Hello. My channel will be primarily dedicated to woodworking and wood turning with an emphasis on Colonial period furniture. I will also throw in some bonsai, tool and sharpening stone videos . I just retired after thirty six years in Insurance Claims Management and I am looking forward to my shop time.
Most of the time(not always)The slate back(not BBW)Is not indicative of a manufactured stone. It’s just a Coticule that has been glued to regular slate. The top layer is almost always a layer of natural coticule. It’s just easier to mine cut and set the stone.
Do you remember what model # sjoberg you have? I inherited the exact same one with the square dog holes and I’m having trouble finding any information on it. Thanks!
I don’t see a model number or anything like that. I bought this at a close out at Woodcraft when the square holes were being phased out and the round dog holes were starting. It was in 2006. I would never change for a round hole if given a choice.
Steve, Many thanks for these fabulous videos. Like yourself, I have a love for these Reversible Oilstone Boxes....but I have had a recurring problem with two of the Medium India stones and I wonder if you have experienced anything similar. Both of the stones are completely porous...no matter how much mineral oil I put on them it soaks straight through and out the bottom. One is a used 1960s Bear Norton in an oak box and the other is a replica of the one in your video, unused, in a maple box. It is highly unusual, as I have many full size india stones and have never encountered this issue before now.
Hi Tim. I have experienced the same thing with the India stones. If it is too bad I soak the stone in a thick oil for a few hours- such as mineral oil or even 90 weight gear oil. After that I use my usual lubricant - kerosene. Then I later repeat when the stone become thirsty again. Good luck.
@PeriodWoodworker Many thanks for getting back to me, Steve, and for your advice. I will try soaking them in various oils as you suggest. These stones must have slipped through Norton's quality control, somehow. On the other hand, the Soft Arkansas stones in these boxes are surprisingly good and much better than any other Soft Arks I have used....nearly as good as their top grade Washitas. Anyhow, thanks again for your advice. All the best. Tim
I would also agree with that. There are some of the best soft Arkansas stone in these reversible kits. Soft Arks. Seem to get a bad rap but if you get a good one they are very useful stones. Take care, Steve Hatcher
Hi buddy, Stumbled onto your video after purchasing a Green Mountain Boxwood (incidentally, also in a 3 gallon pot) I’m going to bonsai. Thank you for posting it, you and your video answered several questions I had regarding the effort to bonsai a Green Mountain Boxwood, back budding , pruning and repotting. Please give us an update when you can! I saw a lot of your plants in the background, and think you should tell us more about your collection! No one who isn’t a serious bonsai enthusiast would have as much a variety of potting medium as you, so share your wisdom! Make more of these bonsai videos!! I’ve subscribed in anticipation.😊 Much obliged, Greg
A friend asked me if I wanted some holly for firewood. I said "I'll be right over" Got a bunch I cut myself and sealed the end grains. Now I can take my time making blanks. I usually dry the item in its own sawdust in a cardboard box for about 12 months. Any suggestions for me to store the better? Thanks.
Holly notoriously gets blue stain if not dried quickly. I don’t know if being in its own sawdust would increase that. I recently got some 10” logs for turning. I split the logs to avoid cracks and then I sealed the ends and stored with spacers so it would dry. I did not get too much stain. Good luck
White hard translucent are the easiest because of the glass like appearance coupled with light translucence. Genuine black hard are very hard to determine without some writing to prove them. There are a lot of folks that try to sell “black” hard but they are not. They do have a type of glass like with faint translucence. Washita are the easiest when they are older and have been used. They become very mottled in appearance. Good luck.
Hello, I hope i am not bothering you. I seen the nice collection of Vintage Norton stones you have, you should be proud! Unfortunately i just ruined a Nice Behr manning fine India ( i wont get into that) the stone wasn't high but i live in USA and bought from England and shipping was through the roof. I love the vintage Behr manning Troy NY fine Indias from the 30'- 40's , my favorite to use on knives. The best one are the tannish Orange They are harder and the grit in them are finer. Man this stone i ruined was one of those, a fine 8x2x1 it had a crack in it, it looked like it was fired/vertrifed too long and happened when it was made. Anyways these are one of my favorite stone I bet you wouldn't know were i could find a NOS or close to it? Most of the time i call those that have just enough black metal on them that indicates they were only used about a dozen times. Not asking for your contact info, i would be glad to leave mine if you would reply back. Best, Mike
check your wastegate vacuum hose. I had that and the hose was perished at the wastegate so I trimmed an inch off and it cleared the problem. If it's not the hose it is probably the pressure transducer valve (A0001531700 on my 2012 Sprinter)

Thanks for watching. I have sold most of the Eschers and I should soon sell a lot of the rest of the collection. I will hold your message and let you know when. Thanks Steve. eBay ID is stevhat
I suppose it would but it depends on the thickness of the cutting board. Get your contrasting wood am do your calculations. Be sure to leave about 15% for both as waste. Good luck.
@@mrshoe9 Do they all need this done even with a brand new part? I have a 2009 sprinter with error code P0101. If I put a brand new MAF sensor on it does it still need to be programed to the van or can I just pop it on and go. Some people have said pop on and go and some say it needs programming 🤯 are there any other things that P0101 code can be as I can't afford to throw money at it if it might be something else cheaper Lol
@@darreneverard873 air mass on your year sprinter(diesel models) will need to have the values reset. Most decent diag machines will do it. So doesn't need to go to the dealer. P0101 is a common air mass meter fault code. If the wiring checks out ok change the sensor.👍
@@mrshoe9 Thanks for the advice👍 It's all sorted now thank God and a really helpful local merc guy👌 You were right it did need to be put on a machine and programmed to the van. Not a hard fix with the right diagnostic / programming tools but looking for answers on the internet well that was a different matter 🤯 😅
I saw all your videos on the stones, you really have some spectacular pieces, my compliments. I'll leave you my contact. In case you want to sell something, please contact me, thanks tirimax90@gmail.com
