These two things are not connected whatsoever. The blood is clearly meant to embody the blood sacrificed in what they called the "Kampuchean Revolution" AKA the Cambodian Civil War, in this context. This is not to deny that Democratic Kampuchea committed genocidal savagery, but this is just a clear fallacy that one would find in pop historical narratives.
Kkmer rough regime was based on lies and propagandas. They won the war because of Sihanouk supporters. People joined them to fight to restore the king. People hate Khmer Rough. then and now.
