Looked like it, I was passing loch skerrow at that point where we saw the railway platform. The brown trout was rising all night, should’ve brought a fishing rod 😅
I checked with a friend who does voluntary work for the Cairngorm park authority including projects to help the greviously endangered Capercaillie population especially in Deeside. Apparently, there are a (very lonely!) individual birds in Glen Tanar and the Loch Kinord and Davan nature reserve, which include some area around Logie Coldstone. The Balmoral forests of Ballochbuie and Garmaddie are the best areas to encounter the birds, though keeping disturbance to a minimum, and strictly not during the spring breeding season. Some beautiful spots for a wild camp on the way up through Ballochbuie forest to the corrie lochs on the north side of Lochnagar. I meant to comment on that brilliant capture of a shrew making a meal of a beetle. Completely unconcerned by Callie and yourself looking on!😃
I used to think I could identify locations (having walked these hills since school days) around the Cairngorms mountain range, but you have me stumped. I guessed Loch Morlich or Loch an Eilean and rothiemurchas forest?? Whatever, a perfect camp spot in a sublime forest environment. Just don't sit on the ant hills!!., Callie, in perfect playful agreement.😃 I was out with a walking group yesterday at Logie Coldstone (east of the high Cairngorms), a magnificent forest walk, but passing out across rough pasture on the eastern hillside of Morvern, attentively escorted by Curlews and lapwings, and later a bit of drama as an oystercatcher mobbed a Red Kite. All of course protecting eggs/hatchlings at this time of year.
It really was a perfect camp spot Mike ! Rothiemurchas and the surrounding forests, there’s just something special about it. I was really hoping to see a capercaillie (I’ve never managed to see one) but there’s always next time. I do believe there’s some that live in the forests near Logie Coldstone (is that correct?) plenty of red kite as you mentioned 👍🏻 maybe that’s the next destination for a forest camp 😃
Well, you can't expect Callie to miss out on collecting sticks! fried sausages on offer in due course, great incentive😃 What a brilliant area of woodland and water to have on your doorstep to see and enjoy😊
Yeah it’s a lovely little place to spend some time in nature, Callie loves it wherever we are 😅 also nice at this time of year listening to the local bitterns booming in the Reed beds although I think I’ll need to invest in some better camera gear if I want to film those 😅
I have to say I have not had the pleasure of hearing Bittern booming in my extensive travels in Cumbria and Scotland. What locations would you advise? I do recall from schoolboy summer holidays staying with 'granny' in rural southern Ireland, the penetrating evening calls of the Corncraik.!! Past history now, I expect, with the loss of the traditional hay meadows, though I believe they are still found on Skye and the Outer Hebrides.
@@mikemccormac9368 Leighton moss in north Lancashire is a good spot for bitterns, pretty much a 90% chance of seeing/hearing a bittern this time of year since they’re doing so well! Unfortunately I’ll have to be very lucky to ever hear a corncraik these days. My grandie actually found one in the street that had hit a telephone wire a couple of years back and was unaware of how scarce they had become. He gave it away to friend, the guy probably made a fortune getting it stuffed and sold on 😅
Such images to stay in the memory! A typical West Coast downpour along to Barrisdale Bay. I bet you appreciated the bothy to dry out! It is so sad to record the bodies of beautiful seabirds in the water of the loch. Avian flu, perhaps, or starvation brought on by stormy winter weather😢 Callie being a daftie puppy in the snow.😃as you gain the views of snow-capped peaks. Inverie, I know only from a boat trip, long before the current community ownership and fine refreshments at the pub after a long hike😊😊.
Yeah such a beautiful part of Scotland indeed! Callie has always loved the snow😂 I was planning on getting a good meal from the pub but the chef was ill, ah well there’s always next time!

Spring is definitely in the air, though local to where I am in Banchory on Deeside, some hill goers have been hit with blizzards on the higher tops. Again your blend of sounds of water, rain and mist hanging in the trees is inspiring. Not to mention Callie of course, splashing through the well watered landscape!! And many years since I've seen a stoat in white winter coat.😀 Scratching my head for your location, the fells or border hills? But hope you haven't injured yourself to badly. You made light of the incident in the video, but trust you you will get that along to A&E on return home. Keep well!! Mike
Thanks again Mike, these are the hills on the a6 between Kendal and shap. Ideal really as it’s not in the heart of the lakes so you usually get the place to yourself. Did make a mess of my finger with the axe 😂 silly mistake but I didn’t let it spoil the evening👍🏻

What an engaging format, letting the sights and sounds of landscape, waterscape, wildlife and your four- legged companion provide the soundtrack. The shots of the sunset over the loch and hills were perfectly captured. I bet your bonny dug didn't expect to get a trip to the sea(loch)side, joyous stick chasing, sand-digging and swimming, it's a dogs life!! (Not sure if I missed it, what's his/her name?)
First "Like" I thought that was the river Orchy area , was surprised it was the Merrick. The loch and scenic mountain area geography was serenic , pity not a native tree ,never mind a forest was missing, an eco system raped to death & a degraded landscape indeed. The videography was excellent and you captured this adventures heart and thoroughly enjoyed viewing so thank you much for sharing this wonderful nature experience .
Thank you very much George! Yeah its a shame much of Scotland's hillsides are so barren and always find myself sitting in these areas picturing how they should be. However there is many groups and landowners looking to make a difference to our native ecosystems, so there is hope for the future!
@@RiverSide200 yeah as a Scot , I'm a shamed , I also share your visions how stunning and "alive" the landscape would be if covered by native woodland , apposed to the famous writer that my country...is a barren , empty wet desert ! Yes I follow trees for life .UK , the affric rewilding was giving £300,000 from EU rewild. Many landowners are queuing up on side to re-establish native woodland which is good news as guess they realise the profit in it, more attractive to tourists , hunters , better quality deer / fish etc excetera . Keep the vids coming your good at it & in time you get loads subs Inc me, reason I haven't subbed , just about to launch my own outdoor channel, choose my ch name , make couple vids etc , but this might delete my comments / subscriptions ?
