Being sci-fi, but with an almost 40k-esque spin in just how *byzantine* can the politics and the faction business be, I think Lancer becomes much more engaging for the group when you start building narratives from an actor-first perspective and then let your group react to them.
It's me! I'm the guy who knows what Fullbringers are! (Cal Kestis from the recent Star Wars Jedi games would also be a good reference for the power. So much of the story is him using Psychometry to see memories by touching objects. No idea if Calvin would get that reference either though).
I disagree with (skill + luck)/ time. It seems more like time(skill + luck). You can have skill or luck, but time devoted consistently is dominant. Do that thing you care about several days every week!
@WinWithDice Depends what you're after. I like Overlord, and would like to run a game where you're the undead villains defending your dungeon. Sailor Moon is obviously great and even better with the new archetype you covered to run a game. Dr Stone is magnificent. Fantastic inspiration for an Alchemist type character. It'd need a lot of good rolls to pull off though.
These are good picks and I have watch all of them!. It would be fun to make a mega dungeon with the overlord idea. I really like all lieutenants being a grab bag of monsters.
Great episode! Session zero is so important to make sure that everyone is on the same page. Playing other TTRPGs, specifically Monster of the Week (though other Powered by the Apocalypse games do it too), they make it so each player has to know another. Could be everyone knows one player and they get to be the lynchpin that holds the party together, or could be that the party is a group of acquaintances. It does create some fun party dynamics ( “No I don’t care if the Ambassador gets killed! I’m only here because Gus asked me for help!”…..”I showed up because Gus needed my help, but now *intense eye contact* I’m staying for you!”). Really helps everyone establish a good group dynamic and allows for some growth! Lots of cool things on the horizon! I’m very excited for Starfinder 2! Really want to explore that setting!
Thanks Mitchell! That's a good idea. I usually ask the players to come up with a reason why they are in the story. Usually link to an npc, area or alighted with the goal of the adventure in general. I am going add another pc to that list.
@@WinWithDice lol. Oh the high school years spent playing 3rd edition with different odd players: guy who made Alucard from Caslevenia (the character was bad, and his RP was worse), the guy who wanted to make a sadistic necromancer (but still have everyone warship him as a hero), the kill-crazy dwarf who just wanted to kill without consequence and numerous others who wanted to play as various anime characters (only to be crestfallen when they see how weak level one characters are). Usually these only lasted one session, and we kicked two of the players out of the group entirely. Knowing about episode zero would have saved us a lot of grief. I guess the takeaway is that the players should be on the same page and have an anchor to hold them together.
Man, you need to stream for longer! Was going to share this tidbit about Wanderhome, that new TTRPG I got. So here is the elevator pitch: no combat, and no GM (Well, GM agnostic they call it). So anyone at the table can move the story around and make NPCs. As per the theme: when you go on a road trip, one person can attempt to persuade everyone to go on a detour, but if no one wants to, then no one goes. It could also split the party, which means that the players who didn’t want to go can GM for the ones who did, and be the NPCs. Because there are no combat encounters, you don’t really need to worry about a TPK or player deaths. Also: Tokens. The game doesn’t use dice. If you do something that inconveniences you, or advances the plot, or describe the world in an interesting/immersive way, you get a Token. You can later spend a token to make a plan work, to gain the trust of an NPC, or nudge the story in a way you want. So yeah, that’s cool. Also got some play test material for the Arzium TTRPG. It’s pretty rules light, and feels like the game “Near and Far” (board game set in the same world). Neat thing about that one: D 10 system. You typically need a roll of 7+ to succeed a task, and you spend your stats to help you reach that target. So if I had 7 strength, and I was making an attack, I could spend 3 strength to get D :10+3. After, I would have 4 strength until I rested. Also a fun thing, each class in the game begins with a certain number of XP. You can spend XP to unlock abilities. So right at creation my Frogman Cook could spend 3 of his 5 XP to gain “flying” and now I have a fly speed. Still reading the rules but seems neat! Lastly, just learning more about the Stormlight Archives TTRPG. They have a “Plot Die” system where you roll a D :6 whenever you roll a D :20. If you roll a 1, you get +4 to the total check, but you get a negative story thread. If you roll a 6, then you get +2 to the total roll, and you get a positive story thread. So that seems neat. Another thing, your characters get stronger the closer they are to death. So you kinda want bad things to happen to your characters, as that is when you get to see them at their full potential! lol just wanted to share, it’s good to see the VOD!
XD Alan Wake 2 streams usually run long. Computer just couldn't handle it this time. It's cool how other games do narrative mechanics. I think the Sentinels Of The Multiverse RPG has a system where you unlock more abilities as you take more damage, so it's like that last desperate move in a superhero story. I need more time to play all these games though XD And to somehow get people together
I feel like assaults are the perfect class to introduce intelligent NPC pilots. They are one of the few NPCs that can naturally Barrage with their ranged and melee attack combo, they can skirmish>take cover>hide to become very tough enemies to return fire on without flanking, and they are threatening to pretty much every PC archetype. I've used them in the past to show players what their options are during combat in an organic way.
You guys are really calling plot points from my upcoming MSMC game! I have an adventure planned when it’s all bio-mechs and monsters (SSC biopunk cult) As members of MSMC, the players have 200 soldiers who are part of their platoon (While they will come and go, they will see their troops in the mess hall, rec centers/bar). One mission is planned to be “players are on planet leave, and get ambushed by a gang members from a previous mission. They must steal a car and race back to their drop ship. They must navigate through an urban zone. Skill checks such as “Get somewhere fast” or “Pilot” will help them get there faster. Hacking/Fix will allow them to create obstacles (by hacking traffic lights/exploiting road infrastructure etc) I think it would be fun. In my previous campaign, I did make a “goon squad”. They were police officers who were aligned with the enemy faction. While they had assault weapons, they only had police armor. They were “Grunted” and my player were ordered to attack them with prejudice (as they were traitors) lol I appreciate the shout out to Escaflowne, and they swordsman (Balgus, I think) who solo-fought mechs!
TANSTAAFL: While I can understand a lifelong artist having strong feelings about AI art, it's not the easy button people think it is. Sure you can easily churn out obvious/bad stuff in high volume, but to get anything good and/or specific you're still subject to the skill+luck/time equation, just in a different format. Like most tech, it's a lever not a magic wand. Give it a year and people are going to start to grok that...or we will be up to our asses in NHPs 😂
Lol I think your right to an extent. People should just dedicate time en effort into stuff and I totally understand if people cannot afford or do have the ability to create art, but like people can try. Its just effort and time, that's it take to get good. But if I am wrong praise our NHP overlords!!!
Mi amigo (Jaheira, Jaheira), su amigo Oh, Jaheira, when you die like that (Huh-uh; oh) You make a Calvin go mad (So bad; oh) So be wise (¡Sí!), and keep on (¡Sí!) Reading the signs of the combat No fightin'
Great podcast, guys! Very interesting book! lol always make up rules and monsters. It the only way to play! lol all these new races I’m sure is going to please anyone who loves to read fantasy smut 😝. I know many people who would derail adventures just to add Minotaur/mermaid romance arcs. The mermaid race would be fascinating if you did a full on underwater campaign. I wonder what fun encounters you could craft for that. Also seems like you guys want to both play a Monster Hunter campaign, and one where you are sentient woodland animals (seems the ROOT RPG and Wanderhome would be up your alley!). As a red seal chef I’ll happily contribute to the Pathfinder cookbook!
XD Hadn't thought of that angle for the new ancestries, but I do think an underwater campaign or oneshot could be cool. Could be interesting to play Pathfinder inspired characters in a different system. Especially in an ongoing setting. Also it would be fun if the Pathfinder cookbook had actual recipes too XD
@@licencetocalvin8658 The romance/smut novel genera has unsurprisingly spilled over into the TTRPG space. It’s interesting how many D&D inspired novels there are now! I dunno why, I just imagined merfolk fighting Chelish whalers. The Chelliax aqua hellknights eventually being summoned to stop the party! lol this is my subtle way of getting you to join me in my addiction of trying new TTRPG systems 😝. Of course it could be done in Pathfinder, but where’s the fun in that 😝!? D&D, Witcher and Game of Thrones all have their own official cookbooks, so Golarian should be represented too!
I’ve actually really fallen in love with this TTRPG. I’m getting ready to use it to run an Armored Core inspired game, and the setting has so many similarities to AC that it’s been effortless!
lol Delicious in Dungeon slaps! Definitely has a fresh take on the genera, and as a cook I appreciate the imagination of the food made! Damn! Sounds like you had fun at Origins! That must have been wild! lol. So if you cats like Dominion and Legendary, you should try CLANK! (Or CLANK! Catacombs, or CLANK in SPACE!). It’s a dungeon dash to loot as much treasure as possible and get out as fast as possible. The cards you buy to build your deck are also your actions (like movement and fighting monsters) it’s actually my wife’s favorite game! lol I’ve never thought about Saturday morning cartoons as inspiration, but I am now! Also, I got Blades in the Dark as a Father’s Day gift, so I’m tearing into that!
Ohhhh i will check Clank always down to add a new game to the collection. Need to get my wife group to play blades. I think they are the goofiest bunch of people. And they would have fun with system.
@@WinWithDice I was playing this time (Call sign “Boomsmith” a Macho-Man themed Monarch pilot), and my associate Chido was GMing. He’s been playing Interpoint Station for a few years now and can run Roll20 like it’s Foundry, he set up all the Macros. We enjoyed it, but we suffered from scheduling issues. So it took like, three months to complete. We all got to have our heroic moments (Boss Grolo was annihilated by a full charged Apocalypse Rail. every time I cleared heat, I made a point of describing how I used the vent steam as a fog machine, and shouted taunts to the enemies. My buddy, his mech was destroyed, so while co-piloting with Asuka, was able to make the final mad dash to get the transport to the finish line). Was all sorts of epic!
Love these episodes! They do give me lots of ideas! My claim to fame was using a Barricade and Spectre in tandem. The Barricade would carve up the map and force PCs to be isolated. My other claim to fame was my “highway chase” through the middle of a city. Two snipers were on the rooftops of a couple high rise buildings and added that sweet sweet tension. An epic moment where the Atlas pilot (who had the snipers mark) asked “Wait, can I jump through a window and break line of sight!?” And I of course said “yes!”. Cue the cinematic scene: the Atlas running down a freeway at 60 kmh and has the laser painted on them. The pilot looks to the left and sees his reflection on the building’s window. He stops running for a moment, feet digging into the pavement, and then acrobatic leaps through the window just as the ground evaporates from an anti-material round. They start running through an office, cubicles and patricians not even hindering the Atlas’s movement. After making it to the other side of the building, a swipe of the Terashima blade cleaving a hole in the wall, and then a leap out the other side. Several stories off the ground he dive’s before he begins to free fall. Kroil Rifle fires and Panzer Kunst allows the Atlas to parkour and leap up the top of the building to engage in melee with the sniper. lol it was a moment!
31:19 Ramon says he'd put an elite template on the Sentinel Solstice Rain has an elite Sentinel with the commander template defending a Veteran Rainmaker and that fight worked really well
