I bought a 6-qt crockpot and it has 4-6-8-10 hour settings. 8-10 are low. So does that mean if I cook for 6 hours in low I have to set at 8- hours and check at 6 hours. It's not programmable. I will use it for the first time this coming Friday.

Does anyone know , my new electric roaster has a defrost sitting. Since my fridge seems to be too cool and not defrosting my turkey the normal way, how long does it take to defrost a 16 lb turkey in the roaster oven? And has anyone ever used the setting?

Milk has no room in bean soup. It ruins the flavor and consistency .

Latching the lid is only for transporting or after the unit has stopped cooking. At least that’s what I read. While the unit is cooking, you should not latch the lid because steam needs to vent, albeit slowly.

Carrots take longer to cook than potatoes. I can't imagine this a navy bean on Northern Bean and ham cream soup. It's sort of turns my stomach but since I've never tried it I really can't comment. You may not want me around as I am a serial commenter. I'm home alone in the evening and night time so I want you too and talk to the TV incessantly. When the cat is awake I'll talk to him. LOL

I think in my soup with beans it works really nicely and you don't have to bother making a roux. You can make a big jar of roux and stuck it in your refrigerator. It will last almost indefinitely and that way you can just put a spoonful or two in what you want to thicken.

Carrots celery and onions is a mirepoix which is the base for many many soups stews and sauces. Of course it is French and I lived in France for a short time and I hated it!

I was lucky to have some fresh thyme in the refrigerator last night. We put in about half the container and then pulled out the stems. It really made a nice nice difference in the soup I didn't need to add much at all besides garlic it didn't even need salt because of the ham hocks. It's just an all-around Good soup for the winter. It is -9° where I live right now! It was the same last week so give me something hot to eat. :-)

I used dry Great Northern beans and I can't imagine putting milk in! Gak! I used for ham hocks and got quite a bit of meat and they turned sweet when they cooked in the soup for quite a while. I have enough dried beans legumes and pulses for the zombie apocalypse! :-)

I just made 14 quarts of this last night and since close to half home with my caregiver because I am teaching her how to cook American food and finding things that she really loves. She really loves the soup and so does her four year old so home run and she's pregnant so it's very good for her health! I love this soup. My stock pot is 16 quarts and it's not as tall as it is wide. I still need help to cook because I can't see up in the pot and I made some white hot chocolate the other night and got milk all over the burner! It's now a microwave procedure! LOL I take 30 oz of the cooked beans and whiz them up with my hand blender and add them to the soup and that's just as much body as I want it's very nice it takes it from a clear broth to and not clear broth.

I also have a 16 quart stock pot. When cooking soup I try and fill it to the max. Most of the soup goes in the freezer. Sometimes I don't have to cook for weeks on end.

I agree about the KitchenAid Stand Mixer being a MUST HAVE because I do a lot of baking & cooking! I’m blessed to have 2 of them! I also have a Cuisinart Blender as well and it’s DURABLE! Another must have for me is a Juicer! I GOTTA BE HEALTHY! Now I would love to upgrade to a Cuisinart Food Processor and a VitaMix Blender one day!
