Not a lot of info on how the smaller pieces of wood are prepped and glued together. I imagine that’s the most important part.

The use of adhesives and plastic sheeting ensure there’s still lots of oil involved in the manufacture of CLT 🙃

As a mental exercise, it is interesting. But in the real world, with vandals, the elements and the weight, it isn't at all practical. Hell, they have enough trouble keeping ageing concrete structures from collapsing. And who would insure it?

Seems pointless making new software for increased us of timber when we can't even supply enough timber grown in Australia to suffice our market, so most of it's being imported from Europe !!!

I believe my AK-47 stock and handgaurds have something similar. Thin sheets of wood laminated together and, when shaped to its final form, leave beautiful different colored wood layers and is super strong and durable for battlefield wear and tear resistance.

I saw many buildings all over the world, in a structural analysis program's website, being made in CLT and I was actually curious how it is any different from the ones used in the past.

i have just tried to fill out one of these forms from HELL. For you with your training it is probably easy. But for myself with a year 10 education it is a nightmare. Did the person that designed it really think that the average Australian was going to be able to fill it out. Do not take this as a personal attack. But I am just that frustrated trying to do the right thing on a form that has about 32 different forms of vegetation to select from.

Well done chaps!! Chipping 3,000,000 cubic meters of our hardwood & LOOSE money to do that is THE most stupid waste of our wealth and resources. I lived in Tas for 4 years and every day massive logs from old growth virgin forests tore down the high way to the mills for wood chipping. Utterly insane. So glad to see CLT taking over. 25% of tiny Austria's industry is timber based, and they increase their forest cover every year. ie its brilliantly managed. Australia by contrast looses forest cover every year. It's a global deforestation hotspot thanks to decades of political corruption and ineptitude. Massive private and govt investment in CLT construction for domestic and export markets will pay huge dividends for generations.

I work in a CLT factory in Spokane, Washington. We primarily use spruce-pine-fir for our 12’x60’ panels. But, we just started making CLT out of %100 Doug fir or southern yellow pine. Although I’ve always wondered what CLT would be like made out of hardwood

I'm a student of architecture and your channel is really beneficial to me! If possible, can you write down the timeline? For the longer videos especially, like in which minute the speaker talks about which topic. I believe more people can benefit from your knowledge this way, people do not have so much time nowadays. Thanks a lot! edit: Oh I just saw that you have already done that in some of your videos

Hi Philip, very good explaination. If a house was built using DTS Method (Deemed to Satisfy) and it was later found out that the insulation material used in Ceiling (R4.0) and Wall (R2.5) were found to be faulty material (R value is 35% of its expected rating). The wall insulation is not R2.5 but only R1.75, singles glaze windows, black roof, west facing and other building material that was designed as DTS only (deemed to satisy). Does overlaying the existing R2.8 Ceiling Insulation with correct R4.0 will be enough to make the house to change from DTS to 6 Star?

Isn't CLT construction more expensive than regular wood construction?
@tokiomitohsaka7770
@tokiomitohsaka7770 Год назад
That depends on your location and availability of supply. One of the big advantages of mass timber is that the material is much lighter than concrete and steel, so your foundations can be designed for a lower load, which makes it cheaper. The workforce needed for the construction is also smaller, and you need less trucks to bring the materials to the construction site. The lighter materials also mean you can use smaller cranes. The material itself is more expensive, especially in places like the US, but the other offsets can make the project still cheaper depending on many factors.
@Aphorism89
@Aphorism89 Год назад
Not really. What matters is the labor. Paying carpenters to build up a full house frame will cost a LOT, plus you need to buy and get several products delivered, which also have a big CO2 footprint. Getting walls prefabricated, mostly by CNT cuts, then delivered and basically instantly assembled together is far more economical and have a far lower CO2 footprint.

Could you expand on bracing requirements for sub-floor framing, for example a typical freestanding deck. There's some ambiguity on whether this is actually required, would have suspected that this be more applicable to floors built on a slope, or erect >1.8m from the ground.

Very informative! How will the star rating take into account air tightness of the structure? Does the current software factor in air leakage rates of the the structure. I would assume this would make a large difference to energy use. The tighter the home the less energy is waisted conditioning the air again.
