we have spruce grouse here but you can't hunt them. They are listed as threatened here in wisconsin. There's mostly ruffed but I haven't gotten any yet they usually fly off before I get in range. But going for them this year again. Often wear electronic ear muffs I can more pinpoint them during mating season when they are flapping.
Thanks! I've been really getting it dialed in the last couple years. Got two birds on my last trip and saw maybe 5 or 6 ruffies. I had a good moment realizing a couple other people had been in my honey hole and the birds were gone. So I decided if I was a bird I would go up the big steep hill into the really thick stuff to hide and have a better chance to run. I was right, got a couple right in there within a few minutes. Listening for those peeps and little quail like sounds they make, finding the food, finding the cover, hitting those closed roads early in the morning. Going to go find a new spot a little higher up maybe find some spruce grouse.
That was me the first 2 weeks of season here in Colorado.... Then i adjusted the barrel tension/headspace on my take down 10/22 and solved all my "moving bird" issues.
Awesome, just the video I need to get pumped up! Our opener is on the 15th. Unfortunately I have a company meeting that morning but I am literally showing up in my hunting clothes and getting out ASAP. Been checking my spots the past week. Seen about 4 or 5 but kind of far apart. However that was just from the seat of my motorcycle. I'm sure if I get off and walk the woods a bit I'll find more. So excited!
Good Catch! What do you use to transport them in the field and then to home? Are you dressing them in the field or taking them home intact? It was fun watching the pup running around.
Try air rifle for grouse will improve your odds of bagging some. Spring piston is nice and quiet so if you miss you have a better chance of a follow up shot a Springer of about 510- 550 fps is perfect
love the grouse content as a newbie to bird hunting I learn a lot from your videos. I hunt in Wisconsin which is good for ruffed grouse habitat. what gauge of shotgun do you use? 20 or 12g? or does it matter do you think?
I like too soak the meat in cream or butter milk over night then fry it with some celery and mixed frozen vegies and sprinkle of chicken bovril untill brown add a cup of cream and a half can of cream of chicken soup let it simmer 20 min or when you see the broth come too the top. serve with some potatoes or rice, it will blow your mind. thank you for the video.
