40 feet of line to not even complete a lean-to? Yikes!! I normally build mine without using any but to each their own. Couple packs of shingles that you hike into the woods, and that thing will almost be done.
@thesurvivaluniversity I get using some line. I don't get using 40 feet of it. You teach your "students" to walk around everywhere with 40+ feet of para-cord? Or is this a camping trip where you could have just brought a tent? I don't get it. Are you "surviving" with what you have or camping with too little gear? In both cases, having 40+ feet of 550 on you is crazy.

Forget what this man says listen to somebody who's who's lived in a tent for the last 7 years do not put leaves in your tent it just gives the rats a place to hide not to mention a place where they can drag all of your food back to causing spoilage which then causes a smell and it's gnarly
I do agree that it can give rats a place to nest. But we have our 50 day immersion students live in their own primitive shelters. Leaves are good for roof waterproofing (duff) ( at least 3 feet). Leaves are good for bedding to get you up off the ground. If you are having rat problems that can end up being a good thing, meaning you can set dead fall traps for food.
If you're short on rope when you're stranded in nature, use nails instead. Just ask your neighborhood bear if you can borrow his hammer. Bam problem solved
Of course! Every bear I’ve ever met is more than happy to lend out their tools. I’m sure they keep their hammer right next to the picnic basket they stole from the last camper. Problem solved indeed-just don't forget to bring them some honey as a rental fee!

Thanks for your comment! Just to clarify, no, I’m not suggesting anyone should pack chemicals in case they plan on getting stranded…because, let’s be honest, who plans to get stranded? This video is simply one of many techniques to start a fire. In an actual survival scenario, you’d ideally use more accessible methods like modern tools, friction or flint and steel. But hey, it's always good to expand your knowledge, right? Stay safe out there, whether you’re planning to get stranded or not!
As an outdoorsman you should know your trees, and I must tell Ya, those boughs are not pine! With such short pokey needles, they're probably balsam although they could be spruce. I can't get a close up enough look to tell for sure.

I referred to them as 'pine' for simplicity's sake, as it’s a more commonly recognized term in general discussions. Fun Fact: The phrase " they are so poor they don't have a pot to piss in" came from when they tanned hides with urine. If you had nothing else you could sell your urine carried in pots to the tanner. There were those who were so poor they had no pot to carry the urine in to the tanner. They were those at the absolute bottom of the poverty bracket.
The way inflation is heading there is soon to be many so poor that they too will not have a pot to piss in. The Government no longer calls those in this situation homeless they just call them unhoused because homeless statics are track and no one has thought to start tracking the unhoused. Nice recall on why it was called to poor to have a pot to piss in.
I think the key with the cotton is: Melt 2/3 wax, 1/3 Vaseline. Dip, only soak briefly. Dip again. Burn end with flame ahead of time. If you "say your ABCs" thats WAY YONDER too long to use right off with Ferro only. Dip one end of a long rope, heck man, LEAVE part of it plain if you want😂 That way, you'll get an ember as sure as skunk stinks! My problem is everywhere I look, that upholstery piping is $$$ for 100 feet of anything 1/4 inch and up. But hey a 1 inch 100% cotton rope chunk makes some of the best char material you will ever use. Its producing a big ol honkin ember like a cigar. Chunk THAT in your tinder bundle😂😂. I guess there's about 1000 ways to do this.
Its like using a fire piston and picking out the ember. That is THE most nerve wrecking thing in all of Bush craft to me, except fire drill!.😁 So I get the ember and then just BLOW that ember into a bigger chunk of char!😂 A shepherds lighter works just like that. As long as it don't get wet, the wind can blow its lungs out and all that Shepherds lighter wick will do is glow freak in red hot . It LOVES high wind brother😂
