Changes can already be seen on the Magothy this year - Dolphins spotted many times this summer, sea grasses growing, better water visibility. It may not be from the oysters, but the combined efforts to improve water quality are working.
Grew up and worked the waters of the Bay for many years. I really hope this way of life is preserved but sadly many young ppl aren't following in many parents footsteps. Love growing up on Bay. Forgot all about this doc being made. Seen myself in action crabbing been off the water now for 7 years.. miss it alot.
I never lived on the bay, but I spent a good part of my life crabbing & fishing on it. I wish for nothing but good fortune for the Smith island community.
In the game of bay conservation there is just no silver bullet remedy...but recently i've seen conflicting reports on the recent health of the bay and from direct observation over the past couple years i definitely think there's been some modest improvement. The trick is to maintain this trajectory.
What a great place! I just watched Pete Santello (sp) that did a video on both islands , Smith and the other one inside it and it reminded me of a book about the same area, but it was about Oystermen and Chesapeake Bay Area, it’s “Skipjack” by Christopher White. I’m starting to wonder if I’m not meant to go to that Island, it just sounds perfect for me…..It’s most definitely on my bucket list….

Enjoyed your video, thanks very much. Our local lake has these all along the shoreline making it very tough to land a fish. I made myself a small grappling hook and cleared an area for use. Also found out not to grab the chestnuts tightly as the pods are very sharp.
Not one mention of the blue catfish intro by Virginia back in the 70s-80s. Based on personal stomach content checks from catches…. Devastating! Much more than legacy scrappers and chicken neckers. Btw have any the commenters ever seen a scrapper? They are very few active and no where near big business. There are much bigger impacts than those old timers. Focus on the foundation not the chipping paint
If it's anything in Maryland like it is in Florida you can't hardly get a crab license without buying one from someone for at least 10 grand. Government has a moratorium on new crab licenses in Florida
