I am an archaeological excavator of many years experience since 1985 and mainly Romano-British work in Colchester, Essex. I also have a growing interest in the Minoan world of eastern Crete and feel that there is a lot of sub-marine work to be undertaken near the village of Zakros. I understand that some research work has already been undertaken regarding pre-dynastic ancient Egypt. Any information you have on the subject will, I am sure, be most interesting.
Dr Given is a first class lecturer and a lovely person too. I did my degree in archaeology at Glasgow university, I originally was doing history, history of art and archaeology, I was going to do just history but after meeting Dr Given, Dr Brophy and Dr Driscoll I knew I wanted to do purely archaeology. Dr Givens lectures are information dense, the slides are clear and he always provides a bibliography containing a variety of different sources so your not totally reliant on library books plus he's great to talk to if you're not sure about something. I chose my dissertation because his lecture really inspired me, I knew my topic after his lecture. Everyone loved Dr Given at uni. He really helped me when I experienced family issues while at uni, I don't think I'd have done nearly as good as I did without his help. I really miss uni now
La mayoría de los arqueólogos son ateos y nunca estudian la biblia como fuente, además el éxodo fue desde Egipto hasta canaan cruzando por el golfo de Aqaba y llegando a arabia Saudita donde está el verdadero monte sinai
Finally, a little star power at one of these things. Good job getting Theo from "The Durrells in Corfu" as emcee. He was excellent, though Lawrence would have been more fun.
he doesn't see the irony, he talks about the biases of the Biblical writers, the main bias is in fact this 'lecture'. Amazing he knows more about what happened over 2,000 years than the people alive at the time. this talk is assumption and speculation.
Well, he's right - the biblical writers were biased. And I'm reading his book "Beyond the Texts" right now and nowhere does he ever claim that he knows more than ancient people did. In fact, quite the opposite.
Dear Prof: No "cowboys" are going to "gladly" kill you in cold blood if you don't believe the Bible. Pick-up trucks are for rough terrain and work, gun racks are for hunting rifles, it's called legal culling, there are hunters all around the world helping to keep local ecosystems in balance. In general, Christians (I'm a nonbeliever) are peaceful people. Very silly & prejudiced comment reinforcing stereotypes about Americans.
I am not too sure you have met the same "Christians" I have. Some of which would love to bring back stoning to death as punishment for homosexuality, adultery or various other "crimes"... and I do not think they would have a problem tossing some firewood in his direction if he was to find himself tied to a stake.
It's sad to see a great mind succumb to the temptations of thoughtless political snobbery. The pickup truck driver is infinitely more likely to aid the author with bravery and at personal risk that to shoot him, even after reading his book. Personally, I look forward to reading the book. And I would put the bumper sticker on my truck just to tweak pathetic TDS sufferers into a much needed catharsis from which they might recover sanity
His research is interesting, but his knowledge about American Politics is beyond his area of study. I think he should stick to what he know and keep political comments out of his presentations it would make him sound more authoritative.
He's speaking as a private citizen when he does that, not as an authority on American politics. You just disagree with his political views, so you dismiss his authority/expertise on his chosen field.
Archaeology truly is an enforcement of biblical events, but Faith is a derivative of the Holy Spirit in whom the Father chooses to reveal by the in dwelling Spirit of the Son to be a son, The Father expressed hear His Son, the gun bearers are still yet to hear this message, intellectual understanding will also bear doubt to the supply of not complete belief that reflects in Trust, a non prayerful study will also add to doubt. We have been given what we have been given Deut 29:29 "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. Acts 5:32 And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."
Very wise words. I like it very much to hear and read Professor Dever. It is because of scholars like him that I became interested in the history of the Bible. In fact, I bought his last book (Beyond the Texts) online yesterday, and I can't wait for it to arrive to Chile....
