369 code for the last 2 yrs. Been getting it almosr everyday now. Im at 307k miles on my 2013 jk. Ive reppaced the bank 2 cam sensor 3 times. Its deff not the sensor. Im thinkin the jeep is old and the phasers need replacement
@@GrayLineOverland yep for sure. Do you know if i have to use some scanner tool to help the car computer to relearn the timing? Because i can do the mechanical part
@whatroads4x4 Did you replace the cam phasers and if so did it work ? I have a 2014 Jeep Wrangler jk with 180 k miles I have replaced the rear bank one and rear bank 2 camshaft position sensors with mopar sensors as well as replaced the both wiring harnesses with mopar replacement wiring harness and it did not fix the problem either. Because my ABS light comes on with the check engine light I replaced the two front ABS sensors with mopar ABS sensors as well and this didn’t fix the problem. I’m considering trying the cam phasers next
@@jamesangrisano9225 hey. No i have not. Just bought a new truck. Jeeps still runs. It now has overheating issues here and there that im focusing on, might be a bad head gasket. But yes the jeep here and there , puts me in limp mode if im pushing it. I was waiting to purchase a new vehicle so i could give the jeep some down time. Gonna do some work on it in the next few months and make it a dedicated offroader. Ill check back in. But judging from everything ive learned and read, i believe the spring in the cam phasers, lose there tension overtime on top of cam wear etc. Ill be doing cams, rockers, phasers and watever else is worn out. And possibly a head gasket. But i might just scrap that whole idea and go with a v8 engine. Im running at 327k miles now haha.
Yep, cam phaser is your issue. I have the same problem on my 2013 JKU. It was never related to anything electrical. I replaced both cam phasers on bank 2 and it resolved the issue.
@gravylagged Congratulations on fixing this very complicated Problem. Did replacing both cam phasers on bank 2 fix the problem in the long run for you ? Bank 2 is drivers side (right side) if you are standing in front of the car right ? What did you try doing that didn’t work prior to replacing the cam phasers on bank 2 ? Did you replace the bank 2 cam phasers your self or did you pay a mechanic to do it ? Did you do the official relearn using a scan device after the cam phasers were installed ?
@GrayLineOverland Did you do the relearn using a scanner after replacing the cam phasers for the other people with JK Jeeps that you did this job for? Did you replace all four cam phasers for these other people or just two on one side ? Did replacing the cam phasers for the other people fix the issue for these people ? Or did they just come back complaining of the same issue and did they just give up or did you end up needing to replace other components and do more work for them ? Lastly for your own did replacing the four cam phasers really fix it ?
