I'm 49 and I can remember my mom telling me the stories of my Great-grandfather. He helped build this Trolley Line..and unfortunately meeting his death by Trolley also. He was hit and killed by one here within Washington County. Thank you for sharing,no matter how old this video is.

Great video. As an 8-12 year old boy from 1958-62 we often went from Baltimore to Hagerstown. I remember myn Pop pointing out the old right-of-way along old Rt. 40 and just imagined seeing the interurban cars going up and down those steep hills.

If they had just modernized this system instead of destroying it, Frederick and Hagerstown would have been such a better place

I’m so happy to have seen this. I clearly remember because I rode the last trolley from Thurmont to Frederick. My uncle, Earl Oden, called my parents in Harrisburg and Dad gathered us and drove down to Frederick, meeting Earl and his wife Margaret..and perhaps Uncle John (Wilburn). All of them grew up in Frederick and Thurmont. My father was a news photographer so I helped with his Speed Graphix and flashbulbs. Uncle Earl brought a case of cold beer. I was 15 years old so the history didn’t interest me as much as the novelty and fun that we had. I’m going to see if I can find the photos.

That must be a great memory! I would love to see them if you find them, in fact, we would love to keep copies (or the originals if you preferred) in the research archives of the H&F Railway Historical Society and perhaps use them in future presentations. We also are interested in documenting memories through audio and/or video interviews if you would be interested in participating in that program. www.hfrhs.org

The last trolley in Hagerstown made its last run in February 1947, a month before I was born. I wish I would have asked my mother if she rode the trolley up until then. I might have ridden on it. Inside her, of course.

Actually the "Official" Last Trolley from Hagerstown to Williamsport was August 4th that year, with regular service having ended the day before. The last Frederick to Thurmont trolley was February 20, 1954.

@@reubenmoss9214 Thanks for that information. I had read local sources that gave February 20, 1947 as the last trolley run. They must have confused that with the Frederick to Thurmont run.

Thanks for making this presentation. Did the H&F actually intersect with the B&O branch that went to downtown Frederick?
@Ahgjan
@Ahgjan 5 лет назад
They shared some track near South Street in later years, and the H&F tracks crossed the B&O yard tracks on Carroll Street. There is evidence that there may have at one time been a platform and siding from the H&F to transfer freight out of cars into the B&O freight station but this was likely not used often.

Thanks for producing and posting this. It must have taken a lot or research on your part. I've never heard of this most interesting little interurban. Makes me want to go explore when the weather improves.

William Russ when you know where to look you can find a lot of the route still. Due to overgrowth much of the interesting portion of the right of way is best seen while leaves and undergrowth are absent.

Of course, I should have thought of that. I spend most of the winter months in Vietnam so, as much as I'd like, I won't be back until late March.

Great memories of this trolley from Frederick to Yellow Springs. I used to pick up the FNP paper from the drop off at the sitting platform in Yellow Springs
