I have same old tar-like material as the membrane. Whenever it gets hot, say summer the flat smells bad. I’m sure this is because it doesn’t breathe, as it would do with a modern build.
You saved my blood pressure but not as you might imagine. I had dismantled a draw in the unit & had two random white plastic pieces left & couldn't, for the life of me, work out where they came from. I knew they came from the runner but didn't know where. I just caught a glimpse of them in your video so was able to replace them back to where they needed to be so thanks for that, 👍
I do mine using a long handled small mop and spray the mop cloth with the bleach solution, cillit bang mildew and mould remover, dettol mould remover or just a solution of bleach and water. You don't have to wipe it just blot it if you prefer and it works. The only thing is that in some places the paint has peeled slightly. I find that in the summer when the window is open all the time I don't get the problem, it's just the winter time.
I feel like a light oil is a light oil. One is in aerosol form while the other is not. All oil will displace water and is a lubricant to some degree. Unless you have additives like solvents of some type to help the oil breakdown certain residues, light oil is light oil. If one is heavier than the other than there are some qualities one may have the other doesn’t for certain tasks. My advice, any lubricant that sprays out in aerosol form is likely to be lighter and may also dry out or breakdown faster than a heavier light oil. JMO tho.
There's a video on the Velux website about replacing the glass in their windows. Like your problem, the video shows it also involves replacing a seal on top of the glass (where you've put mastic) . As someone else has commented, the job you're doing should be done by removing the internal/opening frame and you do that from the inside. The hinges are designed for removing the window frame. Removing the internal frame from inside means you avoid damaging the flashing (the metal bits you bent with your pliers) and avoid cracking tiles, and falling off the roof. Velux also sell the sealant strip you need to make the window watertight as an accessory, and it's not expensive.
I'm a one man operation , I had a get it done type of attitude, if I have to bend a bit of sheet metal to do it ,I do it . I thought there might be a gasket .but I couldn't get one ,, hence the Dow external sealant so I got it done.and it hasn't leaked yet Bob and Lucy long time clients were happy
Tips ??? This guy is totally handless and absolutely useless , drunk in a dark room I could leave a better finish and I’m not a plasterer this would put any DIY er off this is an avoidable mess .
