We had enough of congested city living, the long office hours and endless traffic on repeat each day and decided to make a change. Follow along as we shape the next chapter of our lives, turning a neglected, overgrazed 20 acres of land in country Victoria, Australia into our home. Working towards a healthier, happier more self reliant lifestyle by learning how to grow and raise our own food, building our own home incorporating passive house concepts where possible and ultimately creating a productive, sustainable farm by applying our version of permaculture and regenerative agriculture.
Looks good, heads up on the screw bolts , put a 1/2 inch adapter on your impact gun and screw them in with the impact gun, much easier on your wrist and get a tighter fit and heaps quicker.
I'm so happy for you. I have been watching for many months now. You guys have done a great job so far. I stumbled across your Chanel looking for someone building a steel kit barn as hubby and I are building one too. Only to find out you guys are building a PAAL kit home too. Mine is arriving in September. The Stanthorpe🙂 I keenly await to watch your progress. Thanks for posting
Thanks for following along! It's a lot of fun, can be frustrating but enjoy the process! Feel free to reach out if you need advice. When you get your first PAAL delivery, try and spread everything out and check it all against the manifest. Cheers!
hi- just wondering, Is this an expensive thing to do[ concert slab insulation] ? Before I approch our builder, I'm trying to figure out a reasonable estimate for doing this to our a single-story home in Melbourne's south-east [22sqm- new build] . thank you for your time
Hi there, It's not to expensive as an OB, if you're going through a building they'll ad their mark up. Pricewise Insulation is a good resource to get prices of Slabmate, I used 100mm but it's available in various sizes.
Congratulations it’s a huge step in the process. I’m owner building also, I’ve had mine cured and sealed for 3 months and now waiting for it to stop raining on the east coast everything is ready to go. What size is the slab thanks
Looking forward to following along I’m one step ahead atm I have my slab poured and septic is finished just waiting for the rain to stop so we can start the framing. I’m doing a shed/home northern NSW
How many litres is the main tank you probably said already, I’m in the middle of doing almost the same thing my main tanks are 3 tanks of 27000 and the forth tank is a fire tank and 30000 we are on the mid north coast NSW and I have to have 30000 litres just for fire
Hi mate, i need some advice if possible? when you install the door and the corrugated sheets sit behind the door frame. how do you stop the rain from hitting the sheet and going behind the door?
You need to do a cut on each side at the top, the top flange of the door frame then goes under the sheet over the door. I'll get a pic today and post if you like, it's probably easier to show it.
We went with Metkit which is Paal home's budget line. Couldn't be happier with how it turned out. Just follow the instructions exactly and read the manual 10 times over before you start anything to make sure you got it all figured out in your mind. Goodluck 👍
Great update, thank you. Did you get affected by the fires at all? Just a small suggestion, put your microphone on your hat or a bit further away from your mouth so we don't hear all the heavy breathing 😊
Thanks for the tip😊 . The fires came close, thankfully we were not in danger this time. We have a great CFA and they did an amazing job! Hope you are enjoying following along!
Very minor point about terminology 8' x 4' will confuse Americans, I grew up with 4' x 8' sheets of drywall, plywood, rigid foam insulation, etc. - I don't ever remember anyone calling those 8' x 4' , that would just confuse everyone, really. thanks.
If you do this again, if you set a few height pads dotted around at the exact height you need (on the perimeters). Then you can use a timber to screed between the points. The process is just like concreting or putting in a sand bed for pavers. You end up with it perfect between those points. When screeding you pull the timber backwards and it pulls the excess material back with the timber. Good luck and thanks for the vid
Love your videos. They bring back memories. In WA, Electricians and Plumbers certify their own work. We can't do our own work like they do in USA. I did the trenching, ran the cable and the tell tale leaving the ends of the trench open. I just looked at my gable ends and I have an angle sitting over the ends of the roof purlins that is level with the girts on the wall. The wall fastens to this at the top. Just a warning; if you lay out your own leach drains, the earth mat will bio degrade in the sun so leave that to last.
I did something on a previous shed I had, just used L section, slipped it up behind the sheet on the outside and put a tek in about every 600 along the outside (Sika on the part against the slab. It worked well.
The wet season (Winter) here, the ground under the crust is like quick sand if you break through it. I'm thinking of running some agi pipe along the high side of the house to redirect water...
I assembled the trusses, hinged them to the footings and raised them by hand using props of different lengths. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IzmCBj2ucVk.html
@@20acrestohome My 2 bedroom cottage was $50,000 with free delivery because we didn't have an agent and dealt directly with Sydney. Bunnings, Bunbury supplied the materials, span truss in Perth, the wall frames and trusses and Jason, the windows. I built on stumps and they supplied a floor kit and lockup kit. They warned me at the end of the year that the prices were going up so I bought a container and got the fitout and finishing kits. I replaced the supplied hotplate and oven with Westinghouse and got money back with the variation. I got my brother to sign off the engineering on my stumps and had them made locally. They calculated the insulation levels according to NSW regs and I added under floor insulation.
I'm in WA. The farmer who subdivided my land had to put in a pole, transformer and green dome. It cost him $16,000. The meter box has to be close to the dome. I have a two way switch in the distributor pole so I can plug in a 15 amp generator.
What rules do you have there for an owner builder? In WA, we have a points system based on our skills. That soil test would not go more than 500mm in my soil.
Hi, in Vic it's basically a white card, then an owner builder course via the Victorian Building Authority (VBA). Then getting approval from the VBA to become an OB.
what type of ladder is that you're using and specs. I'm building same barn in about 6 months and I'm taking your lead big fella. I may have a bunch Qs in coming months. I love what you're doing. you are pretty much the only Aussie that I can find giving a tuition on a metal shed put together. Well done.
Cheers! The platform ladder is a Gorilla brand, I got it from Sydney Tools, Total Tools also have them but were out of stock. The platform adjusts from 1.5 - 2.4m, it's rated to 180kg. I also have an extension ladder that gets me a bit higher but not as easy to work off. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos, like I've said in my videos, I'm not an expert, just a bloke giving it a crack. Happy to answer questions, I may take a few days to get back to you because I'm doing long days on the build. Enjoy the process!
I wonder how the Kingspan will perform in terms of noise from the rain. This is why I am considering anticon 80 so it can cushion the noise as well as a thermal break. I am also considering putting kingspan down first, then anticon over the top to further bolster the efficiencies. What do you reckon ?
These videos are a few weeks behind so the roof has been finished for a while, we've had some heavy rain and hotter days (around 34c) I'm so impressed with the sound and temp inside. I couldn't recommend it highly enough. It's really pleasant, the mornings can be a bit warmer because the roller door faces east. Have you thought about putting Foilboard between the roof battens for an extra layer? I'm not sure how the Anticon would go laying on the Kingspan as you should have an air gap over the Kingspan.
How are you finding the prices these days mate ? Everything has become dear as poison, especially concrete. I just finished spending 50k just for concrete work here for my shed slab and a driveway section. I could've built two sheds ten years ago same size as the one now for 50K or less. What a world we live in hey ? I want to go back to the 80s.
The prices are horrendous! We started planning the shed and house build a few years ago, well before Covid, and that budget has been blown out of the water! We just make adjustments and shop around as much as possible for the best prices. Cheers
Hey mate, enjoying these videos. Can I ask, when you're trimming the tops of the front and back gable ends, are you cutting the end wall sheets flush with the purlin or do you have to be a bit higher ?
Great work so far mate. What was the thickness of the aluminium vermin proof ? I like the double sided tape hack too. Very good idea, especially when you're doing it yourself too. Glad to see that you're also insulating. Not many people bother and later come to regret it when it becomes a hot sweat box. I'm planning to do the walls and roof. Thinking about going double on the roof with Bradford style Anticon. I'm thinking to go across first then side to side down the gables. How much was the kingspan insulation ? I was curious to see how you terminated it at the top. I'm guessing in the coming video when you do the roof, you'll probably overlap the roof insulation into the wall insulation ? The gap at the bottom is also a very good idea to stop wicking up of moisture etc. I'm dreading my build because there is so much fiddling around and sometimes I wish we had 5 arms, preferably two of them being extendable to lol...
The aluminium was 1.6mm, I can't post the drawing I did for it but the measurements are 40mm (the part nails to the slab) x 21mm drop x 17mm. The 17mm was a mistake, if i was doing it again I'd make it 25mm. The double sided tape was from Bunnings and specifically for insulation, the brand is Ametalin, $41 for a 50m roll. I got the Kingspan with the shed from Best Sheds, about $2000 from memory but I found Pricewise Insulation have awesome prices, that's who I got all my insulation for the house from. Hopefully the latest video explains how I terminate at the top, let me know if it doesn't. Don't dread it! It's good fun, strongly suggest getting about 6 quick release clamps (as those extra hands).
Hey mate, great effort. Looks like you're on your own there. You're a brave man working off a platform ladder that high up. I'm about to start construction of my own steel shed which is 4.5m to the peak, not American Barn Style, just a normal gable ended roof shed 15m x 9m x 3.6m I purchased a scaffold and a scissor lift pretty cheap to help me get the job done. I have no help, so I have to persevere and do it myself. This is humanity in the modern times... Wish me luck.
A scissor lift is a great idea for the centre peak, I was also looking at mobile scaff and will probably get one for the house build. The platform ladder is probably one of the best purchases I've made, so much better than the extension ladder I was using. It can be daunting when you're looking at the shed all flat packed, you'll be fine, just take you time, eat the elephant one bite at a time!
Thanks for the review. Been thinking of getting one of these. I have 1,300 square feet of grass to cut. Will one battery last that much time? Thanks again.
Thanks Joe! We were doing just under 900 square meters (9687 square feet) and would mow that 1.5 times on one charge. For 1,300 square feet you could get away with a much smaller electric mower. But I'd highly recommend Ego mowers
