The mod itself (Moviebattles II) has been around for like two decades. They're currrently holding some open beta weekends to thoroughly test a major new patch. Not a reboot or a disaster pre se, simply big overhauls that require extensive testing. Hopefully the devs will get behind fixing some of the many bugs and unwanted changes.
Yep! The MBII community has been going strong pretty much since the launch of Jedi academy. There are usually weekly fun events and competitive scrims, though activity waxes and wanes, it never stops completely.
Don't need to be complicated. I just use Q and E for the class specials, bind push/pull to mwheel, +use and change saber style on the side mouse buttons. Don't let bindings prevent you from trying this great mod!
Sounds crazy, but when I see videos of this I love closing my eyes and just listening. The force jump sound, the steps, the announcer, the chat sound. Takes me right back! Nostalgia 😍
Makashi is light style - there 1 hand is used lightstyle is a mix of shii-choo/makashi/soresu medium style is a mix of juyo/ataru/niman heavy style is just shien
You can't tie the lightsaber forms to styles in MBII. It's not designed for it. Lightsaber forms embody a certain philosophy, in the case of makashi mainly the conservation of energy (BP in MBII) and using parries to simulate the fencing aspect, which helps to slowly build an ACM advantage over time - done mostly from mid-range with yellow, but with cyan you can and should stay closer since it has t-rex arm reach. Makashi users attempt to control the duel and work with precise and calculated moves (as opposed to the hectic flailing aggression like with form IV). The mindset is stoic and patient, aiming for elegance primarily via 'fencing' the opponent down from mid-range which, if done properly, often results in ACM victories - though this style of combat is weak to Djem-so facehugging aggression, like how Anakin bulldozed Dooku in EP3 - though this weakness can be covered somewhat in MBII by well-timed counters, sometimes even full counter-combos. Red and purple cannot possibly be called Form V since they're handicapped mongoloid styles: without a way to initiate fast such as nudge, they can only be deployed against those who are significantly worse than yourself. Red/Purple does not work on someone that knows what they're doing (parry spam is gg every-time, just avoid being slapped by crouching and keeping distance. You will have a 100 percent winrate vs red in current patch. It's a trash design that only a noob would consider playable in even duels). Shien, afaik, refers specifically to the part of Form V associated with deflecting blaster-bolts back at the enemy, not the lightsaber combat portion, which in my mind, is Djem-So. Juyo is not a real lightsaber form. Nothing distinguishes it from Niman mastery apart from being a special snowflake invention to make Mace Windu cooler. All of its aspects can be found in those who master Niman, which is a jack of all trades and so, again, can and should not be limited to any one style in MBII. In fact, part of Niman mastery is using multiple styles and lightsaber forms to adapt to the situation, for example, countering blue with cyan or cyan with yellow or 4 hit parrying the hell out of someone who thinks they can win with red style. Ataru functions in bursts of aggression attempting to overwhelm the opponent. They use jump-attacks (Hawkbat swoop etc) and use movement with attacks to open angles(shift PB zones), and they use more acrobatics than other forms for this purpose also. Finally, Ataru favours dodging as a form of defense rather than perfect blocking, so you have your shadowswings and micrododges, crouch-dodges under upper-diagonals and backflips over uppercuts etc. Ataru duels come in starts and stops, bursts of activity. They're not concerned with preserving their own BP as much as they are concerned with ending the duel as swiftly as possible by draining the BP of the opponent. This often results in a furious burst of activity like two cats fighting, followed by a period of calm to regen BP before going at it again. It's called the aggression form for this reason. Basically, imagine ataru users running circles around the opponent, jumping and spinning, using force speed attacks and acrobatic-tricks such as backflipping, switching to red, cartwheeling back in for an insta etc. There's no long, drawn out duels, just quick bursts. Ataru is often mixed with other styles for more balance, because playing full on ataru is difficult against skilled opponents that can outlast you with proper defensive manoeuvres.
Combo timing when you hit someone is different from when you're just swinging in the air. You need to tighten the timing, but it still adheres to the same principle. If you do a 2,2 you need to start the second part with a halfswing timing, so to get this, you can try to just hold D and mouse1 and circle around the target dummy hitting it. Then try not holding mouse1 but clicking at the end of the swing when it bounces back. Then after you can do that, try to tap D+M1 (always movement first) at the end of the swing bouncing back. Depending on server fps and ping, there's a slightly different time to hold it, so in the beginning you don't need to be super tight with the taps, just hold D then m1 again right before the swing has finished bouncing back to neutral. You should also try to end your first combo on a right-side swing, since they restart faster due to the halfswing timing. For example, WA+D, D+WA where linking the two D-side swings is the important part, along with minding the gap. So right after you've done D, you pause for a moment as the swing "bounces back" in the anim, and right before it returns fully to neutral, you resume holding D and move into the second combo. The flow comes with practice, but when you find the timing from the halfswing tapping exercise above, you should be able to quickly get a hang of this. You can also try WA+SA, SA+WA just to see how much slower (and thus worse) ending on a left side halfswing is for combining combos. Hope it helps.
