An American Homestead is about 2 families who left the big city in 2012. Now, after many adventures, successes and failures this single dad, 2 growing boys and his late wife's parents hack out their existence in the raw mountains of the American Ozarks.
If you are a prepper, homesteader, or a survivalist who wants to learn how to live off grid, this is the channel for you!
We are all about modern homesteading and off grid living. We concentrate more on the raw education that comes with off grid living. You can see more behind the scenes videos at the An American Homestead Patreon page.
my honey con is the simple fact that all creatures are the same, which means that honey is either bee poop or male bee ejaculations - so i don't consume honey ..
I've eaten both and they're not bad. I've raised lambs and they are professional escape artists. Haven't raised goats and the best thing I could say about them is that they provide some entertainment value. Gotta agree with the milk issue. Sheep milk yogurt is the best.
YOU will wish you freeze dried your preserves when the crash comes. You can buy an affordable smaller one. Its good for stalking and storing your garden veggies and meats and anything you may need if the shelves go empty that do not keep. So you can't do everything it can do. Also makes some great powders. We all don't have sun year round or gardens or can do all the things you do. The food lasts up to 25 years!
I have to 'working pet' goats. I named them after their jobs; Bush Hog and Weed Wacker. They do a good job at keeping an area I can't get a mower into clear.
Glad we got our Oupes! We are in the upstate of SC. lost power on the 27th and have no idea when it will be back on...But we are all set between the gas generator and our Oupes!
And aliens might land and kill us all. Stop living your life according to the worse case scenario. If an EMP goes off right over you, nothing will work and you'll have FAR bigger problems than your solar generator not working. Comments like this are just excuses to not prepare. Don't be a grasshopper. Be an ant.
Great video Zach. I feel you 100%. Just bought 50acres in the mountains. Can’t wait to move out of this suburb and start building real wealth. Tired of everything artificial & illusions
If this works, which it looks like it does, then why don't ecologists use this to flush out the invasive species. Eg. In Victoria, our rivers have been smashed with the carp who are killing all our our native species (Trout). Why cant we start at the mouth of the river and section by section throw these seeds and scoop up all the carp. By the time we get to the top, all the mother carp will be gone leaving the carp roe for the new season. Rinse and repeat this process straight away before the baby carp grow up and have a chance to breed. Yes, i understand the river will have no fish species what so ever however, you can just introduce the native roe to the river and that's it. Back to normal??
This was awesome. Thank you for this. I was getting anxious with all the fuss with this freeze drying thing. I mean, something happens, and God forbid, there will be no electricity... you'll have a $5,000 garbage can.
Lol, I like your videos, but theres only one real Titan solar generator. The Titans from Point Zero Energy. Tried and true, the only ones portable, stackable,no cable connecting units to batteries, infinately expandable, and with the real low frequency inverter, and as you mentioned, yes there all steel. Come in 120v, or 120v and 240v in one unit. The difference, the durability of low frequency, and they wont give you one for free to review, and of course the price. You get what you pay for. Before i get the comments, you can DIY cheaper, as Will Prouse said,to build a comparable unit to the Titan, you would be hard pressed to do it cheaper than they sell for,and they idle under 15w.
I agree with what you said but the point of the freeze dryer is not to have your freeze dryer at the end of civilization. Instead it’s to prep food that lasts for 25 years with almost all the nutritional value and flavor which dehydration will not do either. We have almost 3 years of meals freeze for our family of 3. My electric bill when running our freeze dryer is $1.60 a day. In regards to maintenance, any problems we’ve had with our machines I’ve been able to fix myself watching repair videos on RU-vid.. we have two machines and I’ve only had one issue that took me a day of effort to repair.
I think both goats and sheep can be used to good purpose in the right areas and with the right keepers. Here is NW GA, the few people I knew who tried sheep ended up switching to goats because of the sheep dropping dead for no apparent reason. However, I don't know how well they researched before getting sheep and I don't know what breeds they tried. It's worth finding someone in your area who is raising each successfully and willing to mentor before getting either (or both) of these kinds of animals.
My freeze dryers are the best investment EVER! I have already recouped my money in freeze dried goods, in less than a year! Not being able to afford one does not minimize it's value. Is it for everyone, there is a lot of work. We make everything from baby food to MREs.
Sorry, you can shear your own sheep just fine, with decent scissors, a good tying space or milktable and patience. Only if you want to sell a raw fleece that looks fancy, you'd need some skill. Some breeds have rooing coats so no need for tools to get the wool of. Here wool is worth nothing, you pay to get rid of it, some hobby ones excluded. So the wool comes of for the wellfare of the animals, not because it makes money. Weather wise, goats in the summer heat and sheep for the winter wet, to bad they are 2 different species. Barn is mandatory in Europe if you are a smart livestock handler, wolf problems are exploding over the continent so locking up your animals at night is just responsible thing to do.
These types of units are such a waste of money. Build your own with replaceable components. Figured a homesteading/self reliance channel would lean heavily into building your own generator that you can service yourself. Solar generators are unbelievably simple to build and I have parts stockpiled for both my solar generators in the event a component failure happens and it will. When it comes to solar anything, parts fail. Its a guaranteed. So why not make it easy to keep your generator in service for as long as possible? Not to mention that in a collapse, who at Oupes is going to care about your warranty, service or even bother answering the phone if it still works plus who's to say shipping is still operational? To me buying these things is like planning for a grid down but installing electric baseboard heaters in your home instead of a woodburner.
Mine and your experience is the exact opposite. 😂 With the amount of predators here, where I live , sheep are like a dinner bell on legs.😂 When I had sheep , they were the ones trying to commit suicide. 😂lol 😂. I do want to find a small flock of sheep.
Keyboard Jockey here. MPPT technology that will allow up to 140 volt input or 2100 watts, and no split phase is deal breaker. Crank-up the MPPT voltage and wattage and we can talk.
I am just about ready to buy a new larger Bluetti "solar generator" for my tiny cabin at the retirement homestead. Now you are stopping me in my tracks, and it may be a divine intervention!
i dont think most people realize how long it takes to develop a piece of raw land into a functioning money generating "homestead". me n the wife been going 5 years now. building the house, cutting in roads, utlities etc. just the basic stuff to start. weve sunk every dime we had saved and have earned into this so far and still have years to go b4 we reach a reasonable slowing down point. geuss we shoulda became gazillionaires b4 starting lol.determination and perseverance are paramount
Homesteading was historically about survival. Settle on a plot and survive. If you survive you get to do another season. Now days its got a new definition and rich or not apparently you can't do it without a channel. If a tomato grows and nobody videos it, would it still be eadible? I am enjoying your content. Stay blessed brother
I’ve had both hair sheep and Nigerian dwarf goats. I LOVE the goats and still have them. Sheep were “fine”. When it came down to it, I sold the sheep because the ewes were hard to handle and very flighty. The rams were highly destructive creatures, and tore up buildings and fence posts. I also prefer the goat meat to sheep meat. It’s much more mild and like beef. The goats (including the bucks) are friendly and easy to handle. Nigerian dwarf milk is fantastic, and absolutely nothing like the milk of standard breeds.
We have been building in resiliency into our tiny homestead for a few years now (extra propane tanks, wood burning heat and cooking, manual appliances like mills and stuffs). Our next big project is my apothecary. I have a 12x24 shed that we are converting to a dedicated work space for my creations (soaps, cleaners, candles, medicine, teas, etc.) It's hot in the swamp, so I'm looking for an air conditioned space to improve the longevity of my products. Also, it would be great to have a cool place to work and study as long as possible. I went straight to Oupes based on your reviews and I have an idea now of what I need. Thank you for doing these!
does this have an automatoc cutoff? i was trying tonrun a small fridge off a Bluetti, and whenever the fridge would get to temp, it stops drawing power. After a few minutes, the Bluetti's automatic cutoff would kick in. When the fridge needed to draw power again, the Bluetti would be turned off, and wouldnt supply power.
Great review. Ha. Now I not only want one, but if they ever have dealers, I’d like to sell them. I have a small solar system, but this is so much simpler for most people. 😊
I don't think they make one out there for 240 from any company. So when the gas runs out for your other generator, you'll be up a creek. Maybe get a 120 well pump and let the sun power it.
