That movie's biggest plot point was also it's biggest polt hole. If he instead took the one day Shrek rescued Fiona and didn't try to enslave the ogres then after the 24 hours it was up he would have been the rightful ruler to the Kingdom of far far away and Fiona were just been a nobody and without the enslaved ogres she also wouldn't have risen an army in defiance. Shrek would have been able to just go back to his home instead and not realize what was happening until it was too late and Fiona wouldn't have an army to lead. Shrek would just think that that was just his one regular day at his home instead.
