I live in the north-west coastal part of Norway (latitude: 62° 54' 42.84"). I love Japanese maples, and really want a maple garden. There are however some challenges. The summer season is short, the winter is long, and the wind can be draining.
Since moving to this property in 2017, I have tried to keep Japanese maples many places in the garden. Last spring I finally realized that the wind from north and west in spring and early summer was to hard for them when they were leafing out, and they dried out and died as a result. Therefore I moved all the remaining maples to the only area in the garden with natural shelter from these directions. It looks like I mostly have succeeded with sheltering them from the hardest wind, but I still must be better at protecting them from snow and ice during the winter.
Further I plan to add structures for softening the wind, defining space and framing the view in order to create shelter, dimension, and interest to the garden.

Hello to you to, I am happy to finally have some good maple news to share.😀 By the way, when I was planting the maples yesterday, I was removing all the soil above the roots, as I have learned that I should, because many of them are plantet to deep.. I discovered that Aurem had a quite thick strong branch of the root growing tightly around the trunk just above where the root starts. If I haven't taken the soil away, I wouldn't have notices. I had to use force to loosen it from the the trunk, and also be firm in order to avoid it from snapping back to its strangular hold on the trunk. I think this could have killed the tree if undiscovered . For me this is an important reminder to also check what's beneath the surface. Now I think that Aurem have every possibility to thrive. Oh yes, I really would like more trees from the Shirasawanum family, they are all gorgeous. i would always find space for any of them. ❤

@@mbeeme355 hi there. I understand your complains about the maples in this season with the leaves, it happened to me in some of them but in the treetops. Hello again, yes, I think that the reason for what is going is that there has not been any frost until last week, and that the color change needs frost to get started. It took about 3 -4 weeks all together, and there was no frost in this period. The temperatures were about between 10 and 5 celsius. As I tried to show in the video, all the other maples dropped the leaves even before Osakazuki came to its full glory. Also its nice how this tree keeps almost all its leaves while changing the colors. The best maple for autumn color in my collection. I have also published a video from were Osakazuki is nearly completely green. Its not that stunning when its all green, but its still a beautiful tree. Another nice thing with this tree is that it can tolerate some more wind than most of the other maples. And that makes it more robust all together.
