Ha "periosteal elevator!" Been there. Done that. Fellow 2thDoc (retired). I ended up using a curved linoleum knife which worked well for removing the old Deck O Seal. I'm leaning towards using Sika self leveling polyurethane sealant. It is sold in a 29 ounce tube (3 colors) for a larger caulk gun. Saw it in another youtube video and seems to work well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WLWcRv2gn7Y.html Eliminates the need for the cooler and transfer to the squirt bottle. BTW the last time I used Deck O Seal, I just decanted it into a tall deli container and pinched the sides to pour it directly into the joint. Followed of course with the direction to "Rinse, please."

Great job and thanks for instructional video. Did you have to heat up the stuff with a heat gun to make it flow better? Thanks
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 2 года назад
No, do not add any kind of heat to this process. The mastic material should be kept cold until just before use to extend the working time or it will set up in process of trying to apply it. I had it stored in an ice chest prior to use and after mixing in the catalyst. One suggestion I received said you should not do this job in the heat of the day as the patio surfaces expand in the heat and then contract in the cold which can lead to separation after everything dries as the patio surfaces shrink in the cold weather or at night. This is a fun and rewarding DIY. Good luck!

Catalina traffic is best. You’re not landing in Avalon. My instructor corrected me on this many years ago. But hey, I think your splitting hairs here as anyone would know what you’re talking about whether you call it Catalina or Avalon.

@stephensmith60 2 года назад
@@rdgdds5359 It's been quite a while since I used to fly out there from Cable Field in Upland. I recall the call sign as AVX, but maybe pilots did a quick re-call to Catalina. The callout should always be the same as the Field I.D., no matter what you're CFI tells you. Perhaps he needs a re-fresher. Anyway - splitting hairs here. I don't fly there anymore.

@@stephensmith60 Yea, I think you are splitting hairs but to be clear: If you reference the charts the airport is called "Catalina" yet the airport ID is KAVX. That doesn't spell Avalon although I'm quite certain they used it as a reference. Additionally, my instructors have all been CFI II's and are very reputable and fly or have flown commercially. They fly every day of the week! I don't think they require a refresher. The correct way to identify The Airport in the Sky is using the phrase: Catalina Traffic! Avalon has nothing to do with the airport.

@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 2 года назад
@@stephensmith60 lol. I think you should just call it what you want. I’m sticking with Catalina traffic as that’s what’s indicated in the Chart Supplement which identifies the name of the airport. Like I said before, I think you’re being over critical! I don’t think it’s an issue as either designation will result in every pilot knowing what airport traffic is being identified. There are many airport identifiers which make no sense when it comes to the actual name of the airport. There are many airports in the Chart Supplement which identify the city they are associated with but the next line identifies the actual name of the airport. There are many examples of this if you look thru that document. I don’t think it’s critical unless you are flying in an airspace which is complex with many airports. Then, I think identifying the specific airport name is essential. Catalina Island also has heli pads located in Avalon which I’ve flown out of as well. It might seem more specific to you to ID Catalina Airport as Avalon but that is less specific because Avalon is not the specific name of the Airport in the Sky and has those pesky heli ports located in Avalon. Finally, my personal experience flying in there many times over the years and more recently reveals most all pilots identify it as Catalina Traffic. You shouldn’t disparage other pilots who are doing their very best in their approach and life long training in aviation and especially extremely competent and experienced instructors which I have had the great pleasure to learn from.

Hi Michael, No, I spent additional time gathering the necessary materials and there wasn't much online at the time to review as I recall. It's been almost 6 years I believe since I did the job and everything still looks great. Some good advice I received from another viewer was to try and do the job when it's not during the heat of the day due to expansion of the deck materials which could cause the product to stretch and de-seal during cooling in the evenings as the joint expands during cooling. Most of my time came from removing the old material and prepping the joint surfaces for the new material. Applying the new material goes pretty quick and then there's more time waiting for the product to dry. Good luck!

Hey Doc. Know this video is a year old BUT....... I just transitioned to the DA40 XLS and I don't like my iPad as a knee board. Do you know what ipad mount you're using, and do you like it mounted where it is? I'm left handed so it seems ideal.
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 4 года назад
Hi Christopher, I agree with your comments relative to having the iPad on the knee. It just gets in the way of the stick and throttle and is glaringly difficult to see at times. Thus, I purchased the X-Naut powered cooling iPad holder with a suction cup attachment. The X-Naut suction cup sometimes falls off as well as leaves the canopy with an ugly smudgy ring. Additionally, it's position obstructs visibility slightly. I have since modified the iPad holder by removing the suction cup and converting it to a home made aluminum clamp to clamp temporarily (meaning that no modification was made to the aircraft) to the left slightly angled lower portion of the instrument panel. The lower edge of the panel is exposed and there is just enough room to gently clamp the iPad holder without damaging anything. I also used a rubber coating on the portion of the clamp ends to facilitate preventing slippage and leave no damage when removed. I can send you some up close photographs and perhaps some DIY suggestions on how to convert the USB powered X-Naut for the mini iPad from the suction cup to a clamp. The standard size iPad is too big for this application. The current position of my iPad is excellent and feels natural. Additionally, it is just in front of the air vent and keeps the iPad cool without even turning on the X-Naut cooling fans. Removing just the suction cup and replacing it with the custom clamp (leaving all the other adjustment features of the X-Naut in place) retains complete adjustment of the iPad position as was with the original suction cup in place. Therefore, when installed it can be moved virtually anywhere to make it comfortable for you. One slight downside is that position of the iPad where I prefer it to be prevents the complete opening of the small vent window which doesn't bother me as there is enough room for me to place my hand outside the window to divert cool air in during taxi and run-up when needed. My more recent videos show the position of my iPad with the new clamp attachment. The DA40 XLS is a joy to fly. Happy flying!
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 4 года назад
Hi Christopher, I gave a reply some time ago and just discovered it was either erased or somehow didn't post. Anyways, I purchased an X-Naut which is battery cooled for the iPad. I then got tired of suctioning it to the windscreen canopy and so I modified it to clamp to the front instrument panel on the lower left side so it could be placed and removed without modification of the aircraft. It works great and you can see it in my more recent video postings. If you have interest in how I modified the X-Naut let me know and I can give you some direction. Thanks for the comment.

It was a unusual situation. It is a year new transponder installed to comply with the ADS-B in/out FAA requirement and just wasn't functional during the flight flight. I then flew the plane to Chino where it was installed and it functioned fine during that flight and the avionics company was unable to find anything wrong with it. They did update the software and indicated it may have been the issue. Hoping!

How the heck can you understand what KSNA tower is saying over the radio? I'd have to slow it down to half speed ... and for the record I do talk super fast. When you were cleared to cross 20R at Hotel, I literally can't understand what he is saying.
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 5 лет назад
Totally agree with you Christopher! Radio transmission in aviation was my most difficult part of learning to fly and I still am not real comfortable with it. One of the things a pilot learns is to expect what they will hear from the tower or ATC. After flying a while one begins to recognize what is being spoken because you come to expect to hear it. I still find myself tripping on my tongue and asking ATC to "please repeat." I remind myself that the controller who is speaking with me likely has many other aircraft he/she is juggling and recognize why their spoken word is brief and rapid. It can be a challenge for any pilot at times. Thanks for the comment!
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 4 года назад
I agree. They speak so quickly. It helps to know what to expect they are going to say before they say it and then it is easier to understand. Thanks for the comment.

Did you keep your approach high to avoid possible wake turbulence?
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 6 лет назад
Hi Glib. Yes, to stay above the approach of the adjacent jet to avoid their wake, but also to avoid the jet blast from the jet holding between the runways. If the holding jet gets cleared to enter the adjacent runway while an aircraft is on short final could be blown onto the taxiway or worse while passing behind them as they throttle up. Jets holding between the runways at John Wayne are quite common and aircraft on final will usually be warned to stay clear of their jet blast, but no every time. It is critical pilots landing on 20L recognize when jets are holding there and either stay high as you pass behind them or just go around.
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 4 года назад
Yes, as well as to avoid the jet blast from the aircraft holding between the runways. Tower routinely holds departing aircraft between the take off end of the runways 20L and 20R on taxiway Lima to facilitate timeliness. The jet parked between there is waiting for tower to clear them onto 20R which may be just as you are approaching the numbers for 20L which could result in you being blown over to taxi way Charlie or Alpha. Yikes! As a GA pilot you want to be aware of this common practice at KSNA. The Tower will often warn you of the jet blast danger of the waiting jet between the runways, but now always. Just keep an eye out for this possibility.
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 4 года назад
Yes, I have answered this before but somehow it doesn't show my response. Yes, I stay above the adjacent jet and land beyond where he lands to avoid wake. Thank you.

@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 6 лет назад
Hi Mr. Patriot. I am based out of John Wayne and all of my experience thus far has been centered around Southern California. It can get quite warm in SoCal and the surrounding areas. I am always concerned with Density Altitude when I fly into places like Big Bear and Palm Springs. Most of my flying in recent years has been in a Diamond DA40 and have quite a bit of experience with them. The plane is extremely forgiving in the air and quite stable in part due to the 39.5' wingspan. However, like all small aircraft, the DA40 is subject to turbulence. I keep my attention on the airspeed indicator to be sure it is in the green when I expect turbulence. Additionally, the DA40 handles exceptionally well in crosswind conditions. Overall, the aircraft is a joy to fly. I am partial to the stick over the yoke, as I feel the stick in my hand gives me a feeling of more positive control especially in situations of crosswind and gusty conditions.

hi Dr. cool instruction and music. Q: do you know if 96 oz kit is enough for ~ 80 ft long joint?
@rdgdds5359
@rdgdds5359 8 лет назад
Hi Atoof. Thank you for the kind comments. I'm not totally sure but I think your project would require two kits. My project was approximately 40 feet and I used most of the kit although my joint was wider than a standard pool joint due 10 years of settling which caused some separation of the pool and deck. Fabiola mentioned below that there is a material in a caulking gun tube which may be easier than mixing and using the kit, but the material may not be the same brand or quality. I like the idea of mixing part A and Part B as there is a chemical curing component instead of just air drying as may be the case with the caulking gun product. I need to do some research on that. Hope this helps!
