The sight of her when she first emerges on stage is utterly grotesque. It only becomes more so when contrasted with her beautiful and upbeat singing. The only thing more grotesque is how this was normalized and accepted by our society then and long after. To condemn her now would b e unfair as she was merely a product of her times. Rather it is American society itself that must be held accountable, for normalizing and institutionalizing racism.
