Funny, somebody a year ago wrote, "John applied his deep Blues and Jazz roots" "... deep blues and jazz roots" from where? Born and raised in Fairfield, Connecticut (the heart of blues country no doubt), raised by educators and went to Berklee School of Music (maybe some jazz there) "deep roots" ummmm
i feel like we’ve grown to associate the “greatest” guitarists ever with a century that’s now passed; the 20th century, particularly the 1960s 70s and 80s with hendrix, clapton and stevie etc, and so whenever somebody new emerges holding a guitar post-2000 we’re all like “yeah but they’re never gonna be on THAT level,” when john mayer is legit on THAT level. At some point down the johnny mayer rabbit hole you realise, oh shit, he actually is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. people just don’t wanna admit it cause he exists in the modern day. If this guy was jamming like this back in the 70s everybody would’ve hailed him as the second coming of hendrix. Funny how circumstance affects our perception ain’t it.
So what, so I've got a smile on But it's hiding the quiet superstitions in my head Few things in my life have been more cathartic than singing that line with 20,000 strangers who have also felt lost at times in their lives.
